School Lunch vs. Bagged Lunch

WE FEEL STRONGLY THAT SCHOOL LUNCH IS A GREAT
OPTION FOR YOUR FAMILY!
School lunch saves you money!
Bagged lunches cost an average of $3.50
School lunch only $2.00 for elementary,
$2.25 for middle & high school
(Average savings: $1.38 daily = $6.90 per
week = $27.60 per month!)
Recent regulations have greatly
increased the variety, quantity, and
quality of fruits and vegetables!
Children choose one fruit/vegetable
serving if they wish, or up to four
servings!
Breads and cereals are now whole-grain
rich, and therefore contain more intact
vitamins & minerals and fiber to keep kids
fueled and satisfied!
Our menus offer a variety of foods to
encourage those picky eaters to try
new things, and keep adventurous
eaters on their toes!
No added task of packing a lunch and
cleaning lunch containers. Just one less
thing on your to-do list!
School lunches (compared to
bagged lunches) have been
shown to contain more…
Fiber:
Nutrient found in whole grain, beans,
seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Fiber
aids in the prevention of heart disease &
many digestive problems. Fiber slows the
digestion of sugar, preventing blood
sugar spikes.
*Did you know?
1 cup of cooked black beans contains
60% of your daily fiber needs!
Vitamin A
Found in red, orange, and yellow fruits
and vegetables, dark leafy greens, eggs,
liver, and milk. Active vitamin A comes
from animal sources, sources from plants
(carotenoids) are activated in the body.
Both sources help preserve vision, fight
infections, maintain healthy skin and
bones and regulate cell growth and
division.
*Did you know?
One medium baked sweet potato
provides enough vitamin A for an entire
day!
Calcium
Found in dairy, green leafy vegetables, canned
sardines and salmon, enriched sources like
cereal, soy milk, and tofu. Calcium is used in
the body by muscles, blood vessels, and in the
secretion of hormones and enzymes. It is the
mineral which makes bones strong. If we do
not consume enough calcium from food, our
body extracts it from bone, making them weak
and prone to fracture.
*Head for the Outdoors!
The body needs Vitamin D to absorb calcium,
so have play time outside in the sun for at
least 15 minutes every day!
Protein
Macronutrient made up of amino acids needed
for growth and development. Meats, fish,
eggs, beans, nuts & nut butters, soy products,
and dairy are great sources of protein.
*Fun Fact!
Cows’ milk has eight times more protein than
rice or almond milk!
