Fire Department Volunteers Recognized at SUMA
At this year’s SUMA President’s
Banquet on Tuesday February 3rd, Bill
and Sheila McCombs were honored with
the Meritorious Service Years award for
Fire Department Volunteers 20 Plus
Years.
Bill and Sheila moved to Langham in
1989 and shortly became involved in
their community.
Sheila joined the Langham Fire
Department in 1991. In 1993 she was
promoted to Captain and Training
Officer. With Sheila’s previous
experience as an Emergency Medical
Technician Instructor with SIAST, she
became responsible for the
Recertification of the First Responders
on the department. She also served as
an executive member (representing
LFD) on the Saskatoon Health District
First Responder Committee. Sheila is a
Fire Service Instructor providing training
to the North Corman Park Fire Chiefs
Association. She is certified in Critical
Incident Stress Management. Sheila is
also a member of the North Corman
Park Search and Rescue.
Bill was a constable with the Corman
Park Police. He joined the fire
department soon after arriving in
Langham. With previous experience as
an Emergency Medical Technician
Instructor with SIAST, Bill volunteered to
instruct an eighty hour First Responder
course. Eight people took the course
and our very own Langham First
Responders with the Langham Fire
Department was founded. Bill has
served on the fire department for the
last twenty five years; 1993 to 2003 as
Deputy Chief and 2003 to today as our
Chief. He is a Fire Service Instructor
providing training to North Corman Park
Fire Chief's Association. He is also a
member of the North Corman Park
Search and Rescue, Ice/Water River
Rescue and the LUSAR team.
The Town would like to thank Bill and
Sheila for their amazing dedication to
Langham. They both have volunteered
in town since they arrived and are a
superb example of what volunteers can
do for a community.

Emergency Planning Committee
We are a volunteer based community, with a combination of fire department, safety & quality coordinators & public works. We care about our community
and are currently working on updating emergency
planning procedures, including a community siren
for emergencies. With help from the community, we
will be prepared. This does not have to be a time
consuming task, you can be as heavily involved as you
wish, or just attend quarterly meetings for emergency preparedness updates. Our family time is important and with your help, we can be prepared as
a community. Any involvement you would like to
give is appreciated.
Chelsey Parry sent an email in , “First of all, the town of Langham has been amazing with snow removal, so kudos to them.

Also, my neighbor, George Eikel... He is out there during and
after every snowfall snow blowing the majority of the sidewalks on James Street! Thanks George :)” Thank you Chelsey
for your submission. We had several comments about another Snow Angel, Brandon Booth. Many residents on Finch and
beyond have commented to this office that he was out blowing off driveways and sidewalks.
To the many who weren’t mentioned, thank you for your
kindness and community mindedness, even though nothing is
said, your angel act was very much appreciated!

New Roots
The 1 Langham Girls Guides have the unique opportunity to give back to their community through
the New Roots project. Last year, Langham Elementary School seen their inside and outside walls begin
to buckle. With the necessary repairs that ensured
our children’s safety, the green space in front of the
school was torn up. The 1st Langham Girl Guides
offered to help replace the grass in front of the
school. With this came an opportunity to apply for a
green space grant designed for Girl Guides of Canada. We applied for the grant and each of our units;

Snow Angels
February has been our snow month! We have had more
than our share of the white stuff in the last couple of weeks.
I sent a call out through our Facebook page for people to
send out a thank you to the wonderful people that are our
Snow Angels. We had several thank you’s to our town crew
for the amazing job they did clearing our streets. I live in
Saskatoon and would enjoy it if my street and back alley were
cleared!
Langham & District Heritage Village and Museum
Sparks, Brownies and Guides were awarded $500 to
renew the green space at Langham Elementary
School. Between the grant and our own district
money we now have $2000 to put towards putting
down NEW ROOTS at our school. We have challenged our most experienced girls, the Guides, to do
the planning and implementing of such a large scale
project. We look forward to taking our units to shop
at Dieter Martin Greenhouse and learn from them
how to care and create a sustainable green space
that our families can enjoy for years to come.

Myth Buster: Plus 60 Name Change
In an attempt to bust the myth that somehow there is an
age requirement for participating in activities with the
Plus 60 Group we are considering changing our name.
The executive committee for The Plus 60 Group believe
that by changing our name the ‘junior’ seniors, and or
retirees, of our community may feel more welcome.
Therefore we are asking for name change suggestions;
‘Good Times’, ‘Dynasty Club’, ‘Heritage Coffee Cup
Gallery’, and my personal favorite, ‘Friends of Dick and
Jane’ have already been submitted. We ask that you
please vote for one of these or suggest one of your own
that would make you feel welcome, please contact any
club member at coffee hour at the Museum, or Corinne
Waldner at the town office (306) 283-4806 or myself,
Sela (306) 283-4381. For those of you who are not
familiar with us, The Plus 60 Group, we host coffee hour
every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:30-10:30am,
Potluck suppers on the last Wednesday of every month.
We partner with the Museum to offer events such as the
Valentine and Harvest Bake Sales, Depression Days
Dinner, Pierogi Making and cooking classes, as well as
Day Excursions, by motor coach or car-pooling, several
times a year. Watch for posters regarding our next
excursion, The Heritage Train Ride and Dinner at Ogema,
Sk. and remember if you are old enough to know who
Dick and Jane are you are old enough to join our group.
