A message from our Board of Directors Chairperson: We are so proud to report the exciting growth and support the Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic received in 2014! We strengthened collaborative partnerships with local organizations, enjoyed another very successful Silver Bell Soirée, celebrated our remarkable volunteers and donors, contributed to the education of young minds, and continued to provide excellent out-patient health care to our hard-working neighbors. During our 17th annual Silver Bell Soirée, the Clinic honored Sister Betty Lyons for her unerring compassion and tireless work to provide health care to the underserved in the Lafayette community. Sr. Lyons was instrumental in the creation of the Community Pharmacy and her vision and drive continue to benefit our Clinic today. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Lourdes Foundation. Their outstanding support of the Community Pharmacy and dedication to serving the Lafayette Community is an inspiration that invigorates our mission to provide health care to the working uninsured. The Community Pharmacy provided over $2,700,000 worth of prescription medications at no cost to patients in 2014, and will continue their exemplary work in 2015. 2014 saw the implementation of the exciting new Clinic program, CHAMP. The fitness and nutrition program is designed to help female patients get their chronic conditions under control through exercise and healthy eating. CHAMP is the result of a generous grant and collaboration with Junior League of Lafayette. We are so grateful to the gifted and charitable ladies of Junior League of Lafayette! Another remarkable Clinic partner that contributed to the health and wellbeing of our patients in 2014 was Susan G. Komen’s Acadiana Affiliate. 135 patients received free mammogram screenings because of the Susan G. Komen grant awarded to the Clinic! The Clinic was also a powerful educational resource in 2014. The LSU Dental Hygiene program calls the Clinic home, and their talented students provide free dental hygiene services during the day, gaining valuable training and expertise they will use in their professional careers. University of Louisiana at Lafayette also works closely with LCHCC. Their students utilize the Clinic by shadowing health care providers, screening patients, and working in medical records. These volunteer hours provide an invaluable opportunity for students to experience and work in a professional health care environment, and to give back to their community. As 2014 was the first year to implement the Affordable Care Act programs, we saw detailed reports which investigated the growth of health care coverage in Louisiana. According to research from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, an estimated 166,000 impoverished adults remain uninsured in Louisiana. We have found that the demographic which the Clinic serves has once again fallen through the cracks of government health care programs, which is why it is more important now, more than ever, that LCHCC continues to serve the working uninsured of Lafayette Parish. We will accomplish this through the generous support of our health care partners: Heart Hospital of Lafayette, LabCorp, Laborde Diagnostics, Lafayette General Medical Center, Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Preferred Anatomic Pathology Services, Regional Medical Center, University Hospital and Clinics, and Women & Children’s Hospital, and our remarkable donors and volunteers.
