GUIDELINES: THEATRE PROGRAMME 1. INVITATION We hereby invite all producers to submit proposals for possible inclusion in the 2016 programme of the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK). In this document we provide guidelines for the specific theatre content that we require for 2016. Please submit your proposal as soon as possible, but no later than 31 July 2015. 2. 2016 FESTIVAL DATES We’re still deciding on the final KKNK dates for 2016, but you can accept that the festival dates will include the Easter weekend (Friday, 25 March to Monday, 28 March) in full. The festival dates will also fall within the national school holidays (Friday, 18 March to Tuesday, 5 April). 3. SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL ONLINE Submit your proposal online, via www.kknk.co.za. If you need any assistance with the online submission, contact Linda Marques at 044 203 8600 or [email protected]. All submissions will be acknowledged by email within a week. If you do not receive a confirmation email, you can accept that we have not received the submission and contact our office. 4. AUDIENCES The preferences of our audiences are of utmost importance to us. We distinguish between the following audiences, while accepting that there may be overlaps between these groups: a. The Theatre audience primarily comes to the KKNK to see productions. They are interested in a variety of genres including drama, comedy, contemporary music, musical theatre, classical music, literary works and talks. They travel to the KKKNK, mostly from the Cape, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, with a group of friends rather than with a family group, are more females than males, are in the higher LSM groups, are of various ages and speak mostly Afrikaans. b. The Rivierbuurt audience primarily comes to the KKNK to visit the Rivierbuurt’s enclosed area with its markets, music stages, tasting experiences and shopping paradise. They are mostly from the immediate surrounds and visit the KKNK in family groups, rather than with a group of friends. They are Afrikaans and enjoy a variety of music genres. 5. CONTRACT TYPES Kunste Onbeperk, the company that presents the KKNK, will conclude one of the following contracts with successful applicants. a. Fee basis: Kunste Onbeperk acts as executive producer, carries the turnover of the production and accepts responsibility for all of the runs that the production will have. In return for its investment Kunste Onbeperk expects to participate in the creative process. b. Partnership basis: Kunste Onbeperk negotiates a share of the turnover of the production, which is carried by an independent producer. c. Box Office basis: Kunste Onbeperk shares in the income of the production’s run at the KKNK, but has no responsibility for the creation of the production. 6. SPECIFIC PROGRAMMING REQUIRED It is important to us to give all producers the opportunity to submit proposals and this is therefore an open call to the arts industry. We are interested in the following specific programming: a. Site specific theatre is a distinctive feature of the KKNK and Kunste Onbeperk wants to invest in a work where a specific place (preferably within a radius of 5km of the festival centre) is an integral part of the production. b. Afrikaans drama and comedy (whether new, translated, dusted off or dressed up) is a substantial part of the KKNK’s programme. A variety of productions will be accepted to create a healthy balance between niche and popular offerings. To make the most of the available venues, preference will be given to productions that are between 60 min and 80 min. c. Kunste Onbeperk would like to invest in a farce or two, whether it is a translation of an international piece or an Afrikaans farce that has been revamped. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. 7. Kunste Onbeperk would like to invest in a pantomime: preferably a production that includes familiar South African characters (as was the case with Liewe Heksie this year). Stand-up comedy in Afrikaans and English will be accommodated. A focussed offering of classical music recitals with unique and accessible content will be accepted. These recitals are generally presented in church buildings. Contemporary music is an important element of the KKNK’s programme. Kunste Onbeperk invests in well-rounded, carefully considered productions (no CD launches please), where music styles and artists are combined in innovative ways. Programmes are compiled in a variety of venues, which range from the Musiekplaas (5,500 seats in the openair), the Civic Centre (675 seats in auditorium style) to Die Boer Restaurant (150 seats) and the Neelsie Theatre (100 seats). Although a small component of the programme, KKNK welcomes proposals where literature is packaged creatively in theatre or music productions. Storytelling is an important part of the KKNK’s literature offering. Dance is also a small component of the KKNK programme. One or two productions (possibly by the same company) that make dance accessible to a broader (and younger) audience will be considered. SEPERATE APPLICATION PROCESSES a.
