Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer 2001 Second Street Northwest, Watertown SD 57201 Web site: www.lcoorwatertown.org; Office: (605) 886-2696 Resurrection of Our Lord Sunday, April 5, 2015 *Indicates congregation should stand as able Prelude *The Easter Litany Pastor: As we gather here this blessed morn, we come knowing that the entire world was changed in the span of that first Holy Week. We have heard the shouts of hosannas at the arrival of the King turn into cries for his execution. But those cries were not the final act. The final act was Christ’s resurrection: “Christ is risen!” People: He is risen indeed! Pastor: We have seen the loyalty of the first disciples quickly turn into betrayal. But betrayal is not the last word. The last word is, “Christ is risen!” People: He is risen indeed! Pastor: We have seen the sky torn apart and the world go dark. But darkness could not be the world’s final sentence. Our sentence brought freedom and life when the darkness was overcome by the Light of Easter morning. “Christ is risen!” People: He is risen indeed! Pastor: Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Pastor: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we raise our voices together to worship the risen Lord. People: He is risen indeed! Amen. Alleluia! *Processional Hymn “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” Jesus Christ is ris'n today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heav'nly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky he's king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as his love; Alleluia! Praise him, all you heav'nly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! #365 Public Domain Welcome and Announcements Confession and Forgiveness Let us confess our sins, trusting that God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence is kept for reflection. Faithful and just God, we confess that we are captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We have not loved our sisters and brothers as you have first loved us. Forgive us, God of mercy. Let your Holy Spirit work in us to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the abundant life given in Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent the Son to atone for our sins. In the name of + Jesus Christ, I announce to you that your sins are forgiven. Let the perfect love of God cast out fear, fill you with joy, and inspire you to live for others. Amen. Hymn “Thine Is the Glory” #376 Thine is the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry thou o'er death hast won! Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes Where thy body lay. (Refrain) Thine is the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; Endless is the vict'ry thou o'er death hast won! Lo, Jesus meets thee, risen from the tomb! Lovingly he greets thee, scatters fear and gloom; Let his church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for the Lord now liveth; Death hath lost its sting! (Refrain) No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife; Make us more than conqu'rors, through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan To thy home above. (Refrain) Public Domain Prayer of the Day O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. First Reading Acts 10:34-43 34 Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ — he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Second Reading 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you — unless you have come to believe in vain. 3For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them — though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. Special Music (7:00) “How Beautiful” by Twila Paris Darian and Robbyn Givens (8:30/10:30) “Oh, God, Beyond All Praising” music by Gustav Holst, text by Michael Perry, arr. by Dan Forrest Praise & Rejoice Choir; Directed by Arlene Brandt-Jenson Accompanied by Brass Instruments and Mary Wika on piano O God beyond all praising, we worship You today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; for we can only wonder at ev’ry gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: we lift our hearts before you and wait upon Your word, we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord. For we can only wonder at ev’ry gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: for Christ, your gift from heaven, from death has set us free, and we through him are given the final victory. Then here, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring, that we who know your favor may serve you as our King; and whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, we’ll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: to marvel at Your beauty and glory in your ways, make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise. Children’s Sermon *Gospel Hymn “Hallelujah! Jesus Lives!” vs. 1 & 5 #380 Hallelujah! Jesus lives! He is now the Living One; from the gloomy halls of death Christ, the conqueror, has gone, bright forerunner to the skies of his people, yet to rise. Hallelujah! Angels, sing! Join with us in hymns of praise. Let your chorus swell the strain Which our feebler voices raise: Glory to our God above and on earth his peace and love! Public Domain Gospel Reading Mark 16:1-8 When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3They had been saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" 4When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you." 8So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Sermon Hymn of the Day “I Know That My Redeemer Lives!” I know that my Redeemer lives! What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, he lives, who once was dead; he lives, my ever-living head! He lives triumphant from the grave; he lives eternally to save; He lives exalted, throned above; he lives to rule his church in love. He lives to grant me rich supply; he lives to guide me with his eye; He lives to comfort me when faint; he lives to hear my soul's complaint. He lives to silence all my fears; he lives to wipe away my tears; He lives to calm my troubled heart; he lives all blessings to impart. Pastor Chris Matson vs. 1-4 #619 Public Domain *Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Offering *Offertory Response “Christ Is Risen! Alleluia!” vs. 1 & 4 #382 Christ is risen! Alleluia! Risen our victorious head! Sing his praises! Alleluia! Christ is risen from the dead!
