Recognize that you are a sinner. “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” (Romans 3:23). “As the Scriptures say, ‘No one is righteous—not even one’” (Romans 3:10). Because everyone is a sinner, no one deserves eternal life with God in heaven. In addition, no one can work hard enough to earn this life. Instead, God gives eternal life to everyone who believes that Jesus Christ is His Son. Before you can appreciate what Jesus has done for you, you need to recognize that you are a sinner in need of God’s forgiveness. If you never acknowledge this, you will never receive God’s forgiveness for your sins. And you will never enter into heaven. 2. Ask Jesus to forgive you. “Yet now He has reconciled you to Himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, He has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault” (Colossians 1:22). If you recognize that you are a sinner, then you may be ready to ask Jesus to forgive you. Do you believe that Jesus is the eternal Son of God, who died to pay for your sins? If you do, and you have never thanked Christ for dying for you, thank him right now in a simple prayer. Pray, “Lord, I thank you for paying for the sins I have committed. I give my life to you. Teach me the right way to live. Amen.” Dear Friend, We care about you. The Ashland Care Center (ACC) is happy to help you, and would like you to know a little more about us. ACC deals with the concerns of women and men, believing that every parent has the right to whatever help is needed to bring their child into the world. ACC listens, offers guidance, and draws on existing community resources for additional help. If you have just discovered that you are pregnant, we know you are faced with many new and tough decisions. You may be feeling overwhelmed and afraid. We are here to help you to plan for your future and the future of your child. Here is a list of ACC’s services and other resources to help you better prepare for your needs and those of your baby. We hope you find this information useful. You are not alone—we are here for YOU! If you have believed in Christ now for the first time, write your name and today’s date on the blank lines as a record of the time of your salvation. And we would love to hear of your good news! Please call us or let us know the next time you’re at ACC. We would love to answer any questions you may have, and help you in your new life in Christ! Name: __________________________________________________________ Date: ___________________________________________________________ Now, turn away from your sins. “Those who have been born into God’s family do not sin, because God’s life is In them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God” (1John 3:9). As a Christian, you may sin from time to time. But you should not continue to live a sinful lifestyle. Putting your faith in Jesus means that you are willingly turning away from your old sinful nature. It also means that you are living to please God out of a grateful heart for redeeming you. Spend time in the Word of God (the Bible) and in prayer. We would love to give you a Bible if you do not have one. God’s word is “a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105) . 4 29 HOW TO KNOW JESUS PERSONALLY God wants each of us to experience a life that has meaning, direction, love, and peace. God makes this kind of life possible through a personal relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ. But before you accept Jesus as your Savior, here are five truths that will help you understand God’s desire for you: 1. 2. 3. God has a plan for your life. “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven” (John 3:27). God created you and has good plans for your life. To know those plans, you must know God personally. God’s plan gives meaning. “Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). Many people seek meaning and purpose for their life. But they never find it because they look for meaning in the wrong things and the wrong people. When you follow God’s plans for your life, the most important of which is to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you will find meaning and purpose in all that you do. God’s plan gives direction. “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life’” (John 8:12). Without God’s direction, you may not know what to do with your life. You may try a lot of things, hoping to find meaning in each one. But if you have God in your life, He will lead you and show you how to make your life count for Him and His Kingdom. 4. God’s plan brings peace. “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27). When you follow Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you will be at peace with God. You will also be filled with God’s peace. So when troubles come, you will be able to have peace as you endure hardships. 5. God’s plan is for you to live with him in heaven. “For God loved the world [you!] so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish [spend eternity in hell] but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Before Adam and Eve sinned (Genesis 3), they had a good relationship with God. Therefore, they were not ashamed to come into God’s presence. But after they sinned, their relationship with God changed, and they were ashamed to come into God’s physical presence. Sin had separated them and the entire human race—including you— from God. But God did not want sin to keep people from having a relationship with Him. So He provided a way in which people could be cleansed of their sins and live with Him in heaven forever. He gave His only Son, Jesus, as the perfect payment for everyone’s sins. 28 UTILITY An unplanned pregnancyASSISANCE can raise many unanswered questions: What about school? What about my career? How soon do I have to decide? Will I have to go through it alone? How do I get my life back? Am I ready to have a child? “We recognize the right of the individual, married or single, to be free from unwarranted governmental intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as the decision whether to bear or beget* a child. That right necessarily includes the right of a woman to decide whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.” -U.S. Supreme Court, January 22, 1973 *Beget: to procreate or generate offspring The Supreme Court has given you the right to choose. It is our job to empower you with the information you need to make an informed choice. WE CAN HELP. . . Because pregnancy isn’t just about your rights. . . EARN WHILE YOU LEARN “BABY BUCKS” UTILITY ASSISANCE Marriage has been studied many times, and those studies show there are many advantages to being married rather than living together. Here are just a few: Married people. . . . . .are happier!¹ . . .are better off financially.² . . .are more successful at work.² . . .have a better sex life.³ . . .fight less. 4 . . .tend to be better parents. 5 Earn While You Learn (EWYL) is an incentive based program that serves our pregnant and parenting clients. It is designed to help provide clients with the resources needed while learning how to care for themselves and their baby. Clients receive “Baby Bucks” to spend at the Baby Boutique every time they participate in one of a variety of educational activities. The Baby Bucks Program is available to all ACC clients throughout their pregnancy up to the baby’s first birthday. We encourage both moms and dads to participate! Living together outside of marriage (sometimes called cohabitation) has also been studied. It has been found to have many downsides or disadvantages, including those listed below: Partners living together are. . . . . .twice as likely to have affairs. 6 . . .more likely to get an STD. 7 . . .more likely to break up. 8 . . .more likely to live in poverty. 9 . . .more likely to have children with emotional and behavioral problems. . . .less likely to marry and stay married. 11 -Church (bring in a bulletin) -Parenting with Purpose Class -MOPS meetings It’s about love. -Parenting Support Mentoring (Catholic Charities) If you really love your partner, standing in front of witnesses and publicly declaring that love is the most powerful way to show that your commitment is real. Making daily sacrifices for each other, sharing mutual joy, and walking hand in hand for life is the best thing you can do, with and for your spouse— the best friend you will ever have. -Parenting Plus Classes -WIC -Birthing Classes -Breastfeeding Classes 1. Sorry, no layaway available. 8 10 25 THE FIRST CRITICAL WEEKS Five reasons you need the “Piece of Paper” “By living together, we can see how we’ll get along when we’re married.” True Commitment, as evidenced by marriage, is much more likely to endure through the tough times. “But we are committed to each other—that’s why we’re moving in!” Those who are really committed are willing to show it by going for that piece of paper. Commitment is more than just sharing living space. It is a deep and lasting bond that says “no matter what, I’m sticking with you.” “We’ll be less likely to end up in divorce court.” Full commitment in marriage decreases the likelihood of looking for the “loophole” in the arrangement. But living together before marriage greatly increases your chances of divorce. So much is happening to the embryo in a short period of time. The mother may not even have had a positive pregnancy test and yet her baby’s major organs are all formed and functioning in a primitive way. Foundation for every organ is established and beginning to develop by the 21st day after conception. Your baby’s tiny heart, about the size of a poppy seed, begins to beat around the 21st day of life. At 4 weeks after fertilization the basic structure for the entire central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) has formed. The baby is about 1/2 inch long from head to bottom at 6 weeks. Lungs begin to develop, tooth buds for “baby teeth” are taking shape in the jaw, and eyelids begin to form. At 8 weeks from conception the brain is growing rapidly. Each minute it produces almost 250,000 new neurons, and for the first time in development, the brain can make the muscles move on purpose. “But we’ll be happier. And we won’t feel tied down.” The marriage commitment results in a more complete and unreserved giving of oneself by both partners. Marriage offers better sexual and emotional fulfillment. Our children will be better off.” On the contrary, couples who live together are more likely to leave each other than those who marry, leaving kids smack in the middle of the break-up. Studies show that when it comes to finances, children whose parents cohabit are three times more likely to live in poverty than children of married couples. You will still need to do some work on creating an integrated and whole sense of “self” that will help you have healthier relationships. 19-1 A score in this range indicates an established sense of security in who you are and a confident perspective about your sense of personal wholeness. If this personal evaluation is ignored, you might find yourself in a messy relationship and wonder how you even got there! You owe it to yourself to know yourself! What are your dreams, goals, beliefs, strengths, and hopes. . .and does the other person in the relationship support those things? Feelings of being “in love” and sex can often mask the reality of a relationship. It is amazing what we overlook when we’re “in love”. You may have wondered, “Does this person truly care for me, or are they only after one thing?” Doubts such as these can only be answered by testing the relationship. If sex were no longer part of your relationship, would your partner stay with you? If no, it has to make you wonder if the relationship was ever worth having in the first place! Sexual abstinence is freeing. . .allowing you to discover what your relationship is really made of. Sex doesn't equal love. . .it can only temporarily fill the voids in our lives. It can be hard to admit, but consider the effect an absent or abusive parent may have had on you. Sadly, if you’ve been hurt a lot it can leave you “searchin’ for love in all the wrong places.” Sex outside of marriage tends to leave people feeling used up. . .it doesn’t really solve anything. Don’t use sex like a band-aid. . .it won’t heal your wounds. At Ashland Care Center, we care about you and the health of your relationships. Our consultants are prepared and available to talk about these issues. Give us a call or stop in. Sometimes this depression can be serious and you should not feel ashamed or guilty. It is something with which you may need help. There are resources under the Counseling and Support section which may be of help to you. Also talk to your doctor. Sometimes people hurt those they love—including their children—when they feel angry, depressed or very frustrated. We all have these feeling to different degrees, and at times we need help so we can prevent harming the very ones we love. Don’t be afraid to seek help.
