2014 was a great year at Lehigh Acres Middle School. Our students reflect on their favorite memories at LAMS.
Best dance: Creepy Carnival because of the theme you could wear anything.
Best field trip: Epcot trip field trip was awesome but, the upcoming field trips are going to be fantastic!
Best event: Ice Bucket Challenge was one of the best and remarkable moment at LAMS.
Best PBS event: Hot cocoa and movie. Why? Because you could hang out with friends, drink hot cocoa, and
watch a movie.
Best time: Winter break was almost 3 weeks! It also led into a new year. Let’s make 2015 even better!
Odyssey of the Mind
By Daniel Barry
Odyssey of the Mind is an organization where teams
creatively solve one out of six problems and compete
at district, state, national, and world levels.
It is a great program that teaches kids about
problem solving and creativity. Overall, it is just fun
and is a great opportunity to express your own creativity and problem solving skills.
At LAMS we have two teams. One team is doing a
silent movie and the other is doing the problem
Pandora’s Box. The coaches are Mrs. Schmidt, Mr.
Harmon and Mrs. Borek. The coaches cannot help or
give ideas. This allows the team to build
independence and use their full creativity not just
doing what the coach says they should do.
Odyssey of the Mind is a great program and
everybody who can stay after school next school year
should join!

School Volunteers – “We Thank You!”
The month of February is recognized as “School Volunteer Month” by the School District of Lee County. Last year schools
across the district reported that volunteers, including youth, adults, and seniors donated over 800,000 hours of volunteer
service! School volunteers provide a variety of valuable services that include, but are not limited to:
1. Listening to children read
2. Serving as assistants in the media center, office, cafeteria, or on the playground
3. Helping students with special projects
4. Taking tickets or money for sport events or plays/musicals
5. Managing fundraising events
6. Preparing classroom materials, like flashcards, charts, bulletin boards and cutouts
7. Serving on school and district committees
8. Filing papers, records and materials
9. Keeping our school campuses clean
As a parent, you become a school volunteer by being involved in your child’s education by asking your child about school
and checking homework; attending teacher conferences; reading with your child; talking with your child’s teachers; and,
telling your child you love them every day! Volunteer service begins at home!

Chenella Scott: “The school dance we had during school hours because I had fun with my friends.”
Dylan Bowen: “My favorite thing about 2014 was the field trips we got to go on.”
Jacob Aviles: “I liked Gym because I got to play sports and with my friends.”
Sierra Bowen: “My favorite moment of 2014 was getting to
meet all the new people and getting to take more than one amazing elective.
I also enjoyed watching the way school changed from
new vending machines and the art work, it was out of this world!”
Dominique Pearyer: “Spirit week because I got to show
my own personality in what I wore. Also I liked that the whole week
was casual, that we could wear pajamas, silly outfits and just be funny and crazy.”
Beth Zubeita: “My favorite part about 2014 is that I passed the
FCAT and I got into all Cambridge classes! I made a 2014
resolution and it worked. It really was a pretty good year.
When we went back to school I got a 4.0 for 1st quarter!

#12 Quinton
Desamours
Our team this year was fantastic; we won many games and faced many opponents.
Our most valuable player is, seventh grader, Quinton Desamours. He scored more overall points than the whole
team, but Quinton knows it takes the team to win the game. Congratulations to our LAMS athletes!

Nurse’s Notes
Hello Parents/Guardians,
Please be aware any 6th grader that has not received their updated immunizations, to enter into 7 th
grade, the Tdap and 2nd Chicken Pox vaccines are required. I have been sending out Parent Link
message to those students and will continue to update you.
Please also remember The Florida Department of Health, located on 3920 Michigan Avenue, Ft.
Myers, provides student vaccines free of charge. Call 239-332-9601 they take walk in only Monday
through Thursday 8am – 3:30pm and on Fridays 1pm till 3:30pm always call before going.
February is Heart Month and in celebration I will be training AVID students CPR.
Why Learn Hands – Only CPR?
Cardiac Arrest – an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs –is a leading cause of death.
Each year, over 420,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur in the U.S. When a person has a cardiac
arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby.
According to the American Heart Association, 90% of people who suffer out of hospital cardiac arrests
die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of
survival. Most Americans (70%) feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t
know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim.
Be the Difference For Someone You Love
If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of
someone you love: a child, a spouse, a parent or a friend. 80% of out of hospital cardiac arrests
happen in private or residential settings. Unfortunately, only 41% of people who experience an out of
hospital cardiac arrest get the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives.
Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for sudden cardiac arrest at
home, at work or in public. It can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival.
Thank you always from your school nurse,
Mrs. Camarda RN, BSN

Highly Qualified Teachers
Dear Parent or guardian:
In an effort to ensure that all students in the School District of Lee County are provided the highest quality education by effective and
skilled teachers, we are continually working to make sure all of core academic subjects meet the definition of “Highly Qualified” under the No
Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. Core academic subjects include English, Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Civics/Government, Economics, Geography, History, Science, Foreign languages, and the Arts. In order for a teacher to meet the definition of “Highly Qualified” they
must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher, have full state certification, and demonstrate knowledge of the academic subject area(s) in which
they teach.
Although the district makes every effort to hire teachers that meet NCLB’s demanding highly qualified teacher requirements, we would
like to inform you that Gabriel Giddings, Sarah Rogozinski, Cindy Petruzelli and Joseph Brunson although properly licensed to teach in the
state of Florida, does not meet the definition of “Highly Qualified”. They are currently working to meet this requirement, and the School District of Lee County has full confidence in their ability to teach your child effectively. In addition, Lehigh Acres Middle School (LAMS) is providing on-going assistance to these teachers so they continue to support student achievement at LAMS.
If you have any question regarding the qualifications of these teachers, please feel free to contact Neketa Watson, Principal at 239-3696108.
Estimado Padre/Madre Tutor Legal:
hijo/a eficazmente.
