Kids In Bloom at University of Liverpool
Kids In Bloom at University of Liverpool is registered
for 100 children from 0-5 years. Each room is
designated to specific age groups in order to
maximise all vital aspects of development of each
individual child. This is in accordance with the
statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
framework.
Security
The nursery has excellent security; all external doors
are alarmed and if activated, security at the University
of Liverpool are automatically alerted. We have
recently installed high quality CCTV monitoring in
the nursery and an intercom system with a camera is
used in each room and the office to control access to
the premises.
Funded Places For 2, 3 And 4 Year Olds
We are able to offer funded places (meaning childcare
fees are reduced for up to 38 weeks per year) for some

2 year olds and all 3 and 4 year olds from the term
following their third birthday. For a maximum of 15
hours per week for 38 weeks or 11 hours per week for
52 weeks.
Outdoor Learning Area
Our outdoor area is accessible from every room and
includes large grassed areas, which our children love
to explore. Our newly installed large story telling
stage which has already proved very popular with the
children. In addition the children have a vegetable
patch which is used to develop their knowledge and
understanding of the world as they grow their own
vegetables which are harvested and used in our
kitchen to encourage healthy eating.
There is also ample space for encouraging physical
and imaginary play. Children have continuous access
to their Log Cabin, Outside Classroom, Mud Kitchen,
Water Play Area and Tyre Tunnels.

Nursery Manager - Stella Arends
Stella is a Director of Kids in Bloom
Nursery @ University of Liverpool.
Stella is also an Independent Early
Years and Training Consultant who
works with a variety of schools
and settings across the country.
She has over 20 years professional
experience in the sector, providing
high quality support and guidance
as a Early Years Consultant,
qualified Business Advisor and A1
NVQ Assessor.
Staff at Kids in Bloom @ University of Liverpool
All our staff are fully DBS checked, trained to the highest standard
and act in accordance with our staff code of conduct, which is
available for you to view at any time upon request.
All our staff are Qualified Level 3 or working towards, some staff are
working towards their Early Years Foundation Degree and all staff
attend courses to help develop knowledge and skills, e.g.
Safeguarding, Positive Behaviour and Working with Under 2’s.
We have a staff member who is a dance teacher and runs sessions
with the over twos children. Five staff have undertaken a course in
Infant Sign Language and children in pre-school have the opportunity
to take Spanish lessons.

Stella overseas all aspects of the
day to day running of the nursery
and will work closely with parents,
children,
practitioners
and
Directors of Kids in Bloom to
ensure the best possible care and
learning for all of our children.
OFSTED
Our regulatory body, OFSTED, states that all nurseries should have a
Level 3 qualified person in each room, here at the Kids in Bloom we
exceed this as one practitioner holds an Early Years Professional status
and four staff are qualified to degree level, fifteen staff hold their
Level 3 awards.
All staff benefit from Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
which includes in house training as well as accessing courses run by
the Local Authority, NDNA, 4Children etc.
The staff to child ratio is one member of staff to every three children
under the age of two, one member of staff to every four children
under the age of three and one member of staff for every eight
children over the age of three.

David started working with the
company in 2013 and has
attended numerous food safety
courses to ensure children are
receiving all their nutritional
needs in their daily meals.
Holiday Club
During every school holiday
we offer our holiday club
service between the hours of
8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to
Friday. Our staff carefully
plan a jam-packed day of
events and activities which in
the past have included plays
for
performance,
drama,
games, fund-raising events
and also outings to local
attractions e.g. Underwater
Street, Cinema, Farmer Ted’s,
Museums and Parks.
Water Fountains
Each room is provided with a
water fountain and the
children are encouraged to
drink plenty of fresh water
during the day, particularly in
the summer months.
Healthy Eating
Children are provided with a
healthy
breakfast,
midafternoon snack, tea and
drinks through the day
prepared in accordance with
the UK Governments healthy
eating policy. Parents are
expected to provide children
with a nutritious packed
lunch every day.

Birth to 12 months - Bluebell Room
During this period, babies development is very rapid and children gain
increasing control of all of their muscles. In accordance with this, the
Bluebell room has been designed in a spacious manner allowing children
to learn, explore and exercise in a safe and interesting environment that
changes in accordance to the children’s interests and stages of
development.
1 to 2 years - Caterpillar Room
This is a time when children can start to learn to relate to other children
and are encouraged to sit down at the table to eat together thus
encouraging their social and emotional development. The exciting and
friendly atmosphere in the Caterpillar Room encourages early physical,
communication and emotional skills in a structured but flexible manner
according to children's individual needs.
Parents/Carers and staff work closely together and discuss the progress of
each individual child on a daily basis. Staff also work in partnership with
parents whilst making the decision of when to move a child up to the next
room/age group.
2 to 3 years - Tulip Room
Children in this phase are always full of energy! Our team ensure the
children's day is full to the brim with carefully planned, stimulating and
exciting activities including sand and water play, exploration games,
reading in their own library, problem solving and of course lots of
energetic physical play and learning.
3 to 5 years - Sunflower Room
Social and emotional development is an important area for learning at this
stage. Children are encouraged to role - play and ask lots of questions to
develop their imagination and understanding of thoughts, feelings and
emotions. A lot of work goes into helping the children make a smooth
transition from nursery on to school.

Next stage of learning
It is vital for both you and your child that you feel
confident about your child being cared for in our
nursery. Children are very sensitive to their parents/
carers feelings, any uncertainties you feel will be
noticed by your child. This will make it more difficult
for you to feel comfortable whilst leaving them.
Part of building up confidence in our nursery is
getting to know the staff so that you can show your
child that you are friendly with them and trust them
to look after your child. Feel free to ask lots of
questions to familiarise yourself with our routines
and what we do and please let us know of any
concerns or worries you might have, however small
they may seem, they are important to us.

our nursery is bound to be rather an overwhelming
experience, particularly for children under three years
of age and for those who have not had experience of a
child-minder, playgroup or other similar forms of
outside care.
The length of time children take to settle varies, so
please don’t be worried if it takes longer than you
thought, we are here to help you every step of the
way.
Settling in is of crucial importance to their later
happiness in the nursery and extra care taken before
and during this period will minimise difficulties later
on. The settling-in period is a gradual introduction of
the child to Kids In Bloom, other children, activities,
daily programme and staff. It is also a gradual
withdrawal of your presence and these two aspects
Key Person System
To make the transition more comfortable for you and
your child, once you have accepted a place, your
child will be allocated a key person. This will be the
person that will really be ‘keyed-in’ to meet your
child’s individual needs, and to whom your child has
bonded with during settling in.
This will be the person you can contact if you have
any concerns or worries. They will take extra time
through the settling-in period to go through
everything you need to the know, the policies and
procedures, your child’s daily routine etc, to make
sure the practitioner has as much information about
the child at the beginning.
The key person will also plan for your child’s
learning around their interests and individual needs
and you will be asked to be a part of this planning.
You will be given a diary to fill in at home and then
share this with the key person so they can implement
it into their planning.
Your child will also have a Learning Journey, which
will be a portfolio of milestones your child has
achieved whilst they are with us. This is accessible to
you at all times. At the end of each day you will be
given detailed information about what your child has
learned, eaten, played with and liked throughout the
day. Kids in Bloom operates an ‘open door policy’ do feel free to drop in and see us and your child at
any time.
Parental Involvement
Parents and carers are the first educators of their
young children and the aim of Kids In Bloom is to
support their essential work.
We make all parents aware of the company’s policies
and procedures and encourage them to play an active
part in their child’s progress. We involve parents in
shared record keeping about their own child, either
formally or informally.
We ensure all parents are informed about any
meetings, conferences, workshops, events and
training. We also welcome contributions from
parents, whatever form they may take and encourage

Introduction To Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Here at Kids In Bloom we believe every child
deserves the best possible start in life. A child’s
experience in the early years has a major impact on
their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy
childhood is vital in providing the foundation for
children to make the most of their abilities and
talents as they grow up. When parents choose to use
early years services they want to know that the
provision will keep their children safe and help
them thrive. The Early Years Foundation Stage
(EYFS) is the framework that provides that
assurance.
•A secure foundation through learning and
development opportunities which are planned
around the needs and interests of each individual
child and are assessed and reviewed regularly;
•Setting the standards for the learning,
development and care young children should
experience when they are attending a setting
outside of their family home.
•Providing equality of opportunity and antidiscriminatory practice and ensuring that every
child is include and supported and not
disadvantaged because of ethnicity, culture or
religion, home language, learning difficulties or
disabilities, gender or ability.
•Creating the framework for partnership working
between parents and professionals and between all
the settings that the child attends.
•Improving quality and consistency in the early
years sector through a universal set of standards
which apply to all settings, including schools.
This is a very important stage as it helps your child
get ready for school as well as preparing them for
their future learning and successes. From when
your child is born up until the age of 5, their early
years experience should be happy, active, exciting,
fun and secure whilst also developing their care and
learning needs. There are seven areas of learning
which guide professionals engagement with your
child as they learn new skills and knowledge. The
EYFS seeks to provide:
