Memoral wall
It is believed that the name ‘Kulin’ may have come from the
Aboriginal Nyoongar word “koorl-iny” which means coming or
going. This is because people moved through the area and
water was available. Kulin is also on what Aboriginal people call a
‘dreaming trail’ and people travelled through this area particularly
when large meetings were being held in the Eastern Wheatbelt.

History in a Flash

The first inhabitants of
years ago – the South West corner of
present day: Western Australia were
the Aboriginal Noongar
people. Noongar people had
a strong relationship with the
natural environment, which
continues today. 1870’s: Sandalwood cutters move
through the region seeking
the finest stands of sweet
smelling sandalwood for the
East and South-East Asian
market.
Late 1890’s: Cutters down their tools
and head further inland to
seek their fortune on the
Goldfields.
Early 1900’s: Pastoralists begin to take
grazing leases in the Kulin
area. Fresh water is found
at Kulin Rock Soak, north of
Kulin and attracts the first
settlement to the area.

B3 Jitarning
A very little town with lots of character and a
fabulous old stone building which was originally
built as a pub in 1918 but used as a hostel (now
a private residence). Jitarning is situated 22km
south east from Kulin and was proclaimed a town
in 1917.
A4Dudinin
This close knit rural community prides itself on
being friendly, positive and proactive. Dudinin is
situated 37 kilometers south east of Kulin on the
Number 2 Rabbit Proof Fence Road. The name
Dudinin is believed to have Aboriginal origins
which means ‘place of much water’.
K3 Holt Rock
(Facilities are in Varley)
Find yourself on the edge of the Great Western
Woodlands, the largest remaining intact temperate
or ‘Mediterranean’ woodland in the world. Holt
Rock township has very minimal facilities for
visitors however, 17kms south of Holt Rock is
Varley, located in the Shire of Lake Grace.

Tin Horse Tourist Route
The fabulous 120 kilometre self-drive trail takes you along sealed
roads to Wave Rock via Kulin and the famous Tin Horse Highway and
offers an array of unique sights and experiences along the way.

Dubbed a ‘quirky open-air gallery’, this famous collection of clever
community art provides a seriously entertaining drive and is fast
becoming a must see for travellers across Australia.

The tin horses on the western side of Kulin town provide a fun
introduction to the Bush Races and the Tin Horse Highway.

picturesque landform displays a contrast of vibrant orange clays
against spectacular white cliffs and gullies.

Centre. The trail links the towns of Quairading, Bruce Rock,

offers a range of unique experiences across the region.

Farming
For a safe and enjoyable trip please consider the
following travel tips and information. Your safety is
our concern but it is your responsibility.
Broad acre dry land farming is the backbone of the
Kulin Region. Growing of crops is the most popular
activity with wheat, barley, canola, lupins and field
peas all produced in the Kulin region.

Be Prepared
Visitor Centres, some petrol stations and food
outlets are open limited hours so phone ahead.
Be Safe
• Beware of trucks and farming machinery on roads.
• Check road conditions before departure. Rain
can make some roads impassable.
• In event of a breakdown in a remote location,
remain with your vehicle.
• Carry plenty of drinking water. Granite outcrops
and lakes do not guarantee water and if there,
the quality of the water cannot be assured.
• Always carry a well-stocked first aid kit.
• Take care at all railway crossings. Not all
crossings have flashing lights.
• Beware of livestock and wildlife on roads.
• In warmer months beware of snakes.
Be Respectful
• When bushwalking or visiting Nature Reserves
do not disturb wildlife, remove plants, rocks or
artefacts.
• Use visitor facilities provided and keep to
existing tracks.
• When visiting nature reserves, leave pets at home.
• Dispose of your rubbish properly.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phone coverage in the Kulin Shire may be
limited. Telstra is the only service provider. Other
providers have almost no coverage.
Fires
Fires are prohibited in summer months. During the
other warmer months, make sure you obtain fire
danger information and only light fires when safe,
permitted and in designated areas.
Noongar Seasons
The six-season calendar is extremely important to
Aboriginal Noongar people. It is a guide to what
nature is doing at every stage of the year, as well
as understanding respect for the land in relation to
plant and animal fertility cycles and land and animal
preservation.

1910’s: The belt of salt pans around
Jilakin Lake is recognized as
good grazing land and early
farming settlers take up land
around the lake and Jilakin
Rock.
1915: The railway from Narrogin is
connected to Kulin.
1919: The Kulin Hotel opens after
a controversial beginning
and Royal Commission
surrounding its hotel license.
1928: The Kulin Memorial Hall is
constructed and becomes
a hub for social events and
administration.
1937: The CWA building foundation
stone is laid by Mrs. Casey
1938: Construction of Butlers
Garage is completed

1946: Kulin Railway Station is built
1995: Kulin hosts its first annual
