Introduction
Summer School for Effective Leadership 2015: Speak Like a Leader (the ‘School’) is a collaboration between
Leadership 21 of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Center for Language Education, and the
Entrepreneurship Center of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with the aims:
To enhance the leadership skills of participants in the area of entrepreneurship and public speaking;
To allow youth leaders to learn from one another, and encourage cultural exchanges between local,
Mainland and overseas students;
To demonstrate to participants how public speaking skills can be used by entrepreneurs to pitch their
ideas and by leaders to advocate for social innovation; and
To allow outstanding student leaders from secondary schools to serve and understand the local
community.
Study Theme
Most people have thought about changing the world in some way. Most people have probably come up with
great ideas. The question is: what tool do you need to acquire in order to realise that change? Persistence?
Creativity? These are all qualities of successful leaders, but to become a real entrepreneur or changemaker,
nothing is more important than the ability to effectively communicate your ideas to other people, and the ability
to convince people to follow you. To ensure that you, as one of tomorrow’s leaders, are equipped with this
competence, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups is very pleased to have organised the Summer School
for Effective Leadership – Speak Like a Leader.
Features of the School
Through intensive and all-round on-campus training, the School will provide participants with:
An opportunity to learn from distinguished changemakers, entrepreneurs and internationally
renowned public speakers/speechwriters
Sharing by young entrepreneurs on their first-hand startup experience
Professional training by University language instructors in advanced English public speaking skills
A global elite exchange platform for top students in social innovation and English public speaking
from different regions
A valuable experience of studying in a world-class university with a certificate issued by the
Federation and the University

Full attendance is mandatory for the 6-day-5-night
programme. Shared-room accommodation in the
University dormitory is provided.

S.3 – S.6 student leaders, or equivalent, in the

Certificates
Upon fulfilment of all course requirements, participants
will be awarded a Certificate of Completion issued
jointly by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups
and The Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology.

Grants and Scholarships
Grants:
Participants in financial need may apply for partial or
full fee waiver following nomination by local secondary
school teachers.
Outstanding Student Scholarships:
Any local, Mainland or overseas students with
outstanding records are welcome to apply following
nomination by school teachers.
