JULY AND AUGUST 2014 MAY AND JUNE 2015 Grace and peace be to each of you from our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I would like to give an update on Stephanie’s, health. I thought this would be appropriate from time to time so that everyone would have the same information. We are very thankful for the continued prayers, encouragement, and support from Kernstown UMC. We are truly blessed and humbled by your outpouring of love. Stephanie has been diagnosed with Dystonia. “Dystonia is a movement disorder. Dystonia is characterized by persistent or intermittent muscle contractions causing abnormal, often repetitive, movements, postures, or both. The movements are usually patterned and twisting, and may resemble a tremor. Dystonia is classified by: 1. clinical characteristics (including age of onset, body distribution, nature of the symptoms, and associated features such as additional movement disorders or neurological symptoms) and 2. Cause (which includes changes or damage to the nervous system and inheritance). Doctors use these classifications to guide diagnosis and treatment. There are multiple forms of dystonia, and dozens of diseases and conditions may include dystonia as a symptom. Dystonia may affect a single body area or be generalized throughout multiple muscle groups. Dystonia affects men, women, and children of all ages and backgrounds. Estimates suggest that no fewer than 300,000 people are affected in the United States and Canada alone. Dystonia causes varying degrees of disability and pain, from mild to severe. There is not yet a cure, but multiple treatment options exist and scientists around the world are actively pursuing research toward new therapies. Although there are several forms of dystonia and the symptoms may outwardly appear quite different, the element that all forms share is the repetitive, patterned, and often twisting involuntary muscle contractions. Dystonia is a chronic disorder, but the vast majority of dystonias do not impact cognition, intelligence, or shorten a person's life span.” Stephanie has been referred to Dr. Madeline Harrison, who is a Movement Distorder Specialist, at the University of Virginia. We are currently waiting to hear from Dr. Harrison’s office for an appointment. Stephanie continues to work as a full-time substitute teacher at Armel Elementary School until the end of this school year. Please continue to pray for Stephanie’s healing and that her and I may learn all that God desires to teach us during this time. Ashley Heflin -4- YOUTH NEWS May……we run into a lot of holidays (Mother’s Day, Apple Blossom, and Memorial Day.) So our calendar is pretty slim. We are planning a youth retreat the weekend of May 23rd so keep your eyes and ears open for more details coming your way. June is just around the corner and we’ve also had to trim our schedule due to work schedules of leaders. That doesn’t mean the fun will end for summer. Look for our summer schedule in the youth room over the next few weeks. We’ve got some community service days planned as well as great fellowship gatherings for our group (and who could forget The songs, the dancing, the magic, and of course the VBS!) fantastic youth…… The compliments about Youth Sunday are continuing to pour in! We were so blessed by May (and June’s) Fun Fact about your Youth Director: our amazing youth that completely blew me out of the Happy Father’s Day to all of the Dad’s out there! When water. I’m a their own. From the hymns, readings, prayers, skits, HUGE Star Wars fan (Carson and I are avid watchers of benedictions, etc…..it was all them. John and I provided Star Wars cartoons on Saturday mornings.) So I told leadership to make sure the service flowed, but ultimately Ashley I wanted to name our son Luke just so I could say, the power was in their hands. Again, we thank you as a “LUKE…… I AM YOUR FATHER.” Needless to say congregation for your unending support as well as to the that didn’t work and we settled on Carson. parents for their support in our group as well. We couldn’t have done it without you. Our next planned -Chris Heflin (Youth Director) Youth Sunday will be in September. ______________________________________________ The next few months are full of holidays; some we celebrate for fun while others we celebrate to remember CALLING ALL MUSICIANS! loved ones. I If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please look at Mother’s Day and Father’s Day as a great example contact Ronald Dye or Kelly Henshaw of this passage. Our parents taught us for 18 years on how ______________________________________________ to live. Whether it be by example, values, compassion shown, or overall character, we begin to become examples and servants to the world by our parents. So for this Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, I remind the youth to look at your parents as the disciples looked to Jesus. Jesus taught the disciples as an example, and our parents do the same for us. Be an example to the world. April was a low-key month. This was mainly due to our preparation for Youth Sunday. For the month of -5- MINISTRY TEAM NEWS Stewardship Moment What does a servant look like? “After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ fee, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13:5 (NIV) There is a feeling in the thirteenth chapter of John that we are there for one of the most significant events in history. What’s your picture of the atmosphere in the upper room where Jesus and his disciple met the night before Jesus died? Maybe hushed tones and a holy glow come to mind. Let me shatter that vision with a hefty dose of reality. We come in to excited noises. The disciples are expecting Jesus to make His move to take over soon, and they’ll go with Him to the very top. They talk about what that will be like. You can just imagine them dreaming. Suddenly the volume increases, no longer excitement, but argument. Which would be the greatest? The argument really began when that walked into the room. No one took time to wash the other’s feet. With thoughts of greatness on their minds, they had no time for an activity usually assigned to slaves. The fact that greatness is measured with the yard stick of service had not yet registered with them. There sits Jesus, hardly noticed as the others argue. No one sees Him get up and walk to the other side of the room. A few notice as he takes off His robe and pours a basin of water. Stunned silence overtakes them all as Jesus comes to each disciple and begins to wash their feet. Jesus washed their feet. God human flesh washed dirty feet. Scrubbing dusty toes – now that’s love made practical! Real love is an action, not a feeling. Everything was ready for someone to serve: the pitcher was there, the wash basin was there, the linen cloth was there. It just took a person to take it up. We hear Jesus say, “You should wash one another’s feet.” What does it mean to wash the feet of a disciple today? Ask yourself, why did Jesus wash the disciples’ feet? It wasn’t a religious ceremony, that’s for sure! He washed their feet because their feet were dirty!! How do you wash other’s feet? What does that mean? DO something that somebody else needs. Discussion: Who in your own family needs their feet washed today? (Pause for a few comments from your kids about whose feet smell!) Seriously: who has a practical need that you could all be part of meeting? Something to think about…. Brian Henshaw Stewardship Chair The months of March and April are always busy ones for the Worship and Wonder Team. We have opportunities to help plan the programs for Holy Week beginning with the waving of the Palms. Maundy Thursday services vary from year to year - this year we portrayed the Last Supper and those present were ushered to the table of twelve and received communion from Pastor Aaron. Two seats were left vacant- one draped in white representing Jesus and one draped in black representing Judas. A very effective portrayal! Special thanks go to Mary Lynn Smith for making the wonderful white and black chair covers! On Good Friday we had a Tenebrae service. The cross and altar were draped in black and lighted candles were place on the altar As Scriptures were read candles were extinguished and the congregation left in silence. A NEW VENTURE FOR WORSHIP AND WONDER AND KUMC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UNDER THE DIRECTION OF KELLY HENSHAW WE WERE ABLE TO PRESENT TO OUR CHURCH AND THE COMMUNITY The Worship committee held Journey to the Cross and Beyond, a Lenten prayer walk, on Thursday, April 2, Friday, April 3, and Saturday April 4, from 2-6 each day. We had approximately 60 people attend, as well as the 16 volunteers that helped before, during, and after the event. All in all, I feel it was Very successful! Many people that participated commented to us before leaving how much it moved them, and some were openly emotional about their experience. As with any new program we learned of ways we can improve on it in 2016. WE GIVE A "SHOUT OUT" TO KELLY AND ALL OF THE WORKERS FOR MAKING ALL OF THIS POSSIBLE. Plans are in the works for Mother's Day, Pentecost and Father's Day We continue with communion to the homebound - Please remember Nina and Peg Snapp in your prayers. If you know of others who need communion at home please contact Dee Dee at the church office at 667-7298 or [email protected] Your Worship and Wonder Committee -6- WE’RE CURIOUS TO KNOW . . . When was the last time you visited the Kernstown website? Let’s rephrase that question to: “Have you ever visited the website?” If the answer is “No”, we’d like some feedback as to why. Maybe we haven’t promoted it effectively. If you have visited, we’d also like your feedback so we may improve the site’s content. If you’re part of the few who use the site regularly, let us know what you like or dislike. There’s always room for improvement. Your ideas are valuable. We want to hear them! We don’t want to leave anyone in the dark. We want to keep you informed with all the latest events in our church family. We want to be able to reach out beyond our doors and have others know who we are and our passion for Jesus. When you have good news, you want to SHOUT IT OUT! The website is an awesome way to get the job done. We’re reaching out for your help. The website needs updated content and material. It needs fresh stories, faith testimonials, praise reports, humor, pictures, outreach resources, news . . . We can use people of all ages to be a part of our web team, collaborators. It helps attract people to your church. If someone wants to find a church in your area, how will they? The Yellow Pages? . . . wrong. Most people go straight to Google. 2. It connects people. Fellowship takes place even when people aren’t physically together. Church web sites give members a way to interact and fellowship throughout the week. This kind of interaction helps build unity. 3. It organizes church events. People stay up to date with your church’s events - from small groups to Sunday services. 4. It answers questions about the church. People have all kinds of questions about churches. Music? Nursery? Denomination? Core beliefs? These questions can be answered through the church’s web site. 5. It can serve as the church’s testimony. Within seconds of accessing your church’s site, a person forms opinions about your church—for better or worse. A good web site is a great way to communicate a good testimony. 6. It broadcasts your message globally. Instantly— without buying a ticket, experiencing jet lag, or eating air-7- line food, your church can reach as far as Europe, Asia, or Africa. Regardless of its size, your church can spread its message worldwide. 7. It saves you money on advertising. It provides a big marketing bang for the buck. Church web sites are way more visible and far less expensive than any other form of church advertising. 8. A church site stores your media. It provides a digital media library. Storing sermon recordings online is a great way to increase the longevity and reach of sermons. 9. It gives your church the relevance necessary to communicate today. This gener ation has witnessed the launch of the digital age. A church web site is the primary means of jumping on the information superhighway and reaching our generation for Christ. 10. It’s simply an alternate way of modern day evangelism. God is sover eign over ALL; yes, technology included. He uses every and all means to expand His kingdom. Print, radio, TV, audio and video media and now cyberspace are ours to use for His glory.
