COURSE DESCRIPTION
The past decade has witnessed major advances in Alzheimer disease and related disorders.
The molecular profiles of many neurodegenerative disorders can be reliably identified in
the cerebrospinal fluid. A rich array of MRI and PET tools enable visualization of cognitive networks, as well as metabolic, functional, and molecular changes. Genome wide
association studies have uncovered new mutations and genetic risk factors for Alzheimer
disease, frontotemporal dementia, and Lewy body diseases, which will hopefully point to
new pathways and therapeutic targets. Vascular risk factors are said to increase the risk
of Alzheimer disease (as well as stroke), but the etiologic pathways remain controversial.
Meanwhile, we are faced with huge challenges in providing person-centered care as baby
boomers arrive at the age of risk in the era of the Affordable Care Act.
This course provides a didactic, evidence-based, review of the differential diagnosis and
treatment of the most common forms of dementia (e.g., Alzheimer disease, vascular
cognitive impairment, dementia with Lewy bodies, and fronto-temporal dementia). The
morning session focuses on dementia practice, while the afternoon session tackles exciting
translational research topics (e.g., genetics, metabolic risk factors, and clinical trials). It is
structured to be interactive, and includes audience response questions, case presentations,
and question and answer sessions.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
•
Distinguish memory impairment due to compromise of the medial
temporaldiencephalic memory system from frontal executive system.
•
Describe clinical circumstances where CSF examination, FDG PET, or amyloid
PET scan may be indicated.
•
Counsel patients and families on evidence-based symptomatic treatments.
•
Outline which genetic tests to order for familial AD and FTD.
•
Prescribe medications and life-style changes to reduce vascular risk.
•
Demonstrate how to refer interested persons for a clinical trial.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for neurologists, geriatricians, primary care providers, nurses
and other health care professionals seeking to learn updates on Alzheimer disease.
