The day begins at 10 a.m. with artists, crafters, and outreach programs. Big Mike and the Motivators will be rockin’ out with us this year, and we are sure you will enjoy their brand of music. Besides the Bristol Fire Department’s chicken barbeque and homemade pies from Harmony Circle, we will be joined by Cafe Sol and Java Mama this year. There will be face painting, water bottle rockets, and more for the kids. Last year we had over 30 vendors of all kinds, and it looks like we will be surpassing that number this year. We are sure you will be able to find something you can’t live without from one of our local artisians. The 11th Annual Vintage Car & Tractor Show is also held on the same day in the park. Registration is free and starts at 11 am. Everyone registering gets a button. We welcome cars, truck, motorcycles, and tractors, so if you want to show off a little, come join us for a day of family fun. In the lodge is a kitchen area with a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and a variety of houseware items for guests to use. The lodge also includes a restroom and showers, a variety of yard games and board games, a reading library, and tables and chairs for up to 24 guests. The retreat’s 43-acre property provides hiking trails into a wetland and hillside areas. Some favorite activities include: riding bikes around the lake, natural photography, viewing the starry night skies, and hiking to the waterfall. You can launch your kayak or canoe next door at the FLCC Mueller field station. Interior of “Fox Den” cabin About the owner Cathy Crane was raised in Canadice and returned here as an adult. Her love for the valley called her back. Wanting to share the area with folks who don’t get to experience the natural wonders that this area offers was her inspiration behind Turtle Rock Hollow. Turtle Rock Hollow has been three years in the making. Cathy has built each of the cabins and the lodge. She collected the stones for the stone patio from the creek beds, stained the buildings, and assisted in laying the electrical conduit. Re-purposing building materials and using the areas natural resources is a passion that has guided her way. It has been a long road traveled with baby steps. Cathy also has some plans for the future development of Turtle Rock Hollow. The Boy Scout group in Honeoye will be installing some wildlife watch-boxes, grooming the nature trail along the lake inlet, installing a small floating deck, and helping with general brush cleanup. Their involvement at Turtle Rock Hollow is expected to be ongoing. She also hopes to get the Girl Scouts involved doing plantings. Canadice Methodist Church celebrates historic 136th Strawberry Festival The Annual Strawberry Festival at the Canadice United Methodist Church has been so enjoyed by generations that it keeps returning year after year by popular demand. The next one will be the 136th on Saturday, June 20, with a family-style ham dinner, craft and bake sales, a silent auction, and, of course —strawberries (quarts of them for sale). The festivities will be from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. The ham dinner includes potato salad, baked beans, copper pennies, roll, beverage, and strawberry shortcake. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 5 to 12, and free for children under 5; shortcake only is $4. In 2011 the Strawberry Festival was a recipient of a New York State Legislative Resolution commending Canadice United Methodist Church the longevity of the festival. The first one was on Saturday, June 28, 1879, at Slouts Resort on Canadice Lake and was held there in subsequent years until 1916 when the City of Rochester bought the shoreline of the lake. For a few years afterward it was held at various homesteads until eventually it was moved to the church where it has been held ever since. (You can read more about the history of the Canadice Strawberry Festival on the website HemlockandCanadiceLakes.com.) So make plans to take part in this ongoing historic and fun event. The Canadice United Methodist Church is located at 5949 Canadice Hill Road in Canadice Corners. Takeouts are available, and the church is handicap accessible. Chalk Walk & Arts Fest has found a new home with Dansville ArtWorks Inc., a local arts organization dedicated to promoting all art forms in our area. The collaboration will gain greater visibility for both organizations and, it is hoped, will build sustainability for both as well. Retouching • Enhancements • Artistic Effects & More! Chalk Walk & Arts Fest is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, this year, with a grant from Livingston Arts (our county’s official arts council) and marketing support from Noyes Health, with the assistance of the Foundation for Dansville Education, Inc. and the Village of Dansville. Genesee Community College, Dansville Public Library, and the Town of North Dansville play logistical roles in this growing community arts event that includes sidewalk chalk art, live music by Steel Alchemy Community Steel Band (sponsored by Dansville Wayland Penny Saver/Genesee Country Express), and a juried arts and crafts show and sale in the historic downtown district. Dansville Mini Storage has stepped up for a second year to support the event, this year as our Art Supply Sponsor. My 93.9 FM is sponsoring a juried chalk artist. BEFORE (Original) In 2014, more than 200 individuals of all ages participated in Chalk Walk & Arts Fest! Now in its fourth year, community members are asked to “save the date” and plan to participate in the fun as community chalk artists and appreciators of all of the artwork. Business owners are invited to host our chalk artists for this rain or shine event. A slate of five juried sidewalk artists has been announced and includes: Briana Coogan-Bassett, Sarah Hulburt-Emerson and Jimmy Sinsebox, all three returning featured artists, and two new: Jeff Miller and Kim Binaghi Lee. Additionally, 11 fine artists and craft artisans have been selected to exhibit at the event on Ossian Street between Main and Elizabeth Streets. OM Grill & Lounge at 130 Main Street will be serving outdoors and offering seating under a tent beginning at 11 a.m. Hot dogs, Italian sausages, soft drinks, and legal beverages will be available. AFTER (Retouched) FREE ESTIMATE: e-mail your photo to [email protected] with a description of the Photoshop work you would like to have done, and you will receive an estimate (most will be between $10 and $50, depending on complexity). If agreed, the work will proceed, and the finished retouched image will be e-mailed back to you after your payment has been received. You must be the legal copyright owner of the photo. Digital photos only. Any questions, call 585-669-4114. More plans are in the works and will be announced as finalized. Plan to join the fun on Saturday, August 1, 10 a.m.– 4 p.m. in historic downtown Dansville. Chalk Walk & Arts Fest is open to all ages and free. I have tried other print advertising and had little success, but with The Lake Country Weekender I receive a steady stream of new customers.” —Sandy Hicks, Grounded by Yoga “The Lake Country Weekender’s front cover photo of a beautiful local countryside beckons one to turn the pages. As a long-time print advertiser, I know what is desirable—The Lake Country Weekender’s easy-to-read type makes my advertising stand out, not jammed with rows of other illegible messages.
