Aircraft Over Islands
Declares Mayday

Reports of a plane crash in Lake Champlain traveled quickly around
the Champlain Islands on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Initially the incident
was reported as a plane crash in the area of the Sand Bar State Park.

Come travel along with Northern Bronze,
Vermont’s exciting handbell ensemble, as they

Knight Point State Park
Announces Summer
Season
The Islands Center at Knight Point State Park, a nonprofit organization that provides programming in the
Park in North Hero under the Big Tent, announces its
eighth summer season of concerts, and 10th annual
Fireworks Extravaganza!
The Fireworks will be held on Friday, July 3rd, with
festivities starting at 5 p.m. There will be food, fun
for the kids, music, and free admission, donations
gratefully accepted. Concerts are held on Tuesdays
starting July 14th. Returning favorite artists include
Starline Rhythm Boys, Mango Jam, Jenni Johnson
and the Junketeers and Jimmy T. The Mike Smith
Memorial Car Show will be held on Sunday, August
23rd. Shakespeare lovers will be glad to know that
the Vermont Shakespeare Company will present
Romeo and Juliet on August 1 and 2 in the Park.
The Islands Center Board is looking for a few
good volunteers! Sponsors are also needed for the
concerts in order to keep the cost of tickets to $5 for
adults. Kids under 12 are always free.

Health Council Grant
Requests
The Grand Isle County Health Council is
considering requests for grants for the year
2016. Requests should be submitted by July 15
to: Grand Isle County Health Council, c/o John
Roy, 4 Roy’s Ridge Road, South Hero, Vermont
05486.
In general, the Council seeks to help nonprofit organizations with specific programs or
purchases that make a positive impact on public
health throughout the county. As an example, in
previous years, the Council has awarded grants
to emergency response agencies in the county,
to volunteer agencies that provide resources
and talents to the residents of the county, to
agencies whose programs provide services to
children and families, and to programs that seek
to provide guidance and education in healthy
lifestyles.
The requests for grants should describe in
detail the program or purchase and its purpose
and should include recognition that awarded
grants are subject to review and report in order
to determine that awards are used for the
purpose requested. Also, the request should
include a promise to return the award if it is not
used or if it is not used for the purpose intended.
The Council is comprised of directors from
each county town. We welcome inquiries
regarding grants or participation on the Council.

Siblings can be friends, companions,
playmates and rivals. How parents relate to
each child influences the sibling relationship.
Parents are invited to explore issues related
to sibling rivalry, as well as strategies that
minimize their development and chances of
them becoming harmful. After all, rivalry is
a natural part of growing up in a family with
more than one child.
Jeanine Fitzgerald will be holding a parent
training on May 11th from 6:00pm-8:00pm at
the Grand Isle Elementary School.
Jeanine Fitzgerald is a certified Human
Behavior Consultant and Specialist, and
Owner of The Fitzgerald Institute of Lifelong
Learning. Jeanine specializes in researchbased strategies in educational leadership,
relationship-building, motivation, preventing
the factors that compromise the fulfillment of
a child’s maximum potential and implementing
positive interventions in “real life” settings.
She understands the daily struggles and
frustrations of educators and parents, and
honors the “hero within” each individual she
has the privilege to work along side. Jeanine
draws on more than 35 years of professional
experience as a certified teacher, mental
health professional and mother of three grown
children; she understands the promise of every
child, as well as the diversity of their needs.

So, have you heard the phrase, “If you
don’t like the weather in Vermont, just wait
5 minutes and it will change? Or something
close to that! Well, we are certainly are living
the reality of it during these past few weeks
and the wind, oh, the wind. I fondly hear the
voice of my father in my head reciting his
version of the line from the poem by Tromby
(pen-named Baptiste), “Da wind she blows
on Lake Champlain and den she blows some
more”. No truer words have been spoken! I
hope that is the last we will see of snow and
brighter, warmer, sunnier days are ahead.
On a special community note, I want to
send a shout ou” to all of the PE Teachers in
Grand Isle County and their coordination of
the County Rowing Event held recently at
Alburgh School. It was fun and exciting for
the student participants and for the families,
staff, teachers, administrators and students
who were there to cheer them all on. I was
a wonderful example of school/community
spirit and I hope we can all work together
to see more of these County-wide events
happening. Kudos to Barb Larvey and the
whole crew for a great event! EVENTS
BLOOD DRIVE: There will be a Blood Drive
on Tuesday, April 14 from noon to 5 pm at the
Islands in the Sun Senior Center, 57 South
Main St. The need for blood is constant and
only volunteer donors can fulfill that need
for patients in our community. Nationwide,
someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3
seconds and most of us will need blood in
our lifetime.
HEART OF LIFE FUNDRAISER FOR
RELAY FOR LIFE: A special evening of fun
and dancing will be held on Saturday, May
2 at the Alburgh Legion to raise money for
the Franklin County Relay for Life for the
American Cancer Society. The band Them
Nakeds will be playing and there will be raffles
for many wonderful prizes. A request of a
$10.00 donation at the door. All proceeds will
support the Heart of Life Team’s fundraising
efforts for the Relay. Come out and support
a most worthy cause and have a great time! MAPLE BREAKFAST: Mark your calendars
for a hearty Maple Breakfast on Sunday, May
3 from 9 to Noon at the St. Amadeus Parish
Center. The menu- ham, bacon, eggs, veggie
egg bake, home fries, blueberry pancakes,
sausage gravy & biscuits, maple dumplings,

The Village of Alburgh will be in the
process of replacing and repairing broken
water meters in the upcoming weeks. If your
water meter is one that needs repairs and you

ST. PATRICK’S FESTIVAL
The Annual St. Patrick’s Festival will be
held on Saturday, April 18, from 4 to 6 pm
and on Sunday, April 19, from 11:30 to 2:30

The concession stand will be open on
Saturday serving Michigans and hot dogs,
potato salad, and dessert. Booths will be
open and raffle ticket will be available.
A turkey dinner will be served on
Sunday from 11:30 to 2:30 pm The menu
will include roast turkey, mashed potatoes,
dressing, cranberry sauce, vegetable, rolls,
dessert, coffee, tea or milk. Tickets are $9
for adults and $5 for children under 12.

There will be a food sale, jewelry/craft
booth/white elephant table, scratch ticket
raffle, religious articles, 20-week club

Center is planning an exhibit on St. Mary’s
Academy. They are looking for St. Mary’s

chairs, maps, chalk boards, trophies, pins,
ribbons, graduation gown/cap, graduation
certificate/diplomas, sports equipment,

SPRING RUMMAGE SALE
The Three Steeples United Methodist
Church will be holding their annual spring
rummage sale on Friday, April 24 from
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, April
25, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the
Three Steeples United Methodist Church,
491 Route 11, Champlain.
A lunch consisting of michigans,

DODGE MEMORIAL LIBRARY NEWS
Many activities are taking place at
the Dodge Memorial Library and this is
National Library Week.
The knitters and crocheters group
have been meeting regularly since last fall
and will meet for the last time this season
on April 29th. Plans are to begin meeting
again in September. Everyone is welcome
regardless of your ability or knowledge.
Story time continues every Tuesday
morning at 10:00 a.m. and will continue
through May. Miss Sara provides the
children with a story, songs, an activity
and snack. This event is free of charge and
open to the public.
Mah-Jongg is played every Friday
morning at the library from 10:00 a.m.
until noon. Stop by if you are interested in
learning or already know how to play and
want to join in the fun.
The Adult Book Club continues to meet
on the last Thursday of the month at 7:00
p.m. The book to be discussed on April 30th
is The Storied Life of A.J.Fikry. Books may
be borrowed from the library.
The Take A Bite Out Of Books program
is well underway. Over 40 students in
grades 5 through 7, from Rouses Point,
Champlain and Mooers, registered for this
program representing the Dodge Memorial
Library. In addition to the 5th through 7th
graders, four freshmen and an eighth
grader volunteered to be Junior Coaches.
These students are responsible for reading
6 books in approximately 4 months, meet
weekly with coaches to discuss and review
the book and prepare for a Competition
on May 30th at the Champlain Centre
Mall in Plattsburgh. There will be other
teams representing 5 libraries in this
competition. This is a big commitment for
these students. So if you are at the Mall on
May 30th, please stop by one of the Take A
Bite Out Of Books Competition and cheer
them on.
Library Director, Donna Boumil,
received an Arts Grant through the
Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. This
grant is for an adult watercolors class.
There are 13 adults taking this five-week
class with a culminating Art Show. Connie
Cassevaugh is the teaching artist. Watch

The Clinton County Historical Society is
partnering with Friends of the Plattsburgh
Public Library to host Joseph Bebo for a
talk and presentation on his recent book.
Bebo’s latest publication is an historical
fiction about his relative, Toussaint
Charbonneau, member of the infamous
Lewis and Clark expedition and his wife,
Sacagawea. Copies of Bebo’s book will be

STRIDES FOR JAMES 5K/10K RUN
The Third Annual Strides for James
5k/10k run, 1-mile walk, and children’s run
will be held at the Miner Institute in Chazy
on Saturday, May 9. This event is held in
memory of James Wilson, a passionate
runner and outdoorsman whose life was
cut short in 2012. The proceeds from
the race go to the James Dean Wilson
Scholarship Fund at Clinton Community

in time for spring and summer walking and biking.
You can sign up for a street or section of street near your home or where you walk,
or you can join South Hero Land Trust staff, board, and families for a group clean-up of
White’s Beach from 10:00-11:00 am. This is a great chance to introduce your family to

updated Town Plan. Comments from

Executives from Vermont Electric
Cooperative discussed the proposed
solar farm on the approx. 25 acre
property that Mr. Lavin intends to rent
to them. The project is designed to be
“green” and may enhance the Town’s
image as well as create more electric
generation during the peak summer
months. If the project goes through,
VEC will install infrastructure in the
form of some access roadways and
some underground wiring vaults that
will enhance the value of the remaining
Lavin Property. See the report in Town
Hall. A motion was approved to support
the VEC COOP Community Solar
project. VEC is currently applying to the
Public Service Board for this project.
A motion was made and approved to
edit a letter of support for the VEC solar
panel project, as discussed, and to allow
Christopher Herrick to sign it.

report for the South Street project as
written. This order was reviewed by
the Town Consulting engineer, Evan

Hunters are gearing up for Vermont’s spring
youth turkey hunting weekend later this month
and getting ready for the regular spring turkey
hunting season that starts May 1.

Vermont offers some of the best turkey hunting
in New England according to the Vermont Fish
& Wildlife Department. In 2014, Hunters took
5,160 turkeys in both the youth weekend and
regular seasons, and 1,232 turkeys in the fall
season. What makes Vermont’s spring gobbler season
special? Vermont’s turkey hunting is statewide
during the spring season. Vermont’s turkey
population is one of the highest in New England. You can buy a turkey hunting license without
having to go through a lottery. The turkey
license comes with two spring tags for two
bearded birds and one tag for a turkey of either
sex in the fall season. Plus, you get to hunt the
entire weekend, because hunting is allowed on
Sundays. Youth turkey hunting weekend is April 25-26
this year. Landowner permission is required
to hunt on private land. To be eligible, a youth
must be age 15 or under. The youth must have
successfully completed a hunter education
course and possess a hunting license, a turkey
hunting license and a free youth turkey hunting
tag. The youth also must be accompanied by an
unarmed adult who holds a hunting license
and is over 18 years of age. Shooting hours are
one half hour before sunrise to 12:00 Noon. The youth may take one bearded turkey during
youth weekend and two bearded turkeys in the
regular May hunting season. Last year, young
hunters took 547 turkeys during Vermont’s twoday youth hunt.
The regular spring turkey hunting season is
May 1-31. Shooting hours are one half hour
before sunrise to 12:00 Noon. Two bearded
turkeys may be taken, and all of Vermont is open
to turkey hunting during the youth weekend and
regular spring season. A shotgun or bow and arrow may be used in
the youth turkey or regular spring turkey hunting
seasons. Shot size must be no larger than #2 and
no smaller than #8. “Last year’s brood production was right
around average,” said Vermont turkey project
leader Amy Alfieri. “Even though turkey flocks
are being seen across the state, the long winter
with deep powder may result in a slightly lower
than average harvest.”
Vermont was the first New England state to reestablish wild turkeys when it released 31 wild
birds from New York in 1969 and 1970. Today,
the Green Mountain State has an estimated
45,000-60,000 turkeys.

THE SETBACK STORY, PART 2

Here is an interesting question for
North Hero property owners: where is
the front of your property? The answer is
not quite as obvious as you might think.
If you live on South End Road or Bridge
Road or any other road, the front of your
house is the side that faces the road. But,
if you have shoreline as one side of your
lot, then the shore side is the “front” of
your property.
However, almost everyone in our town
has a house that faces a road. What is the
setback of your house on the road side of
your property? The easy answer is that
the setback is where your house now sits
on the road side. If it was built previous
to 1972 (the beginning of zoning in our
town), the setback is long established and
would be grandfathered if the structure
or even the front porch had to be rebuilt.
I could not allow you to build closer to
the road, but the original footprint would
be respected.
Those who are building on an
undeveloped lot today have to observe
rather stringent road setbacks. If the
road is U.S. Route 2, the setback is 100
feet from the near edge of the road to the
structure. The setback for a new house
on a town road is 75 feet. On a private
road or a deeded right of way, the setback
is 50 feet on the front or 25 feet if the road
goes by the side of your place. As many
of you realize as you drive home, during
the pre-1972 era there was much more
leniency regarding the placement of a
house or cottage in relation to the road
nearby.
And that’s pretty much it for
setbacks. If I have brought up questions

PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER

We took a trip back in time this week.
We also took a trip to the left coast of
Africa this week. Next week we will
have an immersion experience in light
and sound energy, and will show off
our amazing talents in front of our
community.
Our fifth and sixth graders dove deeper
into the characters, and factors that drove
the colonies towards the Revolutionary
War. We learned how England threw so
many resources toward the colonies
during the Seven Years War that they
were obliged to then try and recover
resources (through taxation), which
created a vicious cycle.
On Wednesday we were treated to a visit
and performance by the South Burlington
African Drummers. Christina Toner-the head of the South Burlington High
School instrumental program--brought
her group and they were outstanding. It
was apparent that Mrs. Toner works hard
to build strong relationships with her
student’s, and through this fundamental
aspect of her (our) teaching practice there
exists fantastic evidence of learning.
We learned songs in a Ghanaian dialect
and the ways drumming is used to
communicate stories, messages, and, of
course, for fun.
Next week is the 4th Annual North
Hero Talent Show. On April 16th at 6pm,
the lights will dim, and the stars will shine.
There are acts ranging from: Irish step
dancing, singing, feats of strength, and
video production. There will be a bake
sale, which will be hosted by our lovely
and supportive PTYO. The event takes
place at the North Hero Community Hall.
If there are sixth grade families
interested in having further shadow day
experiences, and you would like support
please give me a call. If there are families
with four, and five year old students who
may be enrolling in kindergarten next
year please give me a call. We will be
coordinating a kindergarten orientation/
informational meeting in May, and based
on availability of families.
This week on Tuesday we were visited
by some friends from the food shelf.
Walt came by with his (the food shelf’s)
new purchase, which is a shiny new
van. Walt wanted to share their purchase
because some of the money came from
student donations. Earlier this year the
third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders did
a service learning project that had them
pick places to donate that were important
to them. Marlee Douglas, specifically,
focused her projects fund raising to
support the food shelf.
On Wednesday night our preschool
program and Eagle Care after care
program hosted a parent event. They
hosted, “The Brain Science of Play,” which
looked at the importance of play in the
early formative years and how important
it is in shaping developmental skills.
There was a solid turnout by parents,
caregivers, and kiddos too.
It certainly was a week of learning
and opportunity. I would tout this week
as relatively usual for us, but certainly
outstanding. It is a small but mighty
school, and we do love it so.

Vernal Pool Walk at
Missisquoi NWR
Join Park Ranger, David Frisque for a look at
the life and activity in a vernal pool early in the
spring. Vernal pools are important breeding
areas for some of the more reclusive and
seldom seen amphibians such as wood frogs,
and salamanders. Because these temporary
wetlands often dry up completely in late summer
or early fall, egg laying and early development of
juvenile salamanders and frogs must begin early
in the spring. The walk will be at the Stephen
Young Marsh Trail located on Tabor Rd. about
one mile past (south) of the Headquarters Bldg.
on Friday evening April 17. The walk begins at
6:00 PM and will end at about 8:00 PM. Bring
waterproof knee or hip boots and a headlamp
or small flashlight.

South Hero Historical Society Presents “Bean Co. and Canning Factory”
Join the members of the South Hero Historical Society on May 1 when they host a program on the town’s Bean Co. and Canning Factory.
In the early 1900s of South Hero history, the town boasted both a Bean Company and a Canning Factory which canned local corn. Come hear more
about them! You’ll learn where they were located and why, how many years they existed for, and what effect they had on the community at that time.
David Fifield, whose father and grandfather owned the Bean Co. will be speaking. All are welcome and please bring your memories to share. Pictures
will be available from the Vermont Historical Society, but please bring any you might have.
The programs are held in the upstairs classroom at Folsom Education and Community Center on the first Friday of most months and begins at 7 pm. All

Island Arts Gallery, located in the conference room at the Merchants Bank in South Hero, is proud to host the
works of Burlington photographer Nate Mosseau for the month of April.
Mosseau graduated from Montreal’s McGill University in 2011 and has since traveled to more than 25
countries, capturing the way people interact with their natural environment – taking care of it, or lack of taking
care. His work is a combination of anthropology agriculture and photography.
“I look to create more with my photos. To find parts and pieces of the world overlooked or underused and
bring them out in a different light. I look for beauty in corners and empty windows that no one else sees. When
exposed in the right way, a corner, or where the sidewalk runs into a building, or the hood of a car can be much
more than those items on their own. I try to make people look at the world in their immediate surroundings
differently, to see the smaller, mostly unnoticed parts of the world.”
Mosseau finds movement especially helpful in the creative process, even something as simple as a walk
around the neighborhood.
“My process is constant, I almost always have a camera in my hand,” he said.

ABC’s Easter Egg Hunt
a Blast!
The Easter Egg Hunt held by Alburgh’s ABC committee was nothing but a
blast for over one hundred kiddos and adults. Snowy, blowy, and cold was
the weather last Saturday, April 4, but the hunt for brightly colored eggs
went on as planned.
Hunt Safely This Turkey Season
Hunting safely during turkey season is easy if you follow tips issued by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.
In Vermont, May first is the beginning of spring turkey season, a day almost as important as the opening of deer season. While Vermont’s spring turkey seasons are
safe (Vermont has not had any incidents in the last five years) precautions are needed to ensure they stay that way. Camouflage or drab colored clothing is almost
mandatory to outwit a keen-sighted gobbler. Unfortunately, camouflage often makes it just as hard for hunters to spot one another as it does for turkeys.
“Almost all of the incidents during turkey season have been caused by hunters who didn’t positively identify the target before they pulled the trigger,” said Chris
Saunders, hunter education manager. “And the person they mistake for a turkey is often a friend trying to stalk a turkey call.”
With the opening of spring turkey hunting season near, the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department urges hunters to consider these safety tips:
• Never shoot unless you’re absolutely sure of your target. Look for a beard as only turkeys with beards are legal during the spring season. If you’re not sure, skip
the shot. Lack of positive identification could result in shooting an illegal bird, or worse, another hunter.
•
Never stalk a gobbling turkey. Your chances of getting close are poor, and you may be sneaking up on another hunter.
•
Avoid red, white, blue and black in clothing and equipment. A tom turkey’s head has similar colors.
•
Stick with hen calls. A gobbler call might draw in other hunters.

of vision

Wrap your turkey in blaze orange for the hike
back to the car.

Always sit with your back against a tree
trunk, big log or a boulder that is wider than
your body. This protects you from being
accidentally struck by pellets fired from
behind you.
•
Place decoys on the far side of a tree trunk or
a rock. This prevents you from being directly
in the line of fire should another hunter
mistakenly shoot at your decoy.
•
Wear hunter orange while moving from
set-up to set-up. Take it off when you are in
position.
This year the department’s hunter education
program is helping the local chapter of the National
Wild Turkey Federation pair up new hunters of all
ages with experienced NWTF hunters for turkey
season. The NWTF is also offering new hunters a
chance to meet experienced hunters interesting in
taking on mentors for turkey season at their JAKES
Day event at the Waterbury-Stowe Fish and Game

Subordination of Current Use Lien
Vermont Proposed Rule: 15P022
AGENCY: Dept. of Taxes, Agency of Administration
CONCISE SUMMARY: When a taxpayer enrolls in the Use Value Appraisal
(“UVA” or “Current Use”) Program, he or she agrees to the State’s
placement of a lien on his or her enrolled property, which protects the
state’s interest in keeping the enrolled land undeveloped and allows the
State to penalize land development through taxation. Many mortgage
lenders request that the State agree to subordinate its Current Use lien
to their mortgages. 32 V.S.A. § 3777 gives the Commissioner discretion
to subordinate “to the extent that the Commissioner is satisfied that the
landowner will maintain sufficient equity in the enrolled land to satisfy
both the lender upon development of the enrolled land.” The State
then evaluates subordination requests to determine whether the State’s
interest is protected if it subordinates to the lender’s mortgage.

Prekindergarten Rules
Vermont Proposed Rule: 15P023

CONCISE SUMMARY: Overview - Act 166 of 2014 provides universal access
to high-quality prekindergarten education. This access is an entitlement
for any three, four, or five year-old not enrolled in kindergarten. Parents
may choose to enroll their child at public expense in: 1. a prequalified
prekindergarten program in a public school or 2. a prequalified private
provider or Head Start program either within the school district of
residence or outside the district, depending on the prekindergarten
region established by the district.

Pre-Register Your Child for R&R Camp
The Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department is pleased to announce the thirteenth annual Sheriff’s
R&R (Respect & Responsibility) Summer Camp. This year’s R&R Camp is a five-day, adventure-based
program which will emphasize team building activities, respect for self and others, taking responsibility
for one’s actions as well as many other opportunities designed to physically and mentally challenge
and educate the campers. New this year, camp is limited to students currently enrolled in 5th through
7th grades who will be age fourteen or younger on July 1, 2015. Only children that reside full-time in
Grand Isle County are eligible to attend.
Final registration and an informational meeting are scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at 5 pm, at the
Folsom School in South Hero. The R&R Camp is scheduled for five days: Monday through Friday, July
20 to 24, from 8 am to 4 pm, and will include activities such as team-building games and exercises,
water activities, ropes and adventure course, as well as, educational components on the dangers
associated with alcohol, drug and tobacco use.
The cost of the camp will be $50 per camper. Make checks payable to the Grand Isle County
Sheriff’s Department. Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily. Transportation to and from Folsom
School will be available at each town’s elementary school. The camp will be based out of Folsom
School and the campers will travel to various locations via bus to the day’s planned activities. A camp
schedule will be provided to parents prior to camp.
Pre-registration is required along with the registration fee by May 15. Due to budgetary and
logistic constraints, registration is limited to fifty campers. Camp slots will be filled on a first come-first
served basis with a completed registration form and payment. A waiting list will also be compiled. An
information packet and camp schedule will be sent to all campers as the start of camp approaches.
Camp registration is limited, so, submit your application as soon as possible-- this camp usually fills
within one week.

submitted by Albert Poirier requesting authorization
to use bottom barriers to control aquatic nuisance
plants in Squire’s Bay of Lake Champlain in the
Town of Alburgh conducted in accordance with the
conditions set forth in Aquatic Nuisance Control

Alburg Rod & Gun Club News

While driving the Greenwoods Road in Alburgh the past few years, you may have noticed some
improvements taking place at the Alburg Rod & Gun Club, thanks to the support of many people
through the participation in our fundraisers and by purchasing memberships.
With a new roof on the clubhouse, we are now focused on the exterior and interior of the building.
Upon completion of the clubhouse project, we are planning family friendly events regarding the
introduction to, and promotion of the outdoor sports and conservation.
As with any organization, the Alburg Rod & Gun Club needs the help of members and others in order
to complete these projects. We will need the help of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, earthwork
equipment owner-operators, and jacks-of-all-trades.
Please consider becoming a member and helping out in order to provide a safe and enjoyable facility
for you and your family. Memberships are available at the Bargain Barn in Alburgh, Bill’s Sporting
Goods in Grand Isle, and at our monthly meetings held on the second Monday of the month, 70 pm
year round at the clubhouse. Please support the local businesses that provide a venue to purchase
memberships, and we hope to see you at club.

Winter doesn’t seem to want to give
up, they are saying warm weather this
next week. It will be so nice. The lake
is looking like the ice might go before
long. As I passed by it today, I noticed
it was very black, not a good place for
fisherman. I’ve been traveling each day
going to Cardiac Rehab, hope it will all be
worth it.
There was a farewell Mass on Sunday
for Fr. Lawrence Ridgley. Best wishes for
a great retirement. Father Ridgley will be
having open heart surgery a few days
later. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
The school has recently joined a free
on-line service called, Skype in the
Classroom. Our first Skype session, Mr.
Flax’s class was our first Skype session.
The student’s skyped with a private girls
school in Dallas, Texas. Each class read
a book about their location. Mr. Flax’s
group read Snowflake Bentley and wore
Vermont tee shirts.
After this Mrs. Walkers’ class talked
with second graders in Kenya, Africa.
They sang their National Anthems for
each other, showed their flags, talked
about what our country was like and the
Isle La Motte students got to show snow
to the students in Kenya, who has been
seen it before.

Screening of
Vermont’s Island Line
Revisited
On Thursday, May 7 at 7 pm, the Isle La Motte
Recreation Department is pleased to present the
documentary film by Jim Jones Vermont’s Island
Line Revisited. The film will be shown at the Isle La
Motte School. The rail line was truly dynamic as it
stretched through the islands with stops beginning
in Burlington, Starr Farm Beach, Colchester, South
Hero , Grand Isle, Abnaki, North Hero, Isle La Motte
Station, Alburgh, and from there both to Noyan,
Quebec and Rouses Point and west. It is anticipated
there will be retired railroaders who worked the line
and others with railroad expertise to pass on their
knowledge and experiences.

of roast pork and all the wonderful home-made

family to The Islands in the Sun Senior Center for an

Beowulf. They will represent Vermont at the
New England Drama Festival next month.

I truly believe every vote counts and that was proven last month for the positions of Town Clerk &

The Vermont Enhanced 9-1-1 Board has joined
a nationwide campaign to help Americans of
all ages recognize the importance of 9-1-1 and
the role they play in ensuring effective and
efficient emergency response in times of crisis.
Groups including the United States Congress and
the National Emergency Number Association
(NENA), a leading public safety association, have
also recognized April as National 9-1-1 Education
Month, and are encouraging the media, the
9-1-1 community, the wireless industry, and
public information providers to engage in
9-1-1 awareness and
education activities this
month.
As Vermonters utilize
new communications
technologies
and
devices, 9-1-1 education
takes on increased
importance
for
everyone, but especially
for children, teens, and
parents. The prevalence
of cellphones and the
challenges they pose for
emergency responders,
as well as the ability in
some states, including
Vermont, to text to
911, are examples of
changing
technology
which requires keeping
up with the changes
and ongoing public
education to keep the

NORTH HERO- Lawrence W. Pratt, 83, of
North Hero and formerly of Montpelier died
on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the University of
Vermont Medical Center surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 14, 1931 in Montpelier, the son
of Wayne S. and Freda (Silloway) Pratt. He graduated
from Montpelier High School in 1950 and received
an associate degree from Montpelier Seminary
School before enlisting into the United States Army.
On September 7, 1953, he married his childhood
sweetheart, Jeanine Canales at St. Augustine’s
Catholic Church. During the Korean War, he served
his country in Germany before being honorably
discharged. He continued his service as a member
of the Vermont National Guard until the 1960’s.
After his service in the army, he attended Norwich
University and graduated as a member of the Magnificent
Class of 1959, receiving his bachelor’s degree in civil
engineering. He spent his career working for the
Federal Highway Administration and participated in
the construction of Interstate 89. From 1983 until his
retirement in 1987, he and Jeanine expanded their
horizons, moving to Kuwait where Larry was an adviser
to the Kuwait government on their road building projects. The Pratt’s returned to Vermont, living on their sailboat
while building a home in North Hero, Vermont. Larry
worked for 10 yrs. for the Lake Champlain Transportation
Company. He was a member of the North Hero volunteer
Fire Department and Past President and founding
member of the Pelots Bay Restoration Association. He
maintained a varied interest in airplanes, obtaining his
solo soaring license, building model planes and flying
remote control planes. He had a variety of sailboats over
the years and taught his children and grandchildren
how to sail. He played the trumpet in the Milton Town
Band and with the Inseldudlers, a local German Band.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanine Pratt of North
Hero, daughter, Jody Barna and her husband Ed
of Randolph; sons, Dean Pratt and his wife Patsy of
Los Angeles, CA, Jeff Pratt and his wife Jennifer of
Durango, CO, Tim Pratt and his companion Angela
Ribolini of Berlin, Eric Pratt of Baltimore, MD, and Carl
Pratt and his wife Sue of Pittsfield, MA; 9 grandchildren
and 1 great grandchildren; sister Constance Doucette
and her husband Roland of Baltimore, VT; and
brother, Rodrick Pratt and his wife Ralpha of Barre, VT
Calling hours will be held from 6-8:00 pm on Wednesday,
April 15, 2015 at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A
Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 am on Thursday, April 16,
2015 at St. Augustine’s Church. Both in Montpelier, VT.
