At the Y we continue to
dedicate our efforts to
improving your member
experience at all our locations. Ultimately our goal is
to ensure that you have access to the programs and
services you need most to keep you and your family active
and healthy. This includes continuing to raise as much
contributed funding as we can so financial assistance is
available for all.
Any given day at the Y you will see our members gathering
for social interaction at the Welcome Center, taking swim
lessons in the pool or enjoying a group exercise class.
Every time I walk into the Newtown or Fairless Hills Y’s I
am energized by all of the burgeoning activity as we strive
to do our best to improve the quality of life for those living
in our community.
In the summer, the Y becomes even more active with
summer day camp and other sports programs. While the
summer brings more fun and sunshine, it is also a good
time to reflect upon aquatics safety. Every day 10 people
in the United States die from accidental drowning in pools
of which 1 in 5 are children 14 and younger. Children ages
1 to 4 are most at risk and have the highest drowning
rates.
Research by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has
found that learning swim skills helps to prevent accidental
drowning deaths and significantly can reduce the risk for
children aged 1 to 4. The Y’s Aquatics Program helps to
prevent drowning risk by providing pertinent information
about water safety and basic swim instruction. So, if you
haven’t already, learn more about the Y’s swim programs
and how they can help your family to stay both active and
safe.
Because educating the community about swim safety
is of utmost importance to us, we are giving out
Aquatics Safety magnets. Pick up your free magnet at
either our Fairless Hills or Newtown Branches. Hang
it on your refrigerator and share with friends and
family.
As we get further into 2015, we continue to be committed
to our vision of building a new Y in the near future in
Fairless Hills. We are getting closer towards that developed
vision and we will share that with the community as soon
as we are able. Until then, enjoy your summer and stay
safe.

Building BRIDGES is designed to meet the needs of the whole
child. It is NOT the same teaching and learning that occurs
during the school day, but a different approach to engage
students with the teacher, school and community. Believing that
“perfect practice” makes perfect, our Building BRIDGES staff
will use a repeat and practice strategy that is most effective for
students considered at risk for academic failure and children
with Special Needs.
YES I CAN!
is a YMCA After School Program for
Students with Special Needs of all Ages
Tuesdays and Thursdays | 4:00 to 6:30pm.
$45 per week. Space is very limited. Please enroll now!
After school programs can provide important benefits to all
students, including those who have learning, developmental and
physical disabilities. Students in after-school programs have
better grades and behavior, increased self-esteem and more
positive attitudes about school.
From 4:00 to 5:00pm: Children will have the opportunity
to work on their gross motor, fine motor, communication,
socialization, and coordination skills to learn a new sport each
week.
From 5:00 to 6:00pm: Children will receive one-on-one
academic assistance from a Special Education Teacher. Tutoring
will be provided in the children’s most significant area of need
as well as with homework/school work and promote MOP
(Motivation, Organization, and fight against Procrastination).
Mondays are for Reading: Emphasis will be focused
on book handling, comprehension, fluency and vocabulary
development.
Wednesdays are for Math: We will provide tutoring in
math concepts, play math games and introduce activities to help
create confident math students and creative problem solvers.
Fridays are for Science: No boring worksheets here!
Your children will have fun learning about the science of wind
and water and everything else under the sun.

YMCA Teen Leaders Club | Ages 11-14
Brings teens together to develop group leadership skills,
as well as allowing individuals to grow by building a
healthy spirit, mind and body. Teens meet on a monthly
basis, in addition to other activities and/or volunteer
opportunities. One of the unique traits of Teen Leaders
Club is that everything is run by the teens themselves.
Even the meetings are run by the CAB (Club Advisory
Board), consisting of a group of teens that are chosen by
their peers to plan and organize meetings and monthly
events. Opportunity for teens to learn about leadership,
get involved with the community and have fun with
peers. Essentially, the club is what the group makes of
it. Under the supervision of the Y staff and volunteers,
teens can make Leaders Club exactly what they want it to
be! Enrollment starts September 1st for the 2015-2016
school year.

YMCA 7th Grade Initiative | Free YMCA Membership
Lower Bucks Family YMCA is pleased to offer 7th grade students
a free membership to support and encourage youth to live healthy
lifestyles and make responsible choices. To join, bring a school ID
or report card and a parent or guardian to the Lower Bucks Family
YMCA Welcome Center.
Research shows that 7th grade is a critical time in a young
person’s life when exposure to risk factors greatly increases.
Risk factors are conditions or influences that have been shown
to increase the likelihood for unhealthy behaviors including
substance abuse, delinquency, teen pregnancy, school drop-out
and violence. It is also during the early teen years that youth
begin to distance themselves from family and positive support
systems.
We provide youth with the knowledge, skills, character and
passion to be more active in the community as adults.
