The Torch
Message from Principal Beaton
Although it doesn’t seem possible, we are gearing up for graduation. Besides some
glimpses of nice weather, other signs of spring include: AP, ACT and MCA exams,
Diversity Day, the Arts and Activities Hall of Fame and spring sports season in full
swing, We are also preparing for the JFK Evening of Excellence where we will
honor our high achieving graduates.
As we move closer to graduation, I want to make sure families utilize this newsletter and the website to become aware of the upcoming events and procedures.
Soon, senior families will receive a special mailing in preparation for the 2015 commencement ceremony.
Juniors and Seniors should be aware of our academic expectations for Prom in May.
In order to purchase a ticket, students must be passing all of their classes or show a
commitment to improve by attending at least two after school homework help sessions during the ticket sales window.
Any 9th grade student who is failing a class is required to attend homework help
in the cafeteria every Tuesday after school until grades improve. An activity bus is
available to those who need transportation.
On Saturday, May 9th from 9 am to noon, JFK will be hosting our final family
engagement forum for the school year: It’s Time to Talk About Race. We hope to
see you and your family at this important community event. Please see the school
website for information and to register.
As a validation for our efforts, Kennedy recently received a Silver Star award for
innovation from MASSP, the statewide secondary principal association. This award
was given for our Lunch Lab intervention program. Lunch Lab is a systematic intervention which allows students to use their lunch period to complete missing work,
tests, quizzes and other assignments.

While we focus on testing, data and results at JFK, our school is more than a test
score. We want your child’s experience in academics, leadership, service and the
arts to prepare them for post-secondary education and for the world of work. A JFK
education is preparation for life.
Happy Spring!

Dimensions Academy High School Has Successful Inaugural Semester!
This fall twenty-four Bloomington Public School ninth graders became the first students to participate
in Dimensions Academy High School (DAHS). DAHS is a Science Technology Engineering and Math
(STEM) program for profoundly gifted high school students. These students take classes at Normandale
Community College the first two periods of the day and then return to Jefferson or Kennedy to take the rest
of their schedule.
First semester students took Environmental Geology and College Algebra and this semester they are taking
Chemistry and Pre-calculus. In addition to taking accelerated classes the students are engaged in activities
to prepare for college including taking STEM tours of the University of Minnesota, Carleton College, and
Macalester College.
For more information about DAHS you can go to: http://www.bloomington.k12.mn.us/DA-High-School
Counseling News
AP testing dates are May 4th - May 15th. If you have any questions, or need forms,
please contact Bill Batterman in the attendance office.
This is an important reminder for seniors and their guardians.
You are running out of time! The Counseling Office cannot send your final transcript to
anyone without your written permission.
You are not officially enrolled at a college or other post-secondary institution until a final
transcript stamped “graduate” is on file at your new school.
You cannot participate in college sports until the NCAA Clearinghouse has received your
final transcript and cleared you for play.
The Counseling Office has a specific form and procedures for requesting a final transcript. These forms are available in the Counseling Office and need to be completed
by June 4th. Shortly after graduation, your records leave Kennedy permanently and are
stored at the district offices.
If you have questions, please call Ms. McMurchie at 952-681-5024.
Check out Kennedy’s website for more information.

Class of “2015” & Bushard Photodesign
Class of 2015 your moment is soon at hand. Bushard Photodesign had the very distinct pleasure of taking
your professional portrait for the yearbook and we thank you and Kennedy High School for that privilege
and pleasure. A retouched image of each of you is available for review and/or purchase at Bushard.smugmug.com If you click on the "school" category you will be close. If you scroll down to "School Galleries"
you will see the dates I was at school to take pictures. Find your date and within each of those dates are
the images arranged alphabetically by name. If you click on your small image it will become the large one
on the right. To the right of the large image is a "buy" button, click on that and you will be prompted from
there. If you have any questions you can contact me by email ([email protected]) or call

Did you know?
Ø70% of teens killed on prom weekends are not wearing seatbelts.
ØThe dangers of graduation parties and after prom parties include but are not limited to drugs, alcohol, sex and driving while intoxicated.
ØEven though youth are less likely than adults to drive after drinking, the crash rates are substantially higher and therefore more deadly.
ØMotor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury in teenagers nationwide.
ØAlcohol is the deadliest and biggest drug problem among teens. It kills six times more people under 21 than all other illicit drugs combined.
Prom Safety
1. Host a party or ensure that your son or daughter is attending an adult supervised party where
alcohol and drugs are prohibited.
2. Find out who will be doing the driving. Will your son or daughter drive themselves or rent transportation?
3. If driving your son or daughter is driving, keep a list of names and phone numbers of each teen
rider, along with names and addresses of all the parents.
4. Limit the number of teen passengers per car.
5. Require each teen to buckle up.
6. Get a complete itinerary for the evening.
7. Insist that there shouldn’t be any changes made to the itinerary without parent approval.
8. Have your teen check-in with you throughout the evening.
9. Communicate with your teen about how he or she should handle a difficult situation. i.e. being offered a ride by someone who is intoxicated, being offered drugs or alcohol, being pressured to have
sex.
10.Consider designating someone to wait up until the teen arrives home safely.

Sponsor an Exchange Student - Youth for Understanding
Youth For Understanding (YFU), a nonprofit educational organization, is seeking families
and volunteers to host or mentor high school exchange students coming to Kennedy HS. Will
you consider welcoming a student? We are currently trying to find a home and volunteer support for several students, including Emilia, a 15 year old girl from Germany. Emily has many
interests, from setting up theater technical installations and playing guitar, to sports and the
debate team. Emily is all around an eager girl and likes being challenged. All you really need
to host is the ability and desire to share your home and open your heart to a new family member. Will you be the family to show Emilia that the American way of life goes beyond the
Hollywood movies? Please be in touch with YFU Field Director Anna Peters atapeters@yfu.
org or 651-646-8173. Families and volunteers are needed for temporary and year-long commitments. Learn why YFU, which serves families in sixty countries and was founded in 1951,

2015 Senior Class All Night Party
Senior parents are planning an exciting all night party for Kennedy’s
2015 graduates. All committee chairs have been filled but we need
volunteers to help with the detailed plans. The Senior Class Party
will be at KHS following the graduation ceremony on
June 1, 2015, from 9:00 pm – 5:00 am.
Senior and junior parent volunteers are needed to make this
year’s party a SUCCESS!
If you have special skills and/or like to get involved, please contact
Rhonda Rein at [email protected] or Karen VanSloun at
[email protected] and let them know how you can help. They will
connect you with the chairperson in charge.
We need volunteers to help with:
Gathering decorations and other party favors (Jan – May)
Light construction and painting for various themed activities
(Jan – May)
Decorating/setting up gyms and hallway (May 31st, June 1st)
Requesting donations for food and raffle items from various
businesses
(Jan – May - to avoid duplication of effort the
coordinators will let you know who has already been
approached and can provide tax donation forms for
businesses)
Providing security (June 1st – 2nd)
Picking up food donations (June 1st)
Cleaning up after the party (June 2nd)
Following is the link to SignUpGenius. Please note that activities and
shifts are not final as of April 21 but we needed to include the link
in the May Torch. Please revisit in May for available shifts. Your
participation is greatly needed and appreciated. Let’s make this
night a memorable event for our graduates.
