POST‐DOCTORAL FELLOW MELLON PROGRAM IN URBAN LANDSCAPE STUDIES Post‐Doctoral Fellow, Mellon Program in Urban Landscape Studies Position Title: Post‐Doctoral Fellow, Mellon Program in Urban Landscape Studies Department: Garden and Landscape Studies Summary Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks has received a major award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to create a new interdisciplinary Program in Urban Landscape Studies. This grant is one of 15 made by the Mellon Foundation so far to major institutions of higher education and research, aimed at fostering the joint contributions that the humanities and the design and planning disciplines may make to understanding the processes and effects of burgeoning urbanization. In conjunction with this award, Dumbarton Oaks will appoint a Post‐Doctoral Fellow to participate in developing and coordinating the activities of the Mellon Program in Urban Landscape Studies within the Garden and Landscape Studies Program. The Fellow will report directly to the Director of Dumbarton Oaks and will work closely with the Director of Garden and Landscape Studies. Duties and Responsibilities Working in collaboration with the Director of Garden and Landscape Studies, the post‐
doctoral fellow will help develop the intellectual agenda and coordinate the activities of the Mellon Program in Urban Landscape Studies, which will bring scholars and designers together at Dumbarton Oaks to explore the history and future of urban landscapes (www.doaks.org/research/garden‐landscape/mellon‐initiative‐in‐urban‐landscape‐
studies/overview). Primary duties will include assisting with planning, coordinating, and overseeing a series of academic and public events such as symposia, colloquia, lectures and other scholarly meetings; helping to coordinate the Mellon Fellowship program and mentoring Mellon fellows; coordinating a program of practitioner residencies; contributing to writing, editing, and coordinating urban landscape publications, both print and on line (including on line exhibitions); and coordinating programs with neighboring institutions and related urban studies initiatives. The appointee is expected to demonstrate excellent knowledge of both urban history and contemporary design practice; to facilitate intellectual exchange between scholars and practitioners; and to provide scholarly input into the program’s academic and public events. Qualifications Education and/or Experience 
Ph.D. in urban, landscape, or design history; art or architectural history; history, anthropology, geography, or related fields, with a specialization in landscape or environmental studies. 
Familiarity with urban history, landscape architecture, and contemporary design required. 
Experience in scholarly publishing and teaching is desired. 
Superb organizational abilities, keen attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines are essential. Language skills English proficiency required; proficiency in additional languages desired. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Computer skills Computer fluency is essential, particularly with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat; familiarity with graphics programs is desired (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, GIS, Google Earth Pro). Preferred skills Preference will be given to people who have received their Ph.D. degrees within the past five years. Term This position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years. As a Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks, the incumbent will have access to the outstanding resources of the Research Library and become part of the larger community of scholars at Dumbarton Oaks. The expected start date is on or before September 1, 2015. Post‐Doctoral Fellows are expected to live in the Washington, DC area for the duration of their term.
