Class Descriptions 2015-16 - The Learning and Fun Club

Class Descriptions
2015-2016 Academic Year
LAF Club Classes will be held at Grace Fellowship Church in Shrewsbury on Thursdays from
9:00am-3:20pm. We will have offerings for students in grades K-12. We will have three
sessions, two 10 weeks and one 8 weeks long. Please see below for exact dates:
Fall Session:
Sept 17 to Nov 19 (Make-up: Dec 3rd)
Winter Session: Jan 7th to Mar 10th (Make-up dates: Mar 17th & 24th)
Spring Session: Mar 31 to May 19th (Make-up: May 26th)
The church has been very gracious to provide us space for a full day of classes each week during
our 28 weeks in session next year. While they do not expect that cancellations by Grace
Fellowship will occur, they have reserved the right to cancel our classes on a particular day if a
ministry event comes up that would require use of the entire facility. They will provide a two
week notice if a cancellation is needed in order to meet the overall facility needs of the church. If
this happens, we will use a make-up day to reschedule the classes missed.
Each student who registers for classes will be required to pay a one time enrollment fee of $35
per student, per year. This fee is due at the time of registration and is non-refundable even if
you decide to withdraw your student from classes. This fee is in addition to any class and
materials fees required by the instructors. This fee will cover various administrative expenses,
such as liability insurance costs, registration system fees, and website hosting fees, etc. Please
see individual class descriptions for a list of class and materials fees required for each course.
These fees vary based on instructor and materials involved.
We will be switching over to a new registration system before registration officially begins.
HSsegue has decided to begin charging each person to use their system from June 1st on, and
since the system has been difficult for most people to maneuver and understand, I thought this
would be a good time to try something new. The new system is easier to use and should make
registering for classes or events much nicer. It will require each family to create an account and
enter all their information one time and then you will be set for all future registrations. Payments
will be processed via credit or debit cards instead of Paypal, so hopefully that will make things
easier for everyone as well! You will access the site via our web address, www.lafclub.com,
which should be operational soon!
Please see below for our list of class descriptions and instructor biographies:
9:00-9:50 am - 1st Period Classes
Science (K-2nd Grades):
Our goal is to help your K-2nd grade students develop a genuine understanding of scientific
concepts from a Christian perspective. Each week your child will introduced to a specific topic
by participating in engaging, hands-on science experiments and activities. Through this style of

Foundations of Art (7th-9th Grades):
The objectives of this course are:





To give the young artist a comprehensive understanding of the creative visual process.
The class will include invention, imagination, and conceptualization.
To identify and use the Principles of Design in a variety of media so the student can
select, after a wide choice of experiences, the materials they are most comfortable using.
To identify and use the Elements of Art including color, primarily but not exclusively
with dry media, leading to some fundamentals of painting.
To combine and apply observation and rendering techniques in order to be able to
approach any subject matter in nature or man-made.
To apply and develop creative skills that result in desired visual compositions.
Mr. Zaldivar’s art classes will be based on art programs that have been used for years. The core
objectives are used to develop very comprehensive curriculums. The approach is unique because
it is not project based. The entire creative process drives the students thinking and artistic
expression.
Instructor: Ronald Zaldivar
Enrollment: Minimum 3 students and Maximum 15 students
Class Time: 9:00-9:50am (1st period)
Materials Fee: $11 per student, per year
Supplies: Approximately $20 per session—see below for details
Cost: $6.00 per student, per class
($60 for a 10 week session and $48 for an 8 week session)

class each week. The instructor will let everyone know what is needed during the open
house & during the first class. Additional materials may be required as the students’ move
through various skills throughout the school year. Students should be expected to spend
approximately $20 per session on art supplies to use in class and to build up their collection
(which they will be able to keep and use once the class ends). Some creative students may
already possess some of the required supplies. If they do not, the instructor will provide
suggestions on where to find supplies at the best price, as well as encourage the use of
coupons and sale prices at various art/craft supply stores, such as Michael’s, AC Moore, etc.
The students informed visits to the art/craft store is part of the learning experience. The
majority of painting supplies will not be needed until after Christmas (great ideas for gift
items).
Instructor Biography: Ronald Zaldivar
Mr. Zaldivar was born and raised in Baltimore County. He graduated from county schools and

Writing (8th-12th Grades):
Please note: This class is being offered twice (at 9am and at 10am) to try to accommodate as
many students as possible while keeping the class sizes small because of the heavy emphasis on
sharing. You only need to register for one time slot. The material presented will be exactly the
same in each class. You may register for each session independently or choose to take the
class for the whole year.
Session One (10 weeks)--The Essay
The essay is the single most important writing skill you need for college. In this class, we will
cover many different kinds of essays including Process, Descriptive, Definition, Review,
Classification, Comparison, Narrative, and Persuasive essays. We will cover good sentence and
paragraph organization, how to develop a sound thesis, and how to effectively support a thesis. In
order to be an excellent writer, you need to think about audience. In this class, audience is the
main attraction! Much of the class time is spent sharing your work with your classmates.
Although it may feel strange or scary at first, you will come to anticipate and appreciate reading
your work aloud—it gives purpose to your ideas and the work you have done to express them in
written form. This class will not cover grammar, punctuation, or spelling.
Session Two (10 weeks): Creative Writing
Just as with the Essay class, this writing class will use class time to share written work. I will
offer comments after each person reads his or her work and other students will be encouraged to
say what they like about the piece. This is not a group critique class, rather it is a place for you to
share your creative work and to express your appreciation of your classmates’ work. We will
explore all kinds of creative writing including poetry, funny fairy tales, mimic the masters, tall
tales, shared characters, empathy stories, and many more constructs. We will cover literary
devices like alliteration, personification, flashback, foreshadowing, hyperbole, deus ex machina,
motif, simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, point of view, and tone. We will also explore dialogue,
character development, descriptive detail, setting, flat characters, and so much more!
Session 3 (8 weeks)--The Research Paper
This class will take you through the process of creating a well-designed, well-written research
paper. We will cover how to pick a research topic, develop a thesis, do effective research, and
find credible online sources. We will also discuss drafting, revising, editing, citation, and
proofreading. You will select one of two kinds of research papers to write using a topic of your
own choosing: The Argumentative research paper, where you defend, with extensive supportive
research, your position on a controversial subject; or, the Analytical research paper, where you
use research to explore and evaluate your topic. You will be expected to share with the class all
steps of your research during the eight weeks. This will help keep you on track and reinforce the
steps necessary to produce a sound piece of research writing.

Instructor Biography: Warkenda Williams-Casey
Warkenda believes that ANYONE and EVERYONE can knit and it is her love of the art that she
wishes to pass on to others. There are many benefits to knitting other than producing a beautiful
new object from what seems to be nothing more than string and sticks. Knitting has a meditative
effect. It is known to be a way of stress reduction and relaxation. It helps to improve memory
and cognitive function. It improves problem solving skills and creates a since of well-being and
is a natural mood enhancer which helps with chronic pain, depression and even PTSD. Knitting
has been used in classrooms and homes across the world and throughout time as a way to reset
the brain to prepare the younger mind for learning new material, and as a way to calm the mind
when it becomes too busy. Knitting does much more than just produce beautiful works of art, it
is a creative and fun way to reset and calm one’s brain and connect with the world and others.
Warkenda was introduced to the fiber arts at a young age, yet never knitted anything until she was
an adult. Her Father and mother both were fiber artists, with her mother primarily crocheting and
her father knitting and designing knit wear for the family as well as for others. Unfortunately,
when she asked her parents to show her the secret of the magical art of creating fabric from what
seemed to be nothing, she was told that she was not smart enough to learn to knit with any true
skill or finesse. This was something she took to be truth until she started teaching at Baltimore
School of the Arts. Teachers in her department often got together once a week for a time to relax,
talk about the trials in their lives and knit. She attended the first meeting without sticks or fiber of
any kind and was given her first pair of sticks and fiber and has never put them down since. It
has become one of her missions to share the joy of knitting and creating with simple sticks and
string with others in her life. It is through creating and laughter that one can build friendships,
ease tears, calm spirits and connect.
Warkenda has been knitting for over 18 years now and has sold her creations and designs in
various shops around town as well as wearing them herself and giving them to others under the
brand name “MamaBearKnitting". She writes about her knitting creations, projects, and general
musings about the fiber arts on mamabearknitting.wordpress.com where she often talks about her
three Baby Bears and the Papa Bear she married and with whom she resides in York, PA.

To identify and apply a variety of painterly materials and techniques that may develop
into personal style and expressive visual statements.
Class Time: 10:00-10:50am (2nd period)
Materials Fee: $11 per student, per year
Supplies: Approximately $30 per session—see below for details
Cost: $6.00 per student, per class
($60 for a 10 week session and $48 for an 8 week session)
Students will be expected to bring their own art supplies with them to class each week. The
instructor will let everyone know what is needed during the open house & during the first
class. Additional materials may be required as the students’ move through various skills
throughout the school year. Students should be expected to spend approximately $30 per
session on art supplies to use in class and to build up their collection (which they will be able
to use once the class ends). Some creative students may already possess some of the
required supplies. If they do not, the instructor will provide suggestions on where to find
supplies at the best price, as well as encourage the use of coupons and sale prices at various
art/craft supply stores, such as Michael’s, AC Moore, etc. The students informed visits to
the art/craft store is part of the learning experience. The majority of painting supplies will
not be needed until after Christmas (great ideas for gift items).
Instructor Biography: Ronald Zaldivar
Mr. Zaldivar was born and raised in Baltimore County. He graduated from county schools and
went on to do undergraduate studies at Maryland Institute College of Art, one of the top two
private art schools in the nation. With full state accreditation he began his teaching career at
Woodlawn High School where he became Art Department Chairperson. During his tenure at
Woodlawn, the Zaldivar family moved to New Freedom. To cut a very long commute to a 12
mile drive he moved to Hereford High as Department Chair. He also gave private art lessons and
for many years taught Adult Night Classes. Ron completed his Masters work at the Institute,
Loyola and Towson.
One of his recognized strengths is designing and writing curriculum which lead to several
summers’ worth of work and a course to introduce a seminar curriculum through the University
of Maryland.
After 37 years Ron retired but was called back to Hereford to substitute full time for a friend
that was hospitalized. The past five years he has kept his hand on the paint pallet by teaching
Watercolor Painting at the South Central York Co. Senior Center.

Every student loves a good story. All of us learn by "doing." Combining these 2 elements, we will
learn about the early explorers and life in colonial America. Expect to create maps to travel the
world, make cornhusk dolls, dip candles, write with a quill pen & more. Johnny cakes, anyone?
Come touch and taste history!
This is a two-part session. When you register, you are signing up for both session 1 & 2.
Session 3 may be taken independently if desired.

Null and her husband, Ed, have 5 grown children. She enjoys biking, kayaking, quilting and
decorating gourd birdhouses.
Writing (8th-12th Grades):
Please note: This class is being offered twice (at 9am and at 10am) to try to accommodate
as many students as possible while keeping the class sizes small because of the heavy
emphasis on sharing. You only need to register for one time slot. The material presented
will be exactly the same in each class.
This will help keep you on track and reinforce the
steps necessary to produce a sound piece of research writing.

music or just knowing more about music to be able to better appreciate art and creativity.
In this course, participants will learn the following skills:
‐ Meter and Time Signatures
‐ Basic Pitch and Tone language
‐ Tempo difference and terms

11:00-11:50am – 3rd Period Classes
Conversational Spanish “Conversaciones en Español” (6th – 12th grades):
This course will focus in developing skills to be able to start and to build conversations in
Spanish. Basic level of Spanish is desired but not required. There will be some emphasis on
writing and reading skills as well. We will be using tools “on-line” to enrich the learning
experience and expand vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to use materials on-line at home
like www.livinglanguage.com to practice and for enrichment. We will also learn through classic,
traditional Spanish songs and book discussion. A book (written solely in Spanish) will be selected
for this course. Students will need to read the book at home each week and be able to discuss
what they’ve read with the instructor and other students. This will require the student to do some
research and planning at home to be able to decipher what they are reading in order to plan for the
class discussion. This is a wonderful immersion technique that will help the student learn more
about the language while enjoying a good book and interesting discussion at the same time.

Literature at its BEST....The Classics (8th-12th Grades)
I am anticipating great discussion and analysis as we read the classics together. Students will look
for author's intent, reoccurring themes, symbolism, and cause and effect as we read novels like
Animal Farm, Of Mice and Men, The Cay, The Screw Tape Letters, The Prince and the Pauper,
The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin, and The Diary of Anne Frank. This course will also have a
writing component and possibly two weeks of poetry.

Algebra 1 (Full year course)--(8th-12th Grades)
Algebra 1 develops the basic skills necessary for a wide variety of problem solving situations and
is the foundation for all advanced math subjects. We will cover standard Algebra 1 topics
including (1) operations with real numbers, (2) linear equations and inequalities, (3) exponents,
(4) polynomials, (5) quadratics, (6) rational expressions, and (7) radical expressions. Because we
have only twenty-eight 75-minute classroom sessions to cover a year-long course, we will move
at a quick pace in the classroom. Students must have strong pre-algebra skills and are expected to
brush up on them during the summer—I will provide a link to free, downloadable worksheets.
Being good at Algebra is achievable for all and students will be able to use their Algebra skills to
explore and explain the world around them.
The instructor will select a textbook and provide one to each student as part of the
yearly materials fee. Please note, this class runs for 1 hour and 15 minutes, which is
longer than our traditional 3rd period class.

through the scientific method as we complete experiments together, discussing purpose,
hypothesis, materials, procedure, and conclusion. Students will be encouraged to summarize and
discuss concepts covered in the weekly reading, done at home, through learning games and
presentations. All activities, experiments, and concepts presented will be delivered in an ageappropriate format. We have chosen to use the same text and subject matter for this age group as

observational, working through the scientific method without completing full lab write-ups like
