University of Victoria Community Leadership Awards
Bill Anderson
Bill Anderson brings over 38 years’ experience providing accounting and advisory
services to a variety of organizations and businesses. He was a success as a CA and
Partner in Deloitte and KPMG. Even before retirement, he turned his formidable skills to
working with many Vancouver Island organizations, including the UVic Gustavson School
of Business.
Bill has been instrumental in linking UVic with the community, and is in student demand
as an inspirational mentor. He has been involved in the Innovation Centre for
Entrepreneurs (ICE), and tirelessly recruits volunteers from the business community for
ICE and various Gustavson activities.
Michelle Colussi
Michelle Colussi is a member of the Canadian Center for Community Renewal and
Transition Town in Victoria. In 2013 she was a community fellow at the Centre for
Cooperative and Community-Based Economy- University of Victoria. Michelle has
worked in education, recreation, with youth at risk, in mental health, the arts and as a
board and business trainer. Michelle has an extensive background in rural development
projects, multi-stakeholder facilitation and board/leadership development in the nonprofit sector. Michelle is currently focused on various projects related to community
resilience, social enterprise development, and facilitating Transition and Collective
Impact workshops.
Bruce Parisian
Bruce Parisian, Executive Director of the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, has linked
the University of Victoria and the Greater Victoria Community to benefit the public. In
particular, he has benefitted the urban Indigenous People of our community, by
partnering with UVic on the President’s Advisory Council on Indigenous Education, the
First People’s House project, academic leadership programs in Public Administration,
community-based research, and an Aboriginal library, the first of its kind in Canada. His
vision, courage, and constant commitment have brought to UVic and the Greater
Victoria Community the services and opportunities that our growing Indigenous
communities require to flourish.
The Rotary Community Leadership Awards
Peter Malcolm
Over the last 50 years Peter Malcolm has demonstrated throughout his professional and
community activities to be a caring and supportive community leader.
From early days of coaching T-ball to a term as Mayor of Sidney Peter knows and
appreciates this community. He has devoted much of his personal time to volunteer on
many boards and committees for organizations in Victoria. Currently he is the Chair of
Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation and a past Board and Committee
member for Victoria Foundation. He is current Chair of Uplands Probus Club. He is also
known as the quiet philanthropist, giving both generously and anonymously to many
local organizations annually.
Ann Moskow
Ann Moskow applies her extensive expertise, experience and insight to helping
organizations make change happen and produce the intended outcomes.
Ann helps organizations work with their multiple stakeholders and partners to resolve
challenges, make the most of opportunities and achieve soundly governed, wellmanaged, realistic, sustainable results that are acceptable to and benefit all parties.
Having worked in and with the public, academic, not-for-profit and private sectors for
more than 30 years, Ann has gained a sound understanding of their different and similar
challenges. As a highly experienced senior management consultant, Ann works with
boards, executives, managers and staff to focus on leadership and action to set
direction, resolve issues and meet realistic outcome expectations.
Ann is an excellent facilitator, analyst, communicator and trainer. She has developed
and delivered training courses on change management, organization design, and project
management and co-developed an advanced course on organization design and change
management for consultants in an international consulting company. She has also
taught business communications at the University of Victoria.
Ann is known for her ability to build on her clients' previous experience, processes and
‘intellectual property’ and apply them successfully to current projects. She works with
their cultures to ensure that the transitions are well-grounded and well-accepted,
particularly in multi-party relationships.
Ann brings both a strategic focus and an attention to detail to her services.
More specifically, Ann brings both expertise and a very significant track record of
results. She is pre-qualified by the government of British Columbia in the areas of
change management and transition, strategic planning, business services analysis,
project management, communications, and facilitation. Ann is also a Certified
Management Consultant (CMC) and is Vice-Chair of the CMC Chapter for Vancouver
Island.
Ann is involved in her community having served on and been an advisor to many boards.
Lisa Nye
As an entrepreneur with her own business, Lisa is demonstrating effective leadership
skills, facilitating dialogues, developing practical strategies, creating achievable plans,
collaborating and engaging with communities. Lisa also has 28 years of experience in a
variety of areas within the public sector and has acquired skills and competencies as an
effective leader. Lisa has received both the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Excellence
in the Public Service, in particular for her more than 15 years working with Aboriginal
communities, and the Metis Order of The Sash. Lisa has served as a Director of the
Mount St Mary Hospital Foundation for the past six years and is also an active volunteer
with the Institute of Public Administration. Lisa’s collaborative approach helps to build
and sustain partnerships and effective relationships in all endeavors.
Kelly Reid
Kelly Reid has been Director of Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) services at
Island Health since 2010. Kelly’s career has included clinical positions with non profit
and government agencies as well as a variety of leadership positions in Victoria and
Vancouver Island. During his 20+ years of service, Kelly has strengthened community
services by collaboratively developing innovative evidence based programs including
housing, rehabilitation and assertive community treatment. Many services resulted
from community integration with local Police, Corrections, not for profit partners,
service users and family. Kelly’s direct community experience has informed his decision
making as a senior program leader.
Scott Treble
Staff Sergeant Scott Treble is a Saanich Police supervisor in the Community Engagement
Division. His police leadership supports community-based programs and services such as
School Liaison, Crime Prevention, Bike Section, Block Watch, Volunteers, Reserve Police,
Seniors and Diversity. In this role, he is co-chair of the Greater Victoria Police Diversity
Advisory Committee. Scott is a University of Regina graduate and former RCMP officer
who served the communities of Gold River and Sidney/North Saanich before joining
Saanich Police. His community service leadership includes Big Brothers Big Sisters,
Scouts Canada and the 2013-2014 Community Development Program with Leadership
Victoria.
The Vancity Youth Leadership Award
Leat Ahrony
Leat Ahrony looks at the world with a curious eye. Her sustainable values combined
with business ethics put her ideas and projects into action! Born and raised in Taiwan,
Leat understood the importance of meaningful culture & respect. At 18, she journeyed
across the world to pursue her BA at UVic’s Gustavson school of Business. Change &
uncertainty motivates her to face new challenges, and learn new approaches. She likes
to garden in her spare time and provides mentorship for international students. Leat
continues to progress and promote her enthusiasm and passion for a local & global
sustainable community, cultural diversity, and leadership.
Kate Fleming
Born and raised in Vancouver, Kate Fleming moved to Victoria in 2008 in order to pursue
a degree In Political Science and Social Justice Studies. Today, Kate is the Director of
Outreach at Community Micro Lending. In her years at the organization she has helped
to create the organization's youth micro lending program and self-employment training
designed for women who’ve experienced trauma. In addition to her work at Community
Micro Lending, Kate is the program coordinator at women in need, providing support to
women on the path between crisis and wellness. Her time at both of these organizations
has enabled her to pursue her passion for social justice, entrepreneurship, gender
equality and community economic development.
Alex Harned
Alex is a lover of community, and a proponent of resilient local economy. In early 2012,
she undertook the talk of growing a farmers market in her community of Oaklands. She
was inspired to create a space where community could gather to celebrate local food,
art, music, and diversity. Today, the Oaklands Sunset Market supports over 100 vendors,
showcases over 60 musicians, feeds 30 low income families (through the BCAFM
Nutrition Coupon Program), and hosts thousands of patrons who support the market.
Alex is gregarious, passionate, and diligent in her commitment to the sustainability and
quality of the Oaklands Market.
Kevin Ram
As a current student with a passion for life, knowledge and creating change, Kevin Ram
shows strong admiration for his peers, specifically those living with Inflammatory Bowel
Disease. He works for non-profit organizations (IDEAS) in which he can develop new
care practices and influence change for betterment in their standard of living. As a role
model for this community, he leads by example and recently completed a challenge to
become the first individual with a j-pouch to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, showcasing
that nothing is impossible. Not only this but as a student leader on campus, he strives
for increasing student engagement and participation in all recreational aspects to help
increase bodily awareness , stabilize mental attitudes and give students a voice in the
highly academic and pressurized environments of university.

Collaboration and Partnership
Michael Ravenhill
With over 25 years of management experience in the tourism and hospitality and real
estate development industry, Mike has extensive experience training Sales and Service
excellence to some of North America’s finest tourism and hospitality properties.
Michael’s passion for the tourism and hospitality industry is evident in his high impact
training seminars. His knowledge of the industry and terrific sense of humor along with
his dynamic training skills are always in great demand. He is also a firm believer in
developing new business ideas, expanding and restructuring existing businesses with a
strong emphasis on, strategic planning, customer service, sales and marketing.
In addition to his business acumen, Mike is known for his commitment to giving back to
a wide variety of charitable organizations both locally and nationally, Mike started as a
volunteer for the David Foster Foundation and shortly thereafter became a director of
the board and then President, at which time he took the foundation from a provincial
charity to a national foundation assisting families throughout Canada. In January 2009
Mike was appointed Chief Executive Officer. Mike and his wife Cassandra and their two
daughters divide their time between Phoenix, Arizona and his home town of Victoria
British Columbia.
Maureen Sawa
An award-winning librarian, Maureen Sawa is the CEO of the Greater Victoria Public
Library. Maureen joined GVPL from Hamilton, Ontario, where she developed Hamilton
Public Library’s spectacular Central Library renovation project, an innovative partnership
with the Hamilton Farmers’ Market. A firm believer in the power of ‘doing more with
more’, Maureen is known for her collaborative approach to library service and
community development. A former children’s librarian, Maureen is the author of two
critically acclaimed children’s books, ‘The Library Book’ and ‘Car Smarts’ (co-authored
with Phil Edmonston, the creator of the iconic Lemonaid Car Guides) and has extensive
experience in public relations. Maureen has spoken at numerous library conferences
across Canada and is particularly known for her popular ’12 Habits of Highly Successful
Librarians’ presentation.

through Coaching & Mentoring Award
Ingrid Bergmann
Ingrid supports senior and emerging leaders in the public and private sector to make a
positive impact with staff and colleagues as well as in their communities within BC.
Since 2002, Ingrid has been an active member of the BCHRMA and the Vancouver Island
Coaches Association. She is a highly respected Certified Executive Coach, Certified
Human Resource Practitioner and a Professional Certified Coach with the International
Coach Federation. She contributed as a volunteer mentor/coach for BCHRMA,
Leadership Victoria and, as a distinguished alumnus, Royal Roads Executive Coaching
program.
Ingrid is valued by the people and teams she coaches, the organizations who employ
them and by her colleagues and peers in the profession.
Peter Elkins
Peter Elkins is very active in community economic development in western Canada with
several projects in the works to support the future of local living economies, including
the Capital Investment Network and Space. He also organizes Meet Ups for apssiring
social entrepreneurs, and recently launched Kick Victoria, a brand new initiative in
partnership with Seattle Kick, that provides entrepreneurial education and incubation of
ideas to support both entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs.
Peter volunteers with Simon Fraser University’s Community Economic Development
Program, University of Victoria Innovation Centre for Entrepreneurship Canadian Youth
Business Foundation and Accelerate Tectoria as a mentor to startup entrepreneurs.
Mark Townsend
After playing football at Simon Fraser University in the early 1980’s followed by a brief
stint in the CFL, Mark Townsend took a break from the game before beginning his
coaching career in Victoria in 1997. That year he began coaching his son’s youth team in
Victoria, and he coached in the community and then at Mount Douglas High School for
the past 17 years. Under his guidance the Rams have appeared in the AAA Subway Bowl
the past four years, winning championships in 2011 – 2013.
Mark and his wife currently live in Victoria, BC while their two sons attend the University
of Calgary. He works at BC Assessment, and visits Hawaii, the family’s favourite
vacations spot, as often as possible.
Leadership Victoria Alumni Award
Maja Tait
Maja Tait graduated from the Leadership Victoria program in 2006, shortly after
relocating with her husband Alex to Sooke. Drawn by the community’s stunning natural
setting and unique history and charm, it was a natural fit for the newlyweds.
Maja was raised in the hamlet of Bragg Creek, Alberta and has been a dedicated
community volunteer since her early childhood with organizations like Girl Guides of
Canada, the Victoria Women’s Sexual Assault Centre, the Craigarroch Castle Museum
Society and the Sooke Harbourside Lions Club.
Building on the successes of the Leadership Victoria program, Maja has advanced her
career in property management and with strong encouragement from her husband, she
was elected to serve Sooke as a municipal councillor in 2008. Maja was re-elected in
2011 and elected as Mayor in 2014.

The 2015 Victoria Leadership Awards Ceremony will be held
