PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE:
Some reminders for all:
HelmetsThe good news is we have many students riding their bikes and skateboards to school. The bad
news is we have many students who are still not wearing helmets when they are riding and
rolling.
CA Vehicle Code states a “person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a
nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a
bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, or any
other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened
bicycle helmet.”
Our streets are very busy and accidents happen as students are riding or rolling to and from
school. We want our students to be safe and healthy, and that means wearing a helmet. If you are
unable to afford a helmet for your child, please contact the school and we can help to find
resources to get a helmet.
Be safe, wear a helmet. It’s the law.
Three Mile Runis Thursday, April 2. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we are hoping all students and
families will participate. Parent Kathy Godfrey has done an outstanding job getting sponsors for
our banners in the cafeteria- these are businesses who have donated to our PTA. Please check
them out at the end of our newsletter and patronize their businesses! Students have donation
envelopes. We are asking that families and friends donate a flat sum to our PTA for the three
mile run. All proceeds go to making our school a better place. This year, PTA has funded our
clubs, purchased equipment for classrooms and PE, and has provided for our student incentive
programs. Our PTA is outstanding, and the three mile run makes it possible for the PTA to help
out in so many ways. Thank you for donating, and thank you for supporting our school!
WALL OF FAME:
Each week our teachers select students who have been exemplary of the hard work and positive
energy we want to see in our classes. Students’ names are added to the “Wall of Fame” just outside
the activity quad. Congratulations are in order for the following students: Jackie Estes, Miguel
Guzman, Nancy Solano, Denice Chavoya, Thomas Prater, Anika Meyer, Desi Drake ,

AROUND SCHOOL
 Congratulations to Caelan Strueble who spent today at Fresno State University competing in the
California Geography Bee. Caelan did great at the first round of the State Geography Bee- he got 8 out
of 9 right on round 1, only having difficulty with one really tough question at the end. Unfortunately
only perfect scores moved on to the final round, but LAMS couldn’t be more proud of having a student
at the state level! Caelan and his family wanted to say a special thanks to Mrs. Lincoln and her
wonderful class, which focuses on geography along with history.
.
 Congratulations to Qili Paape. You may remember the Qili was honored as our local Elks Club
Americanism Essay Contest winner a few weeks ago. Qili’s essay has been selected as the winning
essay for Region 11. She has been invited to the Elks State Convention in San Diego so she can read
her essay and receive her award!

CHOIR NEWS
LAMS Choir took part in the Central Coast Choral Festival on Thursday at the Cal Poly PAC and
they looked and sounded great! You can see their performance by clicking on this link.
Cupcake Wars
…Kicked off this week and Mrs. Carlin’s 8th grade Home Ec students baked, decorated, and themed
their cupcakes to represent a tour of the states. Students came up with cupcake flavors and decorations
that represented their states and then created a display with information about their states and explained
the inspiration for their cupcakes. Judges had a difficult time looking for the group with the best
cupcakes, theme and decorations…but it was delicious work! Look in next week’s newletters for the
winners!

INCREDIBLE SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITY:
NOW REGISTERING!!!
This year, Laguna Middle School will be hosting the YMCA Youth Institute Summer Camp. This 5
week camp begins with a week of sleepaway camp followed by 4 weeks of amazing learning and
fun. Students at the camp will produce their own magazine and movies over the course of the
summer and will screen their movies at the Youth Institute film festival at the end. Student films
from the Cambria Youth Institute have been winners at the SLO International film festival and
others.
The camp will run from July 6- August 7 and will be from 9am-3pm Monday-Friday (The first
week, July 6-10 is the sleepaway camp portion with students camping in Mammoth Lakes for 4
nights). We do ask that students commit to the full 5 weeks of the program as they will be working
in production teams and will be developing their skills in working with one another.
This camp is open to students currently in grades 6-8. We are giving priority to students who are or
will be attending Laguna Middle School next year. There are only 20 spaces available in this camp
and the cost is $750 (only $150 a week for full time camp and a week away!) and financial
assistance is available. Signups will be coming soon. For more information, contact Dan Hartzell at
[email protected] or you can register on line here.

Medieval Madness! - Presenters from Ms. Lincoln’s and Mr. Townsend’s classes took us on
an adventure to Medieval Europe. Such talented and creative Superstars!
Ahearn’s Researchers- How can we help put a stop to bullying? Just ask Ms. Ahearn’s English
Language Development class. With the help of Ms. Thompson and Mrs. Schwoerer, students are
researching various types of bullying and creating presentations in Google Slides. We are impressed
with their outstanding work and efforts.
