31 July Summer School for Effective Leadership AN OVERTURE TO GLOBAL LEADERSHIP Supported by : Supporting Media : 2015 at HKU to 8 Aug Introduction Summer School for Effective Leadership 2015: An Overture to Global Leadership (the ‘School’), now in its eighth year, is a collaboration between Leadership 21, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and the General Education Unit, The University of Hong Kong with the aims: To nurture youth leaders with solid fundamental knowledge and intensive leadership skills; To foster all-round training to strengthen their critical thinking and reasoning skills, interpersonal skills, cognitive skills and ability to analyse and solve problems; To reinforce their willingness to serve the community; and To further develop a global perspective and promote intercultural awareness amongst participants. Study Theme From eradication of poverty in the Millennium Development Goals, the world is moving on towards the higher goal of ‘Leave No One Behind’ in the post-2015 Development Agenda – ensuring that no person is denied basic economic opportunities and human rights. As a highly developed city, Hong Kong has more multimillionaires than any other city in the world. However, it also tops the chart among developed regions with a Gini Coefficient of 0.537 in 2012. On the other hand, the cost of living in Hong Kong continues to increase, making it one of the ten most expensive cities to live in, according to a recent study by The Economist Intelligence Unit. Hong Kong's poverty issue becomes increasingly visible. As future leaders, it is important for today’s youth to investigate the issue and recommend possible solutions to the problem. Therefore, we have adopted ‘Poverty and Social Equity’ as the study theme this year. Features of the School Through intensive on-campus and off-campus training, the School will provide participants with: An opportunity to learn from distinguished leaders and international experts on the poverty issue A first-hand experience into the lives of the poor and exposure to real problems in society A global elite exchange platform for outstanding students in social participation from different regions A place where youth talents join together and become changemakers to advocate for the underprivileged A valuable campus experience in a world-class university with a certificate issued by the Federation and the University Pov An early glance of university life for advanced learners and opportunities for networking with university members Global Youth Talents Renowned guest speakers World-class university experience Global elite exchange platform Changes to Global Societies Recollections of Past Participants Young leaders who participated in the School in previous years recollect their fruitful experiences as follows: Yuki YUE, International School of Beijing (Mainland China) (2013 participant) Kanika BALI , The International School Bangalore (2011 participant) BBA at The University of Hong Kong The School provided the greatest opportunity to enhance whole-person development, way beyond just gaining leadership abilities.
