Lake Elkhorn Families~
Like so many times this year, our Lake Elkhorn students continue to be recognized for their hard work and accomplishments. First, many of our students have artwork on display at the Columbia Mall through next week, so please check it out. Also, the chorus assessment and adjudication took place this week and I was fortunate enough to see the 6th grade chorus perform beautifully! 7th and 8th graders will be performing this afternoon at Long Reach High School.
Several individuals have stood out over the last couple of weeks, also. Lucas Hines was selected to represent Boy Scouts of America at the White House and got to meet the President of the United States! What a great honor for Lucas! Next, Lake Elkhorn has three Pinalists for the Maryland Letters About Literature writing contest! The contest involves writing a letter to an author of a book about how that book has affected your life and thinking. The three Pinalists are three of Ms. Carns’ students: Aamina Bora, James Dorsey, and Cassie Woolverton, all 6th graders. They will be honored at an awards ceremony at the Enoch Pratt Free Library Central Branch in Baltimore on April 25 at 11am.
In addition, one of Ms. France-‐Kelly’s students, Amari Jangha, won honorable mention for poetry in the Howard County Reading Council Young Author’s Contest. Amari will be invited to a reception to be recognized. Finally, Pive Lake Elkhorn students received prizes for the 30/30 Reading Challenge sponsored by the Maryland State Education Association: Ella Harris (Ms. McCullough), Lens Galstad (Ms. Dellinger), David Afforo (Ms. Carns), Darrick Smith (Ms. Williams), and Julia Looper (Ms. McCullough). Thank you to all students who persevered by reading 30 minutes per day and logging their progress.
Finally, thank you to all the families who came out to support the Lake Elkhorn staff play basketball versus the Cradlerock staff. A good time was had by all!

Closing Ceremony will be held on Monday, June 15, 2015 at 6 pm. It
will be located in the cafeteria. We ask that all students report to the gymnasium
by 5:15 pm. The dress code for this event is business casual, not formal.
Students wearing inappropriate clothing will not be allowed to attend. If a young
lady is wearing a dress with thin straps or no straps, we ask that they wear a
sweater to cover up. After the closing ceremony, there will be light refreshments
located in the gymnasium.
DEBATE TEAM
The Lake Elkhorn Middle School Debate team had another successful season. The
debate resolution was, "The state of Maryland should ban the use of plastic bags and the
point of sale." The debate team went against two other schools on this topic, once for the
resolution and once against it. The students did a very good job in representing the
school. The team that was for the resolution won their debate and the team that was
against the resolution lost. So it was a split for our team from the school. The students
on the debate team will do a demonstration of their skills at the Enrichment Fair on May

Mark your calendars! The Enrichment Fair is coming on Thursday May 7th, from 6:00 8:30. There will be many demonstrations of the different Enrichment Seminars. The
Actors Guild will be presenting their production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", the
Debate Team will do a mock debate, there will be music numbers by band, strings, and
chorus, there will be other demonstrations by other Seminar groups and other groups
from throughout the school. Please come and see the wonderful things that are going on

Early College Program Registration
Parents of 8th graders: the Early College Program is still recruiting
students.
This program provides students with a supportive and scholarly pathway to be successful in college
credit-bearing courses during their Junior and Senior years in high school. The Early College
program is designed to provide students with courses that will enrich their high school experience
and support their success in achieving 30 college credits by the time they graduate from OMHS.
Students could also continue at Howard Community College the following year, earning an
Associate’s Degree a year ahead of the usual schedule.
Science focus: Prepare for careers in science, pharmaceuticals, medicine and others
Education focus: Prepare for careers in math or science education

TEACHERS ARE HEROES
Do you know a teacher who has gone above and beyond his or her job description and
instilled a lifelong love for learning?
ABC2 is proud to introduce Teachers are Heroes, a 10-month program highlighting one Maryland school
teacher (K-12) each month who has gone above and beyond his or her job description and instilled a
lifelong love for learning in Maryland students. The program runs August 2014 through June 2015.
ABC2, in partnership with MECU - Baltimore's Credit Union, will award the monthly selected teachers a
$250 check to use toward classroom supplies along with a plaque acknowledging their achievement.
Winners will be highlighted on ABC2 News and abc2news.com throughout the school year.
NOTE: If you nominate a deserving teacher or even re-nominate a teacher who has made a positive
impact in your community you’ll be qualified to win two tickets to dine & cruise aboard the Spirit of

Take Our Daughters/Sons to Work Form

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Take Our Daughters/Sons to Work is a public education program sponsored by the Ms. Foundation
for Women which was lunched in 1993. This year Take Our Daughters/Sons to Work will be on Thursday,
April 23, 2015. The Howard County Public School System supports this program which encourages girls/
boys to go to work with adult mentors. It is a great opportunity for students to investigate future careers.
We want to ensure a productive and educational day for all students. All grade levels will have
regular classes on Thursday. Students who will be absent on Thursday need to make the appropriate
arrangements with their teachers. If your child is going to observe an adult mentor on Thursday, please

school to keep accurate attendance records. This form needs to be completed in order for your child to
be marked present.

Recreation & Parks has established local baseball teams for several age groups in your community. We are writing to invite you and
your neighbors to participate in the Columbia Baseball League (CBL). Come help us bring baseball back to your community. First time
and experienced players are welcome. Thanks to support from the Howard County Public School System, permits for your local school
fields were issued to Recreation & Parks. We recognize some families could use a little extra assistance with the price of registration.
Recreation & Parks has a sliding scale for financial assistance program. Howard County residency is required for financial assistance.

The First Tee
A unique youth development program that teaches children and youth ages 7-14 core values and healthy habits through the game of
