KCRMD Receives Local Park and Recreation Grant
The Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District (KCRMD) was awarded a 2015
Local Park and Recreation Grant from Jefferson County Open Space for
$54,250 for installation of a new playground at the Community Center.
The new playground has been planned as part of the bond improvement
projects for the Community Center campus and will be a new, separate
playground from the current smaller playground serving the KCRMD’s
preschool program. The new playground will be designed for children
5-12 years of age and will be located in a separate area of the campus from
the current preschool playground. It is estimated the grant award will fund
approximately 35 percent of the total cost of the playground.
The Local Park and Recreation Grants are available annually to
governments located in Jefferson County through an application
process. Construction of the new playground is scheduled to take place
in the spring of 2016 in conjunction with the site development of the
Community Center campus bond projects.

The first phase of planning for the
bond projects was completed with a
presentation of the Schematic Design
package to the Master Association and
Metropolitan District Boards at the April
Joint Study Session. I would like to thank
all of our resident volunteers who have
helped get us to this point. This includes
our focus group participants and all
of you who attended one of the open
houses or submitted your comments to
[email protected].
While no additional public meetings
are scheduled at this time, the Boards are
provided with monthly project updates at
their Joint Study Sessions, which occur on
the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.
at the Ranch House. All residents are
welcome to attend. In addition, as plans are
updated they are loaded onto our website
for your review – just click on the Bond
and Improvement Projects link under the
Administration tab to follow our progress.
Assuming all went as scheduled last week,
two fence projects were completed. The
rail fence that borders the north side of the
greenbelt that runs from Continental Divide
to Chatfield was replaced by Standard Fence
Company. The brick columns that are part
of the fence that runs along Chatfield Ave.
were repaired by Commercial Fence and
Iron Works.

Spring is the time when many folks are
thinking about getting outside, cleaning up
their properties and planning projects that
will enhance your outdoor living space for
the coming season. However, the largest
number of submittals is for the exterior
painting of homes.
I thought it might be helpful to share
some tips on things to think about when
getting your house painted. The preparation
work done prior to application of the paint
is of primary importance! What will the
job entail? Caulking? Scraping? Powerwashing? Replacement of dried out and/
or rotten boards? Quality paint? Method
of application? Number of coats? These
are some of the details to discuss with
prospective painting contractors. A job
well-done will surely last far longer than
one that is poorly done.
If you have any questions regarding
architectural submittals, feel free to contact
me at 303-979-1876, ext. 119, or
[email protected].
Community Garage Sale May 29-30
Start stockpiling your stuff! The fourth annual Ken-Caryl Community-Wide

Many good comments were captured
from Board members. During the
focus group meetings, the open house
meetings and via the project email
address, there was a strong contingency
of residents who would prefer the wading
pool remain at the Community Center.
The design team considered this an
important business decision that required
direction from the Boards.
During the Joint Study Session, the
design team presented the pros and
cons of each option: 1) wading pool and
2) splash pad. When asked about the
cost of each, there was not a significant
difference between the two options.
The Boards unanimously agreed that a
splash pad is the preferred option for the
Community Center. This is an amenity that
is currently missing from Ken-Caryl Ranch
facilities. A splash pad would have many
advantages: a longer season, no lifeguard
requirement, and provides a modern
and interactive amenity. The Boards also
recognized that wading pools exist within
two facilities currently - the Bradford Pool
and the Ranch House Pool.

bond projects to [email protected].

Open Space Weed
Management
Exceptional Home in Cherry Creek North
Coming Soon!
Spring is here and along with warmer
temperatures and longer days, weeds
are starting to appear in lawns, parks and
open space areas. As part of an integrated
management approach, herbicides are
used to combat weed infestations in
the open space. This year’s herbicide
applications will be conducted from
approximately April to July depending on
weather and growing conditions.
Bare ground areas like picnic pads, hard
surface trails and kiosk pads are treated first
with a pre-emergent herbicide. Applications
can be conducted before weeds emerge
and these herbicides prevent weeds from
germinating in the area throughout the
growing season.
The next weeds to manage are the
biennial weed species like musk thistle and
knapweed. Knapweed and musk thistle are
list B noxious weed species, which mandate
that landowners make attempts to control
and stop the spread of these weed species.
The first year and early spring growth form
for these weeds is a rosette of basal leaves
lying close to the ground. At this stage they
are most vulnerable to chemical application
because of their increased uptake of water
and nutrients. Even though knapweed and
musk thistle can be effectively treated all
the way up to the budding stages, we have
found that spring and fall spraying in the
rosette stage is most effective.
As spring turns into summer, the Ranger
staff turns their attention to deeply rooted
perennial weeds like Canada thistle.
Spraying Canada thistle and other deeply
rooted perennials is more effective when
the plants have bolted and grown to
approximately 10 inches in height. At this
point, they are still transporting nutrients
to the root system, which will allow for
more herbicide uptake.
The weeds being managed this season
are very aggressive invaders that have
the potential to take over native plant
communities. Priority was given to areas
where infestations pose the worst threat
to native plant communities and where
they are bordering home lots. A contract
herbicide applicator and the in-house
open space maintenance crew will be
performing the herbicide applications.

Great Horned Owls
By Environmental Education Specialist
Gabrielle Chisholm
Whooo has a large body, two prominent
feathered tufts on its head, and big yellow
to orange-ish eyes? You guessed it: the
Great Horned Owl. This magnificent bird
of prey has a wide range from Canada
to the tropics. Great Horned Owls can
survive in many different environments,
including forests, swamps, deserts, tundra
or your backyard. They do not make their
own nest. Instead, these owls are “thrifty”
and reuse the nests of other large birds or
squirrels and won’t add or change a thing.
NEED A
TUTOR?
Sometimes, a hollow in a tree, rock face or
building will do the trick as a nest!
Great Horned Owls are the first to
settle in a nest compared with other
owls. In Colorado they start courting and
searching for a nesting territory as early
as January. Great Horned Owls do a lot of
hooting to find each other to begin their
courtship. The female has a higher pitch
to her hoots, which helps distinguish a
match. Once paired up, the female will
normally lay two to three eggs, which
are incubated for about a month. Raising
these chicks is a two-parent job! The male
and female both take turns incubating the
eggs and feeding them once they have
hatched. The nestling period is about 42
days, which explains why both parents are
needed to hunt for food.
As mentioned, the Great Horned Owl
is a bird a prey, also known as a raptor,
which means it hunts for its food. These
powerful predators can take down
other birds and even mammals
larger than themselves. Usually,
mice, voles, frogs, birds and
rabbits are on the menu, but
many other reptiles, mammals
and invertebrates can be hunted,
making the Great Horned Owl’s
diet the most diverse of all the
North American raptors. While
perched, this owl will spot its prey,
then quietly swoop down and
snatch it with its talons.
To learn more about Great
Horned Owls, register for “Nesting
Great Horned Owls” on Friday,
May 1 from 6-7:30 p.m. This is a
family-friendly program, where
we will search for nesting owls
and hopefully see some fluffy
white chicks!

In Memoriam
Living and Loving Ken-Caryl
21-Year Resident AND Local Expert
Thomas Green Jr.
Chuck Mawhinney
Thomas Alfred Green Jr., longtime
resident of the Enclave on Ken-Caryl Ranch,
passed away March 14. Tom and his wife
Priscilla moved to the Enclave in November
1982. Theirs was only the fourth closing
in the then fledgling development. Tom
and Priscilla were the longest continuous
residents in the Valley.
Tom enjoyed relating the experience of
their first winter in the Enclave. Snows were
heavy and there was no plowing of even
Club Drive, let alone roadways within the
Enclave. Tom depended on the kindness of
strangers with snowmobiles to ferry him to
cleared roads so he could get to work.
Born June 1, 1927, in Atlantic City
to Thomas and Kathryn Boice Green,
Tom served his country during World
War II, pastored churches in the New
Jersey Conference, and then served as a
Servicemen’s Chaplain in Washington, D.C.,
until 1974. He then began a long career
as Chaplain at Porter Memorial Hospital in
Denver until 1990 when he retired.
Tom will be remembered by early
morning swimmers at the Community
Center, as well as his friends and neighbors.
He is survived by daughter Judith of Texas,
son Tom of Denver and their families as
well as five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. He is preceded in death by
wife Priscilla, grandson Caleb and daughter
Martha Lou.
Longtime Ken-Caryl Ranch resident
Chuck Mawhinney recently passed away
from complications of a heart attack. Chuck,
his wife Annette (Lege) and son Michael
moved to Ken-Caryl in February 1992.
Chuck taught at Metropolitan State
University of Denver from 1991 until he
retired in 2011. Chuck was often seen on
Ken-Caryl Ranch biking, hiking or just
out for a walk with his family. He was a
longtime member of the Ken-Caryl Ranch
Foundation where he worked on projects/
activities such as Save the Hogback, Chili
Cookoffs and giving scholarships to local
high school students.
He was also known to his Ken-Caryl friends
as a windsurfer. He belonged to the Rocky
Mountain Windsurfing Association and
spent a lot of time at many of the local lakes
waiting for the right wind to come along
and propel him across the water or ice.
Some of his neighbors took advantage of
the windsurfing club’s learn-to-windsurf day
and actually were able to try out the sport
for themselves. Chuck volunteered to run
some of the windsurfing club events and in
recent years was the club’s race director.
One of his other volunteer activities
was summer water sports camp for
the Mile High Girl Scouts. The camp
explored windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking
and more. Over the many years he
volunteered, Chuck was able to enroll
each of his three grand-daughters, who
all live out of state, into the week-long
day camp. He took pride in being able
to treat them to the experience and was
overjoyed at having them each visit. He
loved spending time with them at the
camp as well as some extra grand-dad
days of fun at local parks.
Chuck enjoyed spending time with family,
traveling and camping. He is sadly missed
by his wife, three children, four grandchildren, sister and many other relatives.

Are you curious about book clubs? Have you
ever wished you could start one with a group
of friends? Now, thanks to Jefferson County
Public Library and the Jefferson County Library
Foundation, you can!
Beginning April 1, Jefferson County residents
can check out book club kits for up to six weeks.
Each kit includes up to 10 copies of a popular
book and a guide to facilitate discussion. Seventy
different book titles are available, including
popular book club titles like:
• All the Light We Cannot See, by
Anthony Doerr
• The Arsonist, by Sue Miller
• The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green
• The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt
• Unbroken: a World War II Story of Survival, by
Laura Hillenbrand
• …and more.
“These kits are great for members of existing
book clubs who don’t want to have to purchase
books, or for start-up clubs who want to see
what book clubs are all about,” said Pam Nissler,
executive director, JCPL. “Summer is a great time
to kick back, read and visit with friends, and we
hope these kits will help to facilitate that.”
Residents can check out a book club kit
by accessing the library’s online catalog at
jeffcolibrary.org and doing a word search for
“book club kits.” Kits can be placed on hold
and sent to any Jefferson County Library
location to be held for pick-up. These book
club kits are being made available through
the generous support of the Jefferson County
Library Foundation.

Minding Our Business
Twisted Comfort
Restaurant
By Community Relations Director Victoria DeSair
Everyone’s heard of good, old-fashioned
comfort food, but have you heard of
comfort food with a twist? Lester Smith
and Bill Richards own Twisted Comfort
Restaurant, located next to King Soopers
on Ken Caryl Ave. They are both former
Information Technology (IT) professionals
with a passion for cooking.
“When our company decided to start
outsourcing its IT work, we decided to do
something that has always been a dream
of ours and open a restaurant where we
could make good, fresh, home-cooked
comfort food,” said Lester. “We wanted to
serve food that is never frozen and not
what you get in most chain restaurants;
food just like mom used to make. We
take the classic comfort foods and give
them a twist. This twist may be in how it is
prepared, a change to the ingredients or
additional ingredients to give the dish a
surprising upgrade for the palate.”
Lester is a Native Coloradoan, born and
raised in Southeastern Colorado. He put
himself through college as a cook and
kitchen manager in Fort Collins. Bill grew
up in Iowa but has lived in Colorado for
more than 25 years now.
Lester and Bill said they love meeting
and talking to the locals who eat at the
restaurant, as well as creating new recipes
to put on the menu or run as specials.
“We welcome suggestions - if there is
something you would like to see on our
menu or as a special, let us know.”
The restaurant offers specialties such as
a Twisted Loaf Sandwich, Bonzai Cheese
Steak Sandwich, Poutine, Mac Daddy and
Cheese, Chicken Fried Steak and much,
much more. Twisted Comfort has a number
of Ken-Caryl residents as customers, but
the restaurant is hoping to have even
more. If you go to the restaurant and
mention you read this article, you will
receive 10 percent off your entire bill.
Twisted Comfort is located at 11727 W.
Ken Caryl Ave., between King Soopers and
Dairy Queen. The restaurant is open for
lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday
and also for breakfast Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. It is closed on Monday. You can
contact the restaurant at 303-904-6420 or
[email protected], or visit their
website at www.twistedcomfortco.com.

Ken-Caryl Art Guild Presents Laura Givens
Bradford’s Hogback
Hustle 5K and 1-Mile
Family Fun Run
Submitted by Michele Sires-DeLorean
Digital designer Laura Givens will be featured
at the Thursday, May 14 meeting of the Ken-Caryl
Art Guild at Rox Bar & Grill, 12684 W. Indore Place
in Littleton. The program will take place at 7 p.m.,
following the regularly scheduled business
meeting at 6 p.m.
Artist, designer, cartoonist, illustrator, silk
screener, painter and occasional writer, Laura
is always looking for new ways to answer her
creative muse. A visit to her website reveals
an extensive portfolio, mostly in digital media,
including illustrations for magazines, book covers,
comics and game cards.
“Sometimes it all starts with a thought and a
‘what if.’ Sometimes I see something and realize
that there’s something there that no one else is
seeing. When that happens, I just have to get it
down before it slips away into the mists,”
said Laura.
Writing is a new hat for Laura in the last few
years, and she has written hard sci-fi stories, space
operas, zombies, fantasy, weird westerns and
steampunk epics. A list of her published works
with details can be found on her website at
www.lauragivens-artist.com.

1-Mile Family Fun Run will be Sunday, April
26 at Bradford Intermediate School. The 5K
is at 9 a.m. and the 1-Mile Fun Run is at
10 a.m. The scenic course travels through
the beautiful Ken-Caryl Valley. This event
is open to the entire community as well as
anyone who wants to hustle behind the
hogback. Both runners and walkers are
welcome.
All participants will receive a run t-shirt
designed by a Bradford student. Medals
will be awarded to the top three male and
female runners in each age group. The race
will be using disposable chip timing to
make it as easy as possible for participants
to track their time. Great music, exciting
prizes and food will also be available,
so don’t miss out! All proceeds from the
run will benefit programs for Bradford
Elementary Schools.

On Saturday, April 25, the Jefferson
County Sheriff’s Office will be working
to remove potentially dangerous
controlled substances from medicine
cabinets. Jeffco’s Drug Take-Back Day
provides an opportunity for the public to
surrender expired, unwanted or unused
pharmaceuticals and other medications
for destruction. These drugs are a
potential source of supply for illegal use
and an unacceptable risk to public health
and safety.
Sheriff’s representatives will be set up
at two drop-off locations in the county on
Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The
locations are:

not be accepted. To recycle household
chemicals and other hazardous materials

Recycling Event Partners
The Master Association offers the “Not

as a service to residents. The event
wouldn’t be possible without our event
partners. Electronics will be recycled by
R2 Stewardship Responsible Computer
& Electronic Recycling Solutions. Eagle
Automotive Services, located on Chatfield
Ave. in the Ken-Caryl Market Place, is
recycling the tires, and GreenSheen
Eco-Friendly Paints will be on-site to
recycle paint. Waste Connections will
handle all trash and large items, and the
Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District
handles the chipper and tree limbs.
We had CCW install one brand new window and
relocate an existing window in another wall of our
home. He had everything from the demolition to the
drywalling scheduled down to the "T." We were very
pleased with how well everything went and the final
result was nothing short of exceptional! The new
windows add not only character but value to our
home. We highly recommend Colorado Classic
Windows and plan on using them when we replace
our two patio sliders with new swing style. Preston’s
a man of his word and stands behind his work. You
won't be disappointed if you hire him.

Ken-Caryl Resident
Submitted by Rosemary Lewis, Ken-Caryl Ranch Historical Society
We are familiar with the story of Robert Bradford, founder of Bradford City, the Bradford
Wagon Road, and the Bradford House. During the 1860s, while Bradford was setting up
his various enterprises, at least a half-dozen other pioneer families also occupied the area
between Bradford City and Deer Creek in what is now Ken-Caryl Valley. Not surprisingly,
they settled on the relatively rich bottomlands along the creeks.
According to a family history, “In the Footsteps of the Hotchkiss Brothers,” Enos
Hotchkiss arrived in Denver in July 1859, along with his 20-year-old wife, Hannah, and
5-year-old son Monette. The family settled near Bradford, where three more children
were born by 1865. They occasionally
operated a toll gate, possibly the gate on
the Bradford Road, and leased out some
of their property for livestock grazing
and general agriculture to bring in some
cash. But Enos was always on the lookout
for new opportunities, so on July 2, 1867,
he lit out for the Pacific Northwest to go
prospecting and did not return for four
years. In his absence he obtained the
patent on nearly 320 acres of land in two
separate transactions recorded in 1868.
Hannah was left to manage the farm
and her four children on her own, with
whatever help she could find.
When Enos returned on July 7, 1871,
he found his wife and children living
in Denver with another man, Robert
Hamilton, and Hannah’s 10-month-old
baby. Hannah had managed without
Enos, by moving back to the safety of
town, renting out the land and dutifully
paying property taxes. Enos quickly

miners, hired hands and families
with school-aged children. To
the north was the Bradford
family. Asa Pangborn and
Chauncey Olmstead were both
musicians who served in the
Colorado 1st Cavalry during
the Civil War. They and their
wives were in their 20s and both
families had young children.
Slightly older were miner
Charles Cogswill, who boarded
with Bradford, and farmer
Joel Densmore who also had
children. Altogether about 10
children called the Valley home
in 1870.
