FROM THE EDITORS
.
We would like to welcome all who have moved into Ley Hill or Botley
and hope this Newsletter proves useful in providing details of what is going on in
this locality. The date of the Produce and Flower Show this year is Saturday 12th
September. Although full details and entry schedules will be available in the
Summer edition of N. & V. which comes out in July, it is not too early to think
about taking photos (see page 13) or to decide what to plant in gardens and
greenhouses as possible prize-winning entries. To quote a lottery slogan “You
gotta be in it to win it!”.
Now winter is behind us we look forward to all the events in and around
the area and hope you will continue your support for them.
We wish you all a Happy Easter

1st Tyler’s Hill Brownies
We have spent the term so far looking at traditional
skills; the girls started the term by honing their detective
skills, quizzing fellow Brownies and enjoying a treasure
hunt. We then moved on to an ambitious five-week plan of
skills-by-rotation, each Six focusing on some of the skills
that feature in five of the traditional Interest Badges,
Agility, Artist, Book-Lover, Cook and Home Skills.
The girls have been devising keep fit routines, drawing a
still life and putting complementary colours to work,
finding out about Chesham Library and sharing their
favourite books, making jam tarts as well as becoming expert shoe cleaners!
We have been very busy and we still have evenings planned around Mothering
Sunday and Easter to tackle yet!
As we do every year, we marked Thinking Day (22nd February), a day when all
members of the Guiding and Scouting family remember fellow members across the
globe. This year we surprised parents with an a cappella rendition of "I Am One
Voice" which builds volume through several verses. We sang this outside the church
in the darkness and it was a lovely way to think about other members of the Guiding
family. Special mention must go to Emilia and Phoebe of the Fox Six who started
and ended the song singing on their own..
Eleanor Garth, Little Owl, 1st Tyler's Hill Brownies
1st Tyler's Hill Rainbow Unit
We meet on Thursdays up at St George’s Church. This term our theme has been
‘favourite games’
We have;
Shared our favourite board games
Played a life sized version of ‘Guess Who’ with dressing up props
Re-enacted the game of ‘Operation’ using face paints and toilet rolls
Made our own flower themed games of ‘snap.’
Played a version of ‘Beetle Drive’ using sheep!
We will be
Doing a red nose danceathon based on the game of ‘Twister’
Having a special ‘Bingo’ based Mother’s day celebration
Finishing the term with some Easter fun
If you have a daughter and you think that she would like to be a Rainbow once she
reaches the age of 5, make sure that you go onto the girl guiding site on line and
register your interest so that we can put her name on the waiting list. Places are
highly sought after.

1st Tyler’s Hill Guides
Before Christmas the Guides decorated individual
fruit cakes for people who would be on their own over the
festive period, and took these to St George's Christingle
Service. We ended the term with a film night with lots of
popcorn being consumed.
This term Emma has completed the Baden-Powell
Challenge by attending a Baden-Powell Adventure at
Heron's Lodge, the Guide Centre in Milton Keynes.
Congratulations to Emma, who will be presented with her badge & certificate later this
term. Four more Guides have nearly completed the challenge, which is the highest award
a girl can gain in the Guide section, and have booked their Adventure for later this year.
On Mondays the Guides have been completing Go for Its!, celebrating Chinese
New Year with activities lead by Becky, and playing games organised by Cate, both
members of our B-P group. We'll be having a sleepover at St George's and then
preparing for Easter.
Girlguiding Chesham celebrates its centenary this year. 1st Chesham (Pioneer)
Guides met for the first time in the spring of 1915. We will be celebrating with various
activities for the girls and adults during the year. If you have ever been involved in
Guiding in Chesham please make contact and we can let you know about these events.
(See information about the Celebration Tea Party on 26th April in this edition of News &
Views.) The Guides will be camping at Braidwood in May - experiencing both traditional
and modern tents and activities.

Donkey Derby - 25 years old
The 25th Annual Donkey Derby is again set to brighten
the days of June on Botley Playing Fields. The 3rd Chesham Scout
Group aim to raise funds by giving you a medley of interesting,
challenging and downright fun stalls and attractions. The donkeys
are booked, as is the weather, so please ensure the date is in your
diary. Sunday 7th June at 12.30pm. If you would like to book a
stall, then please contact Janet Sealy on 07761 808479 or
[email protected] as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing
you there.

1st Tyler’s Scouts
As my last update was back in July, I only have space to
give you a taste of what the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have
been up to for the last few months.
Starting with my magpie instincts, we once again
attended the County Orienteering Competition at Wendover
Woods in October. Finally, at the fifth attempt, we came
home with the last of the four trophies – the County Cubs
trophy. It would be fair to say that Alexei R., Charlie H.
and Martin D. didn’t just win it, they stormed it! They
came home nearly 5 minutes ahead of the team in second place, an almost unheard of
margin in orienteering. Well done, the three of you!
The “turquoise squawk” (a.k.a. the Beavers) had their usual riotous night at the Elgiva
pantomime (Oh, no, they didn’t! Oh, yes, they did!), and they have enjoyed making
conker spiders, elastic band powered cars and tossing the caber for Burns night.
The Cubs and Beavers both visited Waitrose in the autumn term for a look behind
the scenes. It was noticeable that the Beavers were far more courageous about
venturing into the freezers than the Cubs. (They defrosted quite satisfactorily, and
will all surely go on to lead normal lives) Our thanks go to all the staff at Waitrose
for their otherwise very warm welcome.
This term, new badges have been announced for all sections and the Cub leaders have
finally been able to tackle the vastly improved scientist badge, undertaking experiments
to make balloons self-inflate, make a ping pong ball fly, making lava lamps and many
other fun activities. I think they would be happy spending a whole term on the badge,
not just two meetings. The older Cubs attended a bitterly cold day camp and indoor
sleepover in January, but kept warm by lighting their own fires. (Not indoors, I hasten to
add.)
The Scouts have pursued a really varied programme of activities, working on their
Creative, Navigator and Fitness badges, along with a visit to Hemel fire station, a visit
from a Police dog handler and a few lighter activities such as bowling and swimming.
This term Dave Bellamy has joined the Troop as a leader. Welcome, Dave, and thank
you!

Seniors Spring Luncheon
Once again the Memorial Hall was packed with friends old and new who came to
enjoy the excellent food and entertainment provided by Lindsay and Margaret Faulkner
with their team of helpers, without whom this event would not take place.
Special thanks must also be given to Jenny, Sue, Pauline and Angie, plus five
young ladies from Ley Hill School who came to wait at tables. Their efforts were
much appreciated and the school is also thanked for allowing them to help.
After a good lunch, which included a choice of dreamy desserts, Dave Peterson
organised a quiz based on 60s Pop Music Charts which provided much fun, with
the winning team scoring 19 out of 20!! After the balloon based raffle had taken
place, the audience were treated to the talents of ‘Notorious’ a group of four young ladies
singing ‘a cappella’. They not only sang beautifully but encouraged audience
participation to take part in their rendering of How Much is that Doggy in the Window?
They then gave instructions as to how an audience could create a thunder storm effect
which almost brought the house down – so loud was the noise.
When it was time to leave some lucky recipients each took home one of the
beautiful table arrangements made by Sheila. All seemed to agree that once more
the Seniors Lunch had proved to be a great success.
If you think you may be eligible and would like to come to this popular event next
year, it is not too early to phone Lindsay on 783048. for details

Ley Hill School
The Spring Term is often a term dominated by the Arts
and 2015 is no exception. On 7th February, the school
hosted the Annual Speech Festival, an even organised and
compared by one of the school's teachers, Mrs Blackwood.
She made the following comments: "Thirty children from
Years 1 to 6 participated in this year's Speech Festival,
competing with children from other local schools. The
overall standard was very high and the performances from
Ley Hill pupils were fantastic! Martin Dyer and Sumeet Brar
won second and third places in the Prepared Reading class and Abbie McCarthy and
Cooper Cummings won first and second places for their speeches. Abbie was also
selected for a Chesham Arts Festival trophy and invited to perform at the Elgiva
Theatre. Well done to all the performers!"
The school's annual Eisteddfod continued its journey around the British Isles, visiting
Scotland for 2015. As well as beautiful handwriting and artwork, the school was treated
to dance, song, music and poem recitals. There is a wonderful display of work in the
school's entrance lobby.
Also in the lobby is a wonderful display based on the school's latest "Big Write;"
focusing on Winter and a snowy day, the display is alive with crunching leaves, cheeky
snowmen and enchanted icicles. The work ranges from Reception to Year 6 and
includes descriptive writing, paintings and other inspired writings and art work.
The school is now on Twitter! Follow us @LeyHillSchool.

SWEENEY TODD
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’
Was performed by ‘The Luvvies’ at the Memorial Hall in November 2014
The Luvvies’ latest production, Stephen Sondheim’s
acclaimed musical thriller ‘Sweeney Todd’, attracted capacity
audiences who were thrilled (and just a little scared!) and who
agreed it was the finest show the Luvvies had ever staged.
This darkly atmospheric musical play was performed ‘in the
round’ and our lovely Memorial Hall was transformed into Mrs
Lovett’s Pie Shop and Sweeney Todd’s Barber Shop.
Thanks to all who performed, helped and supported us in raising in excess of £2,500
for local charities. This year’s November show is still being planned but will be
performed between 25 and 28 November – all being well!

Local Development – the Next Twenty Years!
I wrote in News and Views some time ago about the use of
consultations by the Council (and other bodies) and the
importance of responding to them. Many of you will have
responded to the most recent - and important - consultation on
the District Council’s development plans for the next twenty
years. In particular it asked for residents’ views on what
housing is needed locally, how much and where to put it.
Those of us that did respond to this consultation will now be kept informed of the
development plan’s progress as an interested party. If your neighbours are interested
in potential developments but were unable to respond to the consultation – please
take the opportunity to keep them in the loop!
There is, sadly, a circle to be squared across the district regarding development, in
particular for the villages, to accommodate:
The perceived need for additional local housing as determined by official reviews
The real need for local housing by younger people keen to stay in the area, or indeed
older people who would like to downsize but continue to live locally
The need to preserve green belt and AONB - that make up the majority of the
undeveloped land around us – that benefit all of us so much.
The sensitivity of local infrastructure to additional housing – transport and schools
for example.
The wider economic benefits that house building is thought to bring and which
influence government priorities nationally.
Whatever your views, please do make them known – especially when they are
sought actively through consultations. This is one of the diminishing number of ways
in which we can all act to help change the future for the better.
Andrew Garth District Councillor
PLANT FLOWERS
Would you be interested in getting together with your neighbours to
plant flowers for Ley Hill?
Ley Hill and Botley is a beautiful village and that's
particularly true in the spring when roadside flowers appear, like
the daffodils on the verges near the School. Wouldn't it be great
if that colour spread to other parts of our village to brighten
verges and hedge-rows, and not just in spring?
The Memorial Hall committee is keen to get villagers involved in this small
project by planting flowers in areas near their home. We would be happy to help you
get started by donating seeds or flowers or bulbs. If you're interested, please contact
me on this email.

God is Great
(The monthly Sunday club at St George’s Church, Tylers Hill Road)
Our lively, thriving club is made up of youngsters from the age of 4 to 14.
They take part in a wide range of activities suited to their age and interests and have
fun learning about Jesus and the Bible. We always seem to end up with food being
involved at some point in the session!! Team games are also a great favourite.
During our latest series of sessions we have found out about Jesus being God’s great
plan to save us. Recently we have made spinning dials showing that the Wise men
recognised Jesus as the fulfilment of God’s promise, and have created a giant tree, in
response to the Zaccheus story, representing the fact that Jesus came for all of us so
that we can be forgiven for our sins. We are now heading for our Easter fun, which
will of course involve food in the form of chocolate!
Our older GIG members also attend a film club where they watch a movie and then
have a Bible related discussion linked to the theme of the movie. The latest successful
evening was spent watching the Lego movie whilst munching through cups of sweets
and popcorn!

LATIMER AND LEY HILL PARISH COUNCIL
Spring is here and so it’s time once again to tidy
our village. Do please come along on Saturday 21
March 9.30-12 to collect a sack, hi-viz vest and
litter picker. Children are very welcome to
accompany Mum and Dad. It’s all good citizenship
training and we appreciate the support of Ley Hill
School too. See if we can beat 9 who turned up in
October!
We welcome the 30mph speeding posters
produced by the School and hope you have seen them around the village. Thank you to
all the children who have worked hard producing them. The message seems to be
seeping through, although there will always be errant and selfish drivers. Spare 30mph
posters for wheelie bins are still available – please contact the Clerk.
Monday 27 April is our Annual Parish Meeting 7.30pm in the Methodist Chapel.
Local planning issues at various locations around the village are ‘hot topics’ so come
along. Parish Councillors want to hear your views. We have also invited Helen Fincher
from the BCC ‘Do it online’ campaign to explain how online services benefits both the
Council and residents. We welcome your views on possible plans for the Beacon area
too.
Thursday 7 May is Election Day for parish, district and national areas. Ley Hill
Memorial Hall is our polling station and this is open from 7am to 10pm. Further details
will be on the website and notice boards.
A list of Councillors is included elsewhere in this edition, but we would also like to
thank three folk who support our work quietly and tirelessly.......Sally Kendall for her
work on our website 24/7, Terry Gillott for tending our burial ground and keep it
looking beautiful, and Jenet Hill for administering burial ground matters so
conscientiously, and with the appropriate kindness and sensitivity needed.
We wish you all a pleasant summer and hope you continue to enjoy all this
lovely village has to offer.
