Lake Conroe Communities Network For Immediate Release April 16, 2015 Contact: Amy Barnett Telephone: 409.782.6112 Email: [email protected] Public Forum: Understanding Bond Elections for Montgomery County and MISD April 23, 2015 MISD Superintendent Dr. Beau Rees and Montgomery County Commissioner Mike Meador to discuss facts of proposed bonds Montgomery, Texas – April 16, 2015– In a meeting open to the public, Montgomery ISD Superintendent Dr. Beau Rees will discuss the terms of the school district’s nearly $257 million bond proposal that would allow for the construction of three new schools and implementation of improvements on existing campuses. Montgomery County Commissioner Mike Meador and a representative from County Judge Craig Doyal’s office will explain the conditions of the $350 million bond tax payers will consider that would be used for road improvements. Lake Conroe Communities Network is hosting the event at the Walden Yacht Club on April 23, 2015, at 7 p.m. “The MISD bond election is all about growth; 80 percent of the money will be used to build three new schools, including the district’s second comprehensive high school,” said Rees. “Large high schools are expensive. It will cost about $120 million to build, which is almost half of the bond.” If voters pass the school district bond, taxpayers in MISD will see a tax increase of 5 cents for a total tax rate of $1.39. “For an average home price of $200,000, taxes will go up $7.71 a month, or about $85 a year,” added Rees. Montgomery County also called for a bond election to “meet the needs of future growth.” “Montgomery County is expected to double in population by 2035,” said Montgomery County Judge Craig Doyal. The county’s bond would provide millions of dollars for road improvements in each of the county’s four precincts. One point of contention among Woodlands-based leaders is the inclusion of a six mile extension of Woodlands Parkway from FM 2978 to Highway 249. Many worry the extension will increase traffic; the bond, however, will not increase taxes but be paid by revenues earned through the growth in the county’s tax base. “While I cannot advocate for or against our proposed road bond election, it is appropriate for me to explain why we have called for the election. We look forward to that opportunity at the April 23 forum hosted by LCCN,” said Doyal. The bond elections will take place on May 9; early voting begins April 27.
