Starting on Sunday 24 January 2016,
20 law students from the ANU College of
Law and other Australian law schools, will
undertake an intensive 2-week course in
Geneva. The Summer/Winter in Geneva
(SWinG) program will focus especially
on the work of those international
organisations located in Geneva, site
of the European headquarters of the
United Nations.
Most classes will be conducted on
the premises of various international
organisations (UN bodies, specialised
agencies and NGOs) visited in the course
of the program. In most cases, these
presentations will be conducted by lawyers
working at the organisation. In addition
to contributions by Dr Sarah Heathcote,
some of the classes may be conducted
by Geneva-based academics and by
officials in international organisations with
academic experience.
Particular attention will be paid to various
aspects of international human rights,
international trade and environmental law,
and a number of other specialised areas
of international law – given the location in
Geneva of inter alia the WTO, the OHCHR,
UNHCR, WHO, the ILO and the ICRC.
All classes and visits will be conducted
in English; knowledge of French is not
required. Assessment for the course will
principally take the form of an essay on an
approved topic, to be completed by the
participants early in first semester 2016,
following their return to Australia.

Travel
Participants are expected to make their own individual transportation arrangements to and from Geneva. Participants must arrive in
Geneva no later than Saturday 23 January 2016 (as the program formally starts on Sunday 24 January 2016) – though participants are
strongly advised to try and arrive in Europe several days earlier, to enable participants to get over jet lag in time for the start of formal
classes.
All classes and visits will, as far as possible, be arranged over a 5 day period in each of the 2 weeks of the program. Participants will
be responsible for the cost of any additional travel they may decide to undertake. Geneva is one of the most central locations in Europe
with cheap, fast rail connections to France, Italy and a number of other European destinations.
Accommodation and expenses
To enable the program to run smoothly, participants will be housed in a centrally located 3½ star Geneva hotel, just metres from the
Palais Wilson (the original headquarters of the League of Nations, which currently houses the offices of the UN High Commissioner for
Human Rights). Most international organisations, railway station and town centre with the vieille ville (old town) are within easy walking
distance or a short tram ride away.
Accommodation will be in large, double occupancy rooms, with attached private bathroom, kitchenette and full facilities (telephone,
TV, fridge, etc). Some participants may be allocated single rooms depending on the gender composition within the group. Specific
room types cannot be requested. Buffet breakfast is included. There is no restaurant in the hotel for lunch or dinner. Participants will be
responsible for any additional hotel costs (eg. telephone, laundry, etc), and for their own living expenses in Geneva (see estimate below).
The hotel provides a free wireless HotSpot connection through Swisscom, but there are no printing facilities.
Course materials will be supplied on USB drive, and students are therefore expected to have their own laptop or similar device that can
access PDF files from a USB drive. Remember an international adaptor for your charger.
An accommodation fee of A$1,700 (non-refundable) will be payable directly to the ANU College of Law. Please note that this is a special
group rate and represents a substantial savings on the hotel’s best available individual rates.
Administration fee
All participants will be required to pay an administrative fee of A$100 (non-refundable) directly to the Law School to cover a number of
program expenses (course materials, opening dinner, UN visit fee, etc.).

These estimates do not include any additional travel a participant may decide to undertake. Estimated living expenses in Geneva are
based on a ‘normal’, comfortable, but not lavish lifestyle.
Selection criteria
1. Participation in the program is restricted to LLB, LLB/combined degree or JD students, and students undertaking a graduate course
of study specialising in International Law.
2. Only applicants who have completed at least a semester-length general International Law course will be considered.
3. 15 of the 20 places in the program are initially reserved for ANU students; the remaining 5 places will be available to both ANU and
non-ANU students.
4. Priority will be given to later year LLB, LLB/combined degree or JD students (e.g. students who have less than 12 semester-length
courses (law and/or non-law) left to complete after the end of the current academic year).
5. Preference will be given to students who have completed additional international law electives.
6. Additionally, academic merit and chronology (the order in which applications are received) will be taken into account in selecting
applicants.
Important note on travel insurance
The attention of participants is drawn to the limitations in travel and medical insurance cover provided by the University (full details are
provided in the ‘Terms and Conditions’). The cost of any private travel/medical insurance to complement the University insurance for
periods not covered by it has not been included in the cost estimates above.
Non-ANU (cross-institutional) students
Please note that as a cross-institutional student you will NOT be covered by the ANU insurance cover; accordingly you will need to take
out private travel insurance for the entire duration of your trip and add the resulting additional cost to the estimates provided above.

Accommodation (payable to the Law School):
A $400 non-refundable accommodation deposit will be due no later than Monday 6 July 2015. A second payment of $650 will be due
on Monday 31 August 2015. The balance of the accommodation cost ($650) will be payable on Monday 19 October 2015.

fridge, etc). Some participants may be allocated single rooms depending on the gender composition within the group. Specific room
types cannot be requested. Buffet breakfast is included.
It is imperative that participants arrive in Geneva by Saturday 23 January 2016 at the latest. As accommodation is booked as a
group, students will be charged accommodation costs from 23 January to 5 February (inclusive), irrespective of individual arrival or
departure dates, or of absences from Geneva in the course of the program (e.g. travelling on week-ends). Check out date is Saturday
6 February 2016.
Accommodation at the hotel may be available prior to 23 January or beyond 6 February, but must be arranged separately through
direct arrangement between the student and the hotel. It will not be included in the pre-paid accommodation fee, and is likely to be
substantially more expensive (as group accommodation rates are based on discounted double share). A Youth Hostel is situated right
next to the hotel’s back entrance at 28 rue Rothschild, and is likely to provide cheaper accommodation before and after the program
dates.
Participants will be responsible for any additional hotel costs they may incur (eg. telephone, drinks, laundry, accommodation outside the
program dates).
Airfares
Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements. The lowest airfare included in the summary of program costs is based on
low-season discounts.
Additional expenses
The sample budget is for information purposes only, and based on the best information currently available. It does not include additional
(personal) expenses or additional travel insurance.
Participants will be responsible for the cost of any additional travel they may decide to undertake before, after or during the program.
Materials
Course materials will be supplied on USB drive, and students are expected to have their own laptop or similar device that can access
PDF files from a USB drive.
Enrolment
Please note that application for the course and acceptance of a place in the program does not enrol the student in the course. Students
should enrol in the summer course via the Law School Office after they have been accepted in the program, and once summer school
enrolment has opened.
Insurance
ANU students will be insured by ANU Insurance for the duration of the program (23 January 2016 to 6 February 2016) as well as a total
of 8 days personal leisure travel, either side of the program. For example, 3 days before and 5 days after. If your travel extends beyond
this period (or you are a non-ANU student) you will need to purchase additional insurance at your own expense.
Separate insurance cover for the periods not covered by ANU Insurance as outlined above can be purchased online at
