June Jabberings from the
Helm
by Rhonda Brewer
The weather this spring in Phoenix has been
phenomenal. It is almost June, and we have
had very few, if any, 100 plus days. Last
weekend, many LPSC members celebrated
Memorial Day at the lake while enjoying 82
degree temperature and light breezes.
Unfortunately, we all know the hot weather is
coming; it may already be here by the time
your read this article. Understandably some
LPSC members give up and shelve their
topsiders until cooler weather returns. A
few hearty souls continue to sail all summer
despite the heat. Some of us continue to
feed our wind addiction by scheduling our
sailing time for the evening/nighttime hours.
Our cruise directors, Bruce Andress and John
Bagwell, are planning to add two moonlight
sails to the event calendar for the summer.
Watch Meetup and the LPSC website for
more information on these nighttime sailing
opportunities.
Astronomical Society. Eric is an avid
astronomer and member of the Phoenix
Astronomical Society. Fascinated by science
he began taking things apart to see how they
worked at age 3 – and later on even learned
how to put them back together. At least
most of the time. Eric has a BA in Biology/
Premed from Rutgers College and an MS in
Computer Science from Polytechnic Institute
of New York. Always interested in
astronomy and space, he found the light
pollution and heavy tree cover of New York
to be frustrating enough to stick to
“textbook” astronomy, but upon moving to
Arizona and seeing the skies, realized it was
time to start some real observing. These
days, Eric can be seen regularly at star parties,
giving lectures or observing in the deep desert
with his automated 22” Dobsonian scope.
He lives in North Phoenix with his wife and
two cats.
Please plan to attend this special meeting. It
promises to be worth your while, and the air
conditioning is FREE!
Whether you nighttime sail with the Club or
on your own this summer, it's a great
opportunity to participate in a little star
gazing. To this end, they 2015 Board has
arranged an astronomy presentation for the
June general meeting on June 16. The
presentation will include a narrated Power
Point presentation including the folklore,
stories, science etc. behind the constellations.
There will also be something to take homepossibly charts of the northern, eastern,
southern and western sky. The presenter is
Eric Steinberg from the Phoenix

Pegleg Pete - Da Query
1. What is the name of the light line used to
haul a heavier working line? It is also
referred to as a mouse line.
2. What is the difference between a
downburst and a microburst?
3. A sailing vessel with the wind coming from
180 degrees relative would be ...
a) close hauled on the starboard tack
b) close hauled on the port tack
c) on a broad reach on a port tack
d) running before the wind
4. Wind that blows from a direction half way
between abeam and astern is called what?
This term can similarly be used to describe
waves that approach the boat from the
same direction.

Also where, when and how was it
measured?

Famous Thoughts….on
enjoying leisure
To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last
product of civilization, and at present, very
few people have reached this level. (Bertrand
Russell)
Famous Thoughts….on
getting away
Every now and then go away, have a little
relaxation, for when you come back to your
work, your judgment will be surer. Go some
distance away because then the work appears
smaller and more of it can be taken in at a
glance and a lack of harmony and proportion
is more readily seen. (Leonardo Da Vinci)
Pegleg Pete - Da Booty
1. The light line is called a messenger or
messenger line. (Stolen from Sailorspeak
by Bob Roitblat.)
2. A downburst is an area of strong, often
damaging winds produced by a convective
downdraft over an area from less than 1 10 KM in horizontal dimensions. A
microburst is a downburst that covers an
area less than 4KM along a side with peak
winds that last 2-5 minutes. These winds
are most associated with strong and
violent thunderstorms and have strong
wind shears that can result in aircraft
accidents. (Pillaged from The Glossary of
Meteorology by The American
Meteorological Society.)
3. The answer is d) running before the
wind. (Pilfered from Get Your Captain's
License by Charlie Wing.)
4. It is called a quartering wind or sea.
(Snagged from The Sailing Dictionary by
Joachim Schult.)
5. The biggest wave ever measured with
certainty was 110 feet tall in the middle
of the Pacific Ocean during a typhoon.
It was measured from the 480' long Navy
vessel called the USS Ramapo in 1933. The
officer on watch on the bridge saw the
crest of the wave aligned with the crows
nest. (Pinched from Do Dolphins Ever
Sleep? by Pierre-Yves and Sally Bely.)
