Poirier 1 President’s Report 2014 was an impressive year of growth and acclaim for the Kelowna Art Gallery. From varied and outstanding exhibitions, engaging events, Board and staff professional development, and wise fiscal management, Kelowna Art Gallery is truly a flourishing institution. First, I want to give thanks and honour the dedication of the Gallery’s staff members. Working together, the staff team organized and created memorable shows and events, and put on informative and educational public programming for all ages. It is because of their efforts that the Gallery is seeing record attendance, reaching new audiences, and continuing to secure new financial support. Due to the introduction of new provincial anti-bullying laws, the staff team participated in healthy workplace workshops and co-created a respectful workplace policy that is a model amongst all nonprofit institutions. I’d like to commend our Executive Director, Nataley Nagy, for her vision and tenacity. The Board of Directors also deserves acknowledgement and thanks for their time and wisdom in furthering the mission of the Kelowna Art Gallery. This year we introduced a strategic planning model, in which thirty minutes of each Board meeting is dedicated to professional development and education on such topics as fund development, Board governance, and art awareness. We were also active participants in a cultural services forum put on by the City of Kelowna’s Cultural Services Department, the second such forum bringing together Board members of our region’s artistic institutions to foster collaboration and strategic partnerships. In 2014, we bid adieu to two long-serving Board members – local artist and professor emeritus Mary Smith McCulloch, and lawyer Laura Myles – and were pleased to welcome new members Dylana Bloor and Joanna Wrzesniewski. Special thanks to our Treasurer, Derek Sanders, for his prudent oversight of the Gallery’s finances. Working with Nataley, Derek helped ensure that a potential deficit year actually ended up with another modest surplus. We take pride in carefully utilizing the public and private funds that are entrusted to the Gallery. Board members and volunteers worked feverishly to put on a second Appetite for Art event – bringing together visual art with delicious local food and beverages – and attendees acclaimed the evening as one of the most fun signature events in the Valley. Be sure to get your tickets early for the 2015 Appetite for Art! Our Gallery Opening parties and exhibition openings also attracted record crowds of diverse people, demonstrating the KAG’s relevance to numerous audiences. Please take a moment to review the reports and information within this 2014 Annual Report to learn more about the exciting happenings of your Kelowna Art Gallery. We look forward to seeing you at the Gallery in 2015! Respectfully submitted, Marla O’Brien President 2 Executive Director’s Report Since its founding in 1976, the Kelowna Art Gallery has been building a reputation as a nationally significant venue for exhibitions, scholarship, and educational programs. We showcase important visual art with the belief that art and creativity are the birthright of every individual, cornerstones of a healthy society, and catalysts for social and economic vitality. The Kelowna Art Gallery is a place where members, visitors, and students of all ages come to be inspired, learn, create, debate, and be challenged. Ensuring these outcomes places a huge responsibility on the Gallery, its Board of Directors and its staff, to constantly identify and develop fresh exhibitions and programs that engage the varied audiences that we serve. The public face of the Gallery is only one part of who we are. Behind the scenes, we work as team to improve operations, make use of new tools, and form new partnerships in the community, all with the goal of effectively, memorably, and meaningfully serving the public. The past year has been one of many accomplishments, operationally and artistically. This Annual Report summarizes the excellent work and accomplishments of undertaken in the last twelve months. Eight unique exhibitions and accompanying publications (both print and digital) were overseen by Curator, Liz Wylie, with the assistance of our Registrar, Clea Haugo, preparator Mike O’Doherty, and freelance installation assistant, Maureen Lisle. We were pleased to commission artist Lynden Beesley to create our second Artist’s Garden Project, Hortus Conclusus, in the Rotary Courtyard Space and we were delighted to commission two local artists, Crystal Pryzbille and Johann Wessels, to produce new work for our satellite location at the Kelowna International Airport. The Acquisitions Committee of the Board of Directors added twenty-nine works of art to the Gallery’s permanent collection with thanks to artists Christos Dikeakos, John Hartman, and Ann Kipling, and with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. The Gallery’s ambitious education and public programming department led, by Renee Burgess and Brenda Feist, and assisted by other professional staff and volunteers, presented five communitybased exhibitions in the Front Project Space. We focused our educational activities on partnering collaboratively with other community organizations to ensure that our activities were accessible and of real benefit to the community and that a diverse array of scholastic programs and life-long learning opportunities were available to citizens of all ages. Marketing and Events Coordinator, Joshua Desnoyers, has dramatically increased the Gallery’s public profile in regional, and national media and has used social media in innovative ways. Joshua has also capably delivered amazing events such as all of our Gallery opening receptions, GO Parties and our signature, Appetite for Art gala. In addition, he has coordinated a significant number of rental events for both community-based and corporate organizations, which provide important earned revenues for the Gallery. Kyle L. Poirier, KAG’s Graphic Designer, produced seven high-quality catalogues and two online publications. In addition, Kyle designed all of the Gallery’s promotional and marketing materials. Kyle continues to advance our IT capacities by continuing to update our website and increasing digital access to the Gallery’s resources. We are delighted to welcome Hanss Lujan as Membership Coordinator and Gallery Assistant in 2014. Hanss has been the friendly face welcoming you at many events and openings and we are delighted he has joined our team. 3 Executive Director’s Report Thanks to our Gallery Assistants and Family Sunday Assistants for their commitment to offering excellent hospitality to 16,000 visitors over the last year. Gallery volunteers number over 100 dedicated individuals and we are grateful for their invaluable assistance with Gallery openings, GO parties, and special events. We are happy to have a welltrained crew of docents who assist with delivering the Gallery’s tours and studio activities to the students of School District #23. I am pleased to report that auditors KPMG presented 2014 financial statements and a year-end audit that met all the requirements required for a non-profit corporation in BC. I am delighted to report that the Kelowna Art Gallery is, again, in a solid financial position. As always, I would like to thank each member of the Board of Directors who has dedicated his or her time, resources, and expertise to govern this very special organization. I am indebted to each one individually for the professionalism and kindness he or she have extended to me and to all who work and volunteer at the Gallery. Finally, we are deeply indebted to all our donors, members and sponsors for their continued support. We gratefully acknowledge the ongoing financial assistance of the City of Kelowna, the Province of British Columbia, The British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, Central Okanagan School District #23, the Central Okanagan Foundation, the Regional District of Central Okanagan, the Audain Foundation, the Canadian Museums Association, and Young Canada Works. Respectfully submitted, Nataley Nagy Executive Director 4 Curator’s Report In the 2014 year the curatorial area of the gallery was pleased to present a varied array of eleven exhibitions. Our commitment is to generate provocative exhibition programming for the community and our visitors, and to foster collaborations with other galleries, as well as bring important touring exhibitions to Kelowna. All this is in keeping with our mandate to support and promote the work of contemporary Canadian artists. Our curatorial aim is to provide a changing slate of exhibitions that reflects the wide variety of approaches to artistic practice and art making in Canada. From our small solo shows in the Mardell G. Reynolds Gallery to the large exhibitions in our climatecontrolled space, the Treadgold/Bullock Gallery, we set out to showcase a wide variety of work by all sorts of intriguing artists. We continue to select two local artists annually who are commissioned to produce new work for solo installations on our forty-foot-long wall at the departures area of the Kelowna International Airport. List of Publications 2014 Seven exhibition catalogues were published by the Kelowna Art Gallery in 2014. Marketing and distribution of our catalogues is handled by ABC Art Books of Montreal, but they are also available for order on our website. The texts in each catalogue from 2014 are by our curator, Liz Wylie, unless otherwise noted. Our publications that accompany the exhibitions are considered an integral function of the public gallery network, as they disseminate and preserve information about the artists and their work, and provide a forum for in-depth curatorial discussion and analysis. Our series of black-and-white, pamphlet-style catalogues for the Reynolds Gallery shows are inexpensive to produce and are therefore free to the visiting public. It is a curatorial cornerstone at the Kelowna Art Gallery that each exhibition be accompanied by a publication. In the 2014 year we were most pleased to have published seven catalogues, which are listed on this page in the side bar. These publications form the legacy component of our work as a public gallery. In 2014 we continued to focus on the growth of the permanent collection and were able to add twenty-nine new works to its holdings (see the Acquisitions section of this Annual Report for details). As always, we are most appreciative of the generosity of donors to the art collection, without which we could not build it for the benefit of the community. Thanks also to the members of the acquisitions committee of the Board, for their thoughtful and considered opinions and decisions. Ann Kipling: The Falkland Drawings: a thirty-five-year survey. main essay written by Robin Laurence, introduction by Liz Wylie. Our monthly articles on the current exhibitions at the Gallery published by Kelowna’s Capital News continued throughout the 2014 year. This is one important way in which we help promote community awareness of the Gallery’s offerings. Christos Dikeakos: Nature Morte. texts by Liz Wylie, Jeff Wall, Claudia Beck, and Harold Rhenisch. I extend my sincere thanks to my staff team in the curatorial department: Clea Haugo, Registrar, and Mike O’Doherty, Preparator, and our freelance installation assistant, Maureen Lisle. Their hard work and important contributions cannot be overstated. Online publications for The Artist’s Garden Project: Lynden Beesley: Hortus Conclusus I appreciate the support and hard work of the Board of Directors and all the Gallery staff and thank them for helping to make this gallery an inspiring place to work. One-on-One: Man and Nature: Jenny Western and Kenneth Lavallee Art Dossiers series – accompanying exhibitions in the Mardell G. Reynolds Gallery: Respectfully submitted, Liz Wylie, Curator David Rokeby: Very Nervous System. Marc Siegner: Adaptation. Gary Spearin: iNifiNiTi. 5 Unreal Exhibitions Treadgold / Bullock Gallery January 11 to March 9, 2014 Unreal This exhibition came to us from the Vancouver Art Gallery, circulated as part of their Across the Province program. It featured works drawn from the permanent collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery and explored the ongoing reach of Surrealism in modern art. March 22 to June 15, 2014 Ann Kipling: The Falkland Drawings: a thirty-five-year survey This was the third in our Okanagan Artist series of exhibitions, in which we survey the work of an established, senior artist living in our midst, and create a major publication to accompany the show. A sweep of Kipling’s landscape-based works on paper went around the room, punctuated by a small selection of her goat images. June 21 to October 5, 2014 Christos Dikeakos: Nature Morte Ann Kipling: The Falkland Drawings: a thirty-five-year survey Vancouver-based conceptual photographer Christos Dikeakos showed his Okanagan-orchardthemed works for the first time. The exhibition also contained installation works, including the artist’s collection of pristine vintage fruit box labels. October 11, 2014 to January 4, 2015 7: Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated This large exhibition of works by First Nations artists who formed this important group in the 1970s came to us from the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina. It was curated by MacKenzie’s associate curator, Michelle LaVallee. Christos Dikeakos: Nature Morte 6 David Rokeby: Very Nervous System Exhibitions Mardell G. Reynolds Gallery January 4 to April 6, 2014 David Rokeby: Very Nervous System This fascinating and captivating sound installation piece was circulated to us by the Carleton University Gallery in Ottawa. Visitors enjoyed physically exploring the space with gesture and movement to activate the sounds recorded by the artist, who is an award-winning, internationally known artist based in Toronto. April 12 to June 29, 2014 One on One: Man and Nature: Jenny Western with Kenneth Lavallee The first in a new exhibition series of ours for which we commission an emerging First Nations curator to select an emerging First Nations artist with whom they would like to work, this show featured new paintings by Winnipeg-based artist Kenneth Lavallee that were produced specifically for this exhibition. One on One: Man and Nature July 5 to September 28, 2014 Marc Siegner: Adaptation Edmonton-based artist Marc Siegner created a dense, visually rich installation stemming from several visits to China over the last few years, where he stayed in a run-down neighbourhood at the edge of Beijing. The work documents some of the residents and their surroundings, and included drawing on photographs output onto scrolls, as well as a video. October 4, 2014 to January 11, 2015 Gary Spearin: iNifiNiTi Ontario-based Gary Spearin is a conceptual artist who works in several media. For his installation of small paintings he made a selection for our space from the total number produced to date and installed them in two grids on opposite walls. The paintings are titled by fictional dates, not the dates upon which they were painted. Gary Spearin: iNifiNiTi 7 Hortus Conclusus in the Fall of 2014 Exhibitions Rotary Courtyard Spring 2014 and will run to Spring 2015 The Artist’s Garden series In 2013 we launched a new series of commissioned works in the outdoor courtyard space. In the spring of 2014 Kelowna-based artist Lynden Beesley created Hortus Conclusus, a medieval-inspired garden that centred around her bronze sculpture that doubled as a fountain. Four separate raised beds were planted with herbs and other plants that were used in medieval times for strewing, dyeing, medicine and cooking. The project was accompanied by an online publication accessed through the gallery’s website. Kelowna International Airport satellite exhibition space November 4, 2013 to May 5, 2014 Glenn Clark: Best of Seven Glenn Clark: Best of Seven Penticton-based artist Glenn Clark created a piece based on a vintage table hockey game, writ large. May 5 to November 3, 2014 Crystal Pryzbille: Wish Kelowna-based artist Crystal Przybille created giant wings linked with a trailing red ribbon. The piece was intended to make reference to the human longing for and efforts toward flight. November 3, 2014 to May 11, 2015 Johann Wessels: Side Show Penticton-based artist Johann Wessels made a caravan of wheeled carts or wagons, reminiscent of a travelling carnival. He thought of his piece as a parallel to touring exhibitions of art – the production rolls into town, and people turn out to look. Crystal Pryzbille: Wish 8 Day Job Exhibitions The Front project space January 18 to March 2, 2014 Day Job Day Job was a collaboration with Opus Framing and Art Supplies, and featured the work of approximately twenty-five past and present staff members of Opus Framing and Art Supplies, Kelowna. Day Job was guest curated by past Opus employee Neena Sood. March 7 to June 15, 2014 Art in Action: Back to Basics The Kelowna Art Gallery hosted our 28th annual Art in Action exhibition in 2014. This exhibition featured approximately 125 works of art created by students in Kelowna’s public and private high schools. Art in Action: Back to Basics is a celebration of the creativity and artistic talent of local youth. Each year, high-school students are asked to explore their imagination, creating their own creative visions of life through painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and photography. June 13 to July 26, 2014 Art in Action: Back to Basics Kelowna Art Gallery Teachers’ Exhibition Each year we display works of art created by teachers who teach the Gallery’s fall and winter art classes. We offer approximately thirty courses per year, and students learn subjects such as drawing, painting, and mixed media from some of the best teachers in Kelowna. September 20 to December 6, 2014 The Power of Women’s Creativity: Past, Present & Future The Kelowna Art Gallery and the Central Okanagan Women’s Resource & Education Foundation collaborated on an exhibition in the fall of 2014 that honoured and celebrated the 85th anniversary of the 1929 Persons Case, and Women’s History Month. December 13, 2014 to January 25, 2015 Members’ Exhibition: Bring out Your Best In December we hosted our annual members’ exhibition. The Gallery’s core programs such as our School Tour Program, Art Adventures, our high school exhibition Art in Action, and Family Sundays, continue to be well received, and we engaged children and youth in a variety of dynamic exhibition-related programs. In 2014 we also had a lot of success with our Quick Talks program, which was developed by Education Coordinator Brenda Feist, and our adult art class program, which we run in the fall and winter of each year. CONNECT In 2014, we continued our CONNECT program for the fourth year. CONNECT is an art program developed for adults with developmental disabilities (AWDD). CONNECT consists of a series of sixweek-long art classes that run throughout the year. Classes are taught by local artists, and each class is focused on a different theme or medium. In 2014 we received funds from Community Living British Columbia to run ten programs for AWDD living in our community. We aim to make the gallery a dynamic community space where AWDD and their caregivers will feel welcome and inspired. In 2014 we linked our activities to the exhibition Christos Dikeakos: Nature Morte. The Gallery hosted an apple-piebaking competition, in which 45 entrants baked their best pie. There were categories for youth, adult, and senior, and the pies were judged by local chefs, and well known radio and TV celebrities. We also took part in the Friday evening Culture Crawl of Culture Days, and then throughout the weekend we offered a variety of family-friendly, hands-on activities, exhibition tours, and behindthe-scenes tours of the Gallery’s facility. Monthly articles focusing on current and upcoming exhibitions, written by the Gallery’s Curator, Liz Wylie, continued to be published in Kelowna’s Capital News. The trend towards news and articles being published online continued in 2014. The Gallery benefited significantly from editorial coverage provided by a number of media outlets that publish solely online, including KelownaNow.com, Castanet.net, oook.ca, OkanaganArtReview.com, infonews.ca, and ArtReview.com. In addition, media that have traditionally published in print such as the Capital News, and The Daily Courier, expanded their online publishing, which helped us in spreading the word. Full-page advertisements were continued in 2014 in the City of Kelowna’s Recreation & Cultural Services Activity and Program Guide. Efforts were made to encourage visitors and tourists to visit the Kelowna Art Gallery by our participating in local tourism initiatives, for example, the Gallery was featured in Tourism Kelowna’s Official Visitors’ Guide, and we were included in listings in several other visitors’ guides. In addition, the distribution of the Gallery’s rack cards through visitor centres, as well as monthly updates on the Kelowna Cultural District visitor kiosks, provided visitors with up-to-date information on Gallery exhibitions and events. Local television stations supported Gallery activities by covering a variety of exhibitions, programs, and special events in news stories and events calendar listings. Global Okanagan and the local program go! Okanagan, which airs on Kelowna’s SHAW Cable affiliate, were especially supportive. Kelowna’s radio stations also spread the word by broadcasting interviews, sound bites, and PSAs. CBC Radio One, AM 1150, Q103.1 FM, and 103.9 Juice FM all provided media coverage in 2014. The Kelowna Art Gallery continues to connect with members through a monthly e-newsletter, Journal newsletter, printed three times annually, and through invitations to opening receptions, special events or other public programs. Our e-newsletter was also sent out to individuals, community partners, and other interested parties who wished to stay connected with the Gallery. In 2014, social media remained the most immediate and effective marketing tool for the Gallery. The Gallery’s Facebook page surpassed the 1,500 “Friends” mark, our YouTube page featured over 20 videos of interviews with exhibiting artists, and our network of Twitter followers climbed to over 3,500. The Gallery would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who continually help to make our fundraising events and opening receptions so successful. Please take a moment to recognize their efforts by reading the names listed in this report on page 22. Amy Zurrer 17 Marketing and Events GO Party! 9: Under a Full Moon GO Party! Event The Kelowna Art Gallery’s popular GO Party! series continued in 2014 with a sold-out event held in November. GO Party! 9: Under a Full Moon was held on Friday, November 7, 2014. The evening featured a live DJ, fire poi performances, fun adult art activities, refreshments, and prizes – all inspired by November’s full moon. As a fun option, guests were invited to come dressed in black and white and with accents of silver – due to silver’s association with the moon. Three exhibitions were open for guests to explore including 7: Professional Native Indian Artists Inc., Gary Spearin: iNifiNiTi, and The Power of Women’s Creativity. Proceeds from this fundraising event went towards the Gallery’s educational programming, including our School Tours program, Family Sundays, and Art Adventures camps. Under a Full Moon was generously presented by Meiklejohn Architects Inc., and proudly supported by Q103.1, Mission Hill Family Estate, Tree Brewing Co., and Urban Distilleries Please see page 20 to view a full list of all the generous supporters, sponsors, and donors for this event. 18 Marketing and Events Treasures from the Attic After a successful event in 2013, Treasures from the Attic returned to the gallery on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Guests joined local art and antiques appraiser, Peter Blundell, to learn the value of their collectibles. The Gallery was busy throughout this special day with both members and non-members bringing in their items for assessment. The Gallery looks forward to hosting this annual event again in 2015. Facility Rentals at the Gallery Facility rentals continued to increase in 2014, leading to more partnerships with community groups and individuals. This growth also resulted in our hosting more visitors at the Gallery. Facility rentals help to support ongoing community programs and continued access to the visual arts in our community. 19 Donors and Sponsors The Kelowna Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges the support of our donors and sponsors throughout the year. Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors' Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on our judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, we consider internal control relevant to the Art Gallery’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Art Gallery’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Kelowna Art Gallery Association as at December 31, 2014, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-forprofit organizations. The Art Gallery is a registered charity under the Income Tax Act and, accordingly, is exempt from income taxes, provided certain requirements of the Income Tax Act are met. 1. Significant accounting policies: These financial statements are prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not for profit organizations. The Society's significant accounting policies are as follows (a) Fund Accounting: i) Operating fund: The operating fund includes the Art Gallery’s operating and tangible capital assets and principal operations. ii) Permanent collection fund: The permanent collection fund includes donations and transactions related to the permanent art work collection held by the Art Gallery in trust for the City of Kelowna. iii) Building reserve fund: The building reserve fund includes donations, fundraising and expenses incurred related to future improvements and expansion to the Art Gallery’s facility. (b) Revenue recognition: Unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue of the appropriate fund in the year received or receivable if the amount to be received can be reasonably estimated and collection is reasonably assured. Externally restricted contributions related to general operations are recognized as revenue of the appropriate fund in the year in which the related expenses are incurred. Contributions restricted for the purchase of equipment are deferred and amortized into revenue at a rate corresponding with the amortization rate for the related equipment. 5 KELOWNA ART GALLERY ASSOCIATION Notes to Financial Statements Year ended December 31, 2014 1. Significant accounting policies (continued): (c) Contributed services: Individuals and organizations contribute numerous volunteer hours each year to assist the Art Gallery in carrying out its operations. The Art Gallery also subleases its land and building from the City of Kelowna for annual rent of $1, plus applicable property taxes. Because of the difficulty of determining the fair value, contributed services and business premises rental are not recognized in the financial statements. (d) Cash and cash equivalents: Cash and cash equivalents include cash and instruments readily convertible into cash. (e) Tangible capital assets: Tangible capital assets purchases are recorded at cost. Amortization is provided on using the following bases and annual rates: Computer equipment Computer software Furniture and equipment Leasehold improvements Basis Rate Declining balance Straight line Declining balance Straight line 30% 20% 20% 20% When the Art Gallery’s management determines that certain tangible capital assets no longer contribute to the Art Gallery’s ability to provide services, the carrying amount of these assets are written down to amortization expense. (f) Permanent collection: The Art Gallery’s permanent collection, ownership of which vests with the residents of the City of Kelowna, is not capitalized. Additions to the collection are expensed in the period in which the item is acquired. Contributions to the collection are reported as revenue and expenses if the fair value can be reasonably determined. 6 KELOWNA ART GALLERY ASSOCIATION Notes to Financial Statements Year ended December 31, 2014 1. Significant accounting policies (continued): (g) Non-monetary donations: i) Donations of art work and cultural property: Donations of art work, other than cultural property art work, are recorded as donations at appraised fair market value once the appraised fair market value is determined and the donation is accepted by the Art Gallery’s Acquisition Committee. Donations of cultural property are recorded as donations at appraised fair market value once the donation is accepted by the Art Gallery’s Acquisition Committee and certified by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board as cultural property. ii) Contributed services and materials: Individuals and organizations contribute numerous volunteer hours each year to assist the Art Gallery in carrying out its operations. Because of the difficulty of determining the fair market value of these contributed services and materials and business premises rental, the fair market values are not recognized in the financial statements except where the fair market value can be reasonably estimated. (h) Use of estimates: The preparation of financial statements requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the year. Actual results could differ from those estimates. (i) Financial instruments: The Art Gallery measures cash and restricted cash at fair value and accounts receivable and accounts payable and accrued liabilities at amortized cost. Changes in fair value of cash and restricted cash are recognized in the statement of operations in the periods in which they arise. 7 KELOWNA ART GALLERY ASSOCIATION Notes to Financial Statements Year ended December 31, 2014 2. Restricted cash and cash equivalents: Restricted cash and cash equivalents includes cash and cash equivalents held for future permanent collection additions, future improvements to the Art Gallery facility and cash received for future capital expenditures, which are not available for day to day unrestricted operations of the Art Gallery. 3. The Art Gallery operates under a lease and operating agreement with the City of Kelowna, which has a ten-year term (expiring December 31, 2016) with two five year renewal periods at the Art Gallery’s option. The lease and operating agreement provides for total rent of $10 for the initial ten year term. 9.
