a human previously. During one of their excursions they the step into the forbidden zone. They realize the island is much more interesting — and densely
populated — then they could imagine…
“The Dolphin’s Children” is an adventure story but is is not just that. This is a
book about growing up, making new friends, about this moment in every person’s life where he or she
has to take responsibility for what is happening in the outside world — for otherwise this world will disappear forever.

The Whale Goes North
7+ TALES – ECOLOGY – TRAVELLING – NORDIC NATURE – FINDING YOUR
PURPOSE
140х210 mm
ISBN 978-5-00083-141-0
The whale is swimming across the ocean and on its back is a mysterious animal
called mamoru. Mamoru has to find the one and only island that belongs to him
and become its guardian. He is so small and clumsy, defenceless against the icy,
mighty ocean — can he even hear the call of the island which is his destiny?...
Anastasia Strokina’s tale “The Whale Goes North” is about the Ocean, the little
guardian of the Island, the birds and the animals, the Aleut people who inhabit those strange lands where the mushrooms are so delicious but trees are absent. It feels like the stories behind the “Whale” are the Aleut folk tales. In truth
the author masterfully invents the virtually non-existent Aleut myths and legends afresh. This romantic, many-layered tale is full of wisdom. The child will
love the interesting plot and the weird and wonderful heroes. The school kid
will see more in this book: the idea of destiny, self-belief, love and faithfulness.
Even the parent will find something to take away from this captivating read.
Anastasia Strokina was born far north and has recently moved to Moscow,
where she translates English poetry, studies languages, plays cello and writes
books for children and adults.

11+ SCHOOL – FRIENDSHIP – VANDALISM AND ITS CONSEQUENCES –
FANTASTIC FICTION
“The May(a) Calendar” by Victoria Lederman is the teen-age novel at its oldfashioned, classical best. There is everything in it: adventures, psychological
insights, the eternal questions and the deep yearning for true friendship. It is
a genuine page-turner. Who would would have thought that three very different schoolchildren will be united by a common problem: one day they simply
start doing backwards in time. There’s no tomorrow for them — only yesterday.
The three are not heroes, they are normal teens who don’t even like each other
much. Now they will have to put all this aside and play as a team — otherwise
they will become babies again and then disappear completely.
Victoria Lederman teaches English and French and loves traveling. “The Maya
Calendar” is her prize-winning first book. Anastassia Maleiko

‘‘Today is October, 2nd. We are walking past an opera theatre with harps on the
roof. It is sunny and windy. Mum is wearing a checkered coat and a red beret.
In her hand she is clutching a paper bag with cookies, the bag makes a pleasant rustling noise and smells of vanilla. We have just been to a deli where mum
spent a long time choosing something especially delicious. She is carrying this
‘something’ to the artist. You see, my mother loves an artist. Maybe she loves
him even more than me. She doesn’t buy vanilla cookies for me, that’s for sure.
Frankly speaking, I can’t tell you why I don’t like the artist. Actually, he is handsome and jolly. Mum is always joking and jumping with laughter when she is
with him. Maybe I am just jealous – she used to be joking with me. We used to
go to the concerts and the movies together. On Sundays we would go to a park
with sandwiches and tea in a thermos, lying on the grass until the sun was
down, chatting and telling stories. Now there is this artist…’’
Lina will have to come to the opening of Igor’s exhibition.
Igor is the artist her mother is in love with, and Lina
herself helped him choose the paintings for the exhibition.
Who knows what will happen next?

‘Open Windows’
‘This computer of yours has sucked you in up to your neck!’ Kostya’s mum sighs as they
sit down to dinner. Her son is spending his time on gaming websites because he has
some real friends there, as opposed to his school. The mother is determined to distract
him from his daily routines and takes Kostya and his sister to their country house. And
then it turns out that one of Kostya’s online friends lives in this very village! What will
their meeting look like?
‘The Sirocco Wind Dance’
‘Katya I love you’ is written all across the shed where spades and brooms are kept. It is a
special kind of paint, glowing in the dark. The letters are all skewed at different angles and
the line is sloping down towards the ground. In the beginning, where the letters are still
high above the earth, under the word ‘Katya’, there is an addition – ‘from class 7B’. Class
7B can see these words through the windows during maths, physics and English lessons.
Each time they look to make sure that the words are still there. The three Katyas in the
class are busy guessing which one of them this message is addressed to. And who sent it?
‘Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay’
Natasha is keen to help everybody – a stray kitten, a homeless person or wealthy but not very happy neighbours.
What she is really concerned about is not poverty but lack of understanding from people around her. She dreams of
growing up and driving her mother and brother away from the small town they live in.

Dasha lives in a small town but wants to move to a metropolis and become
a famous writer. She doesn’t lose time: she writes novels on popular themes —
vampires and love. To make her novel exceptional, Dasha decides to involve
some Komi folklore characters. But suddenly one of the characters — Per-hero — appears in front of
Dasha and asks her for help. Many years ago people began to leave the land of Komi, and the gods followed them, and now the oldest ghosts forgot their homes. Once rich land empties, mythological world
of the ancestors rapidly vanishes, dwindles to the size of fables and tales... How to save the world? How
to beat the Void? This is essential for Dasha and her companions — mythical characters and aliens who
came to Earth with a scientific purpose.

On his grandgrandson’s request, a patriarch of a noisy family, boiling around
barbecues, swimming and other summer joys, recalls the most fearful period of his childhood — winter of 1942... For three months and a half Dimka was wandering in the forest in mud and snow. He escorted scared to
death policemen, bartered grenades for stew from Nazi soldiers, desperately wanted to get warm and eat well, but more than all that he wanted to
kill his first German. He was patronized by Sanych, an insolent guy, blabbermouth and a soldier of God, awarded a medal, enchanted by a gypsy
woman from bullets and snapshots. Sanych was afraid three things only:
betrayal, a peatbog beast from old legends and a strict girl called Alevtina.
Based on some facts from the biography of a real partisan, Leonid Golikov,
the book enriches the story with the fantastic elements, creates its own reality and offers us a heartbreaking story of the teenagers involved in a war,
a view of a senselessness of war, absurdity, utter horror and infinite variety
of life. The war in which the weakest have to become the strongest ones.
Eduard Verkin was born in 1975 in Vorkuta. Graduated from historical faculty of the Syktyvkar
State University and Courses in Literature in the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow. He
taught history. He is an author of numerous books for children and teenagers. He is a recipient

KompasGuide Publishing House discovers talented authors, creating a collection of wonderfully designed award-winning books. Since its establishment in 2009 KompasGuide has
brought many exceptional children’s and young adults’ book projects to the Russian market.
We like to publish those books that speak about the most complicated subjects in an honest
and interesting way. Our books will help young readers learn about the life of their peers
in different parts of the world. We strongly believe that a pen is stronger than a sword;
therefore, we hope that our books can help to destroy the walls of misunderstanding.
Our first book was published in November 2009. We have since published more than 170 titles. Our authors include Michael Ende, Wolf Erlbruch, Christine Nöstlinger, Ulf Stark, Stefan Casta, Jutta Bauer, Andreas Steinhöfel, Beate Teresa Hanika, Ketil Bjørnstad, Timothée de Fombelle, Bernard Friot, and many others.
