YMCA Swim Lessons
Mom, Pop, & Me: This class is for parents and their children 6 months to 18 months of
age. This class is designed for the parent and child to participate and learn together,
while having fun and learning basic water adjustment and aquatic skills.
Pike with Parent: This class is for parents and their children 18 months to 3 years of
age. Pike with Parent builds on the skills introduced in Mom, Pop & Me, with participants improving these skills an learning more advanced skills and independence in the
water
Preschool Lessons:
Pikes: this class is designed to be the child’s first experience in the water without a
parent in the class with him or her. Water safety skills, water adjustment, independence
in the water, and basic stroke development are taught through games and activities.
Eels: Participants build on the skills they learned in Pike and continue to become more
in-dependent swimmers. Safety skills and knowledge are expanded and reinforced during this level. Swimmers will work to gain confidence without an instructional floatation
(float belt).
Rays: This class will review the skills learned in the Pike and Eels levels, while continuing
to improve on stroke skills, body positioning, and independence in the water. Swimmers
work on building endurance, learn basic diving skills, and swimming independently of an
instruction flotation (float belt).
Starfish: This class continues to build on the skills learned in the previous pre-school
levels. Breaststroke kick, front crawl, and breathing techniques are introduced and
practiced.
Grade School Lessons:
Polliwogs: This class will focus on confidence, floating, flutter kicking, forward motion,
arm rotation, and breathing.
Guppies: This class is for swimmers who are comfortable in the water and can swim independently for 15 feet or more. This class teaches freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke,
and elementary backstroke.
Minnows: Swimmers will continue to develop their freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke,
and elementary stroke, while learning the sidestroke, and begin to refine diving skills.
