the programme: WP410 - Land Demo Public - FP7

1
Timing: 10h00 – 11h00
The public will receive an overview of
the work carried out within the context
of the ICARUS project and the main
results achieved. An operational
briefing of the earthquake intervention
demonstration will be given.

SAR operations on a rubble field
Timing: 12h00 – 13h00
An apartment building has collapsed due
to the earthquake. Upon arrival at the
site, the relief workers use unmanned
aerial systems for aerial assessment,
victim search and rescue kit delivery.
Afterwards a heavy ground vehicle is
used for debris clearance and shoring
operations so that trapped victims can
be evacuated.
Networking lunch & visit of stands
Timing: 13h00 – 14h00
An on-site lunch will be provided. During the
lunch break, the public will have the opportunity
to discuss the different ICARUS tools in more
detail with the developers and get to know the
products.
Moreover, the public will receive live training
sessions on the ICARUS training and support
system, thereby experiencing first-hand how
easy to handle the ICARUS tools are.
B-FAST Deployment and set-up
The public will witness the rapid
deployment of the B-FAST team.
The team will be accompanied by
ICARUS unmanned search and
rescue tools and will set up a base
for operations.
The ICARUS solar aeroplane will be
launched to increase the situational
awareness of the search and rescue
team.
The ICARUS mission planning system
will assist the rescue team in
planning their mission.

SAR operations on a school building
Timing: 14h00 – 15h00
A school building has been damaged
by the earthquake. As the building structure
is very unstable and children could be
trapped inside, the rescue team decides
to send a small reconnaissance
unmanned aerial system and an
unmanned ground vehicle to search
for victims inside the school.
Collaborative victim search operations
in communication-deprived
environments will be showcased,
requiring the extensive autonomous capabilities of the
intervention vehicles.
6
SAR operations in a CBRN context
Timing: 15h00 – 16h00
A warehouse holding potentially dangerous
products has been damaged by the earthquake.
As no single ICARUS tool is able to inspect and
enter the building safely, all assets are jointly
deployed in a heterogeneous collaboration
framework. Aerial assessment conducted by the
solar aeroplane and outdoor rotorcraft render
information on structural integrity and the
presence of victims on the rooftops. The heavy
ground vehicle deploys the small ground vehicle
with its manipulator arm which enters the building
looking for human survivors and senses the
presence of dangerous products.
