Julia Marie (Eveleth) Young
Julia Marie Eveleth was born May 2, 1929, at
Sturgis, SD, to Minnie (Steffes) and A.C. (Cobe)
Eveleth. She attended Clough School located
north of Cobes Corner for one and a half years
before moving into Sturgis with her mom and
brother. She finished her grade school education
and graduated in 1948 from St. Martin’s.
Julia earned a teaching certificate from Black
Hills Teachers College and taught two years.
While teaching at the Lucerne School north of Stoneville, she met Paul
Young and they were married on September 2, 1950, in Rapid City at the
Old Cathedral Church. They made their home on the ranch until 1988,
when they retired and moved into Sturgis. To this
union, five children were born. Paul passed away
in July, 2007, and Julia moved to Edgewood Vista
Assisted Living in Spearfish in August, 2007. She
resided there until she moved to Fountain Springs
Health Care in Rapid City in December, 2010.
Julia passed away on April 29, 2015, at Fountain
Springs.
Julia was a devoted lifelong member of the
Catholic Church in Red Owl and Sturgis. She was
a member of the Stoneville Steadies Extension
Club for 35 years and the Thursday A’s for two years, a member of
Cowbelles for 10 years, a 4-H leader, a member of the VFW, the Hospital
Auxiliary, the Birthday Club, the Sturgis Senior Citizen’s Center, the Altar
Society and St. Francis Circle. Throughout most of her life, she had many
Round Robin pen pals. She advanced from using a manual typewriter to an
electric typewriter with memory to using the
computer to write the letters. She continued
to use the computer in her room at the
nursing home to write emails and play
games on until just a couple years ago.
Even though Julia had MS for most of her
adult life, she never complained or let it
hold her back. Through it all, she raised her
family, took care of her home, and enjoyed
the many years spent with Paul, her brothers
and their wives, and her many dear friends.
We were blessed.
Julia is survived by her children, Shirley
(Steve) Larson of Rapid City, Dale Young of
Stoneville, Carol (Tom) Olesen of Spanaway,
WA, and Nina (Luke) Steinmetz of Hot
Springs; sister-in-law, Wanna Young of
Sturgis; six grandchildren, Jeff Larson, Zac
Olesen, Michelle Larson Lund, Colter
Steinmetz, Clayton Steinmetz, and Jessica
Steinmetz; three great-grandchildren, Sophia,
Gianna, and Cooper; and a large beloved
extended family and close friends.
Julia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; her infant
son, William Francis in 1951; her grandson, Travis Olesen in 2000; and her
brothers and their wives, Bernard and Helen Eveleth and Francis and Alice
Eveleth. Also preceding Julia were her brother-in-law, Robert Young; and
her sister-in-law and husband, Violet and Russ Speed.
A memorial has been established to the restoration of the St. Martin’s
Chapel.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.kinkadefunerals.com.
God saw she was getting tired and a cure was not to be
So He put His arms around her and whispered “come to Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched her suffer and saw her fade away
Although we loved her dearly We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating Hardworking hands to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us He takes the very best.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those
Who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, And the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen
