The past couple of months we were able to witness the new buds of spring. I have always enjoyed spring and watching the land transform into beauty. It gives me hope for the months ahead – summer! This is a time of energy, fun and relaxation. A time where the weather allows us to get out and about and enjoy the beautiful area that we call home. As I reflect on the changing of seasons it reminds me of the women that come through the doors at Life Recovery. Most come downcast and broken. They have lost everything (or close to it). They come with a tiny seed of hope and faith and courage. While at the house they tap into the hope and faith of the staff and volunteers and in such their hope and faith grows even bigger. We are blessed to witness these women transform like the seasons. Their beauty is evident as they learn to know who God is and how much He loves them. I want to extend my thanks for all the prayers and donations that you have so generously given. You are part of the transformation in the life of the women. - SHELLEY LANGELAAR (Certified Addictions Counsellor) OUR MISSION is to help others grow and believe in Jesus Christ, allowing Him to take an active part in their recovery from substance addiction. OUR BELIEF is that the inspired word of God must be our fundamental source and inspiration in the professional counselling, treatment and rehabilitation process. Above all, we believe that love and compassion should be at the heart of a Biblical based ministry. OUR GOAL is to be a safe, structured and supportive environment for women who desire freedom from their substance abusing lifestyle. I was drinking very heavily every day and could not stop for fear of seizures caused by withdrawal. I was in a toxic relationship with another alcoholic and my two teenagers were on the back burner. God was nowhere to be found. Walking through the doors at LIFE was not an easy feat but it was the first time I felt God in a long time. In my journey here I have faced many obstacles. I was able to overcome them with the love and support of the staff. I have learned how beautiful life can be if I just surrender myself and put God first. In just three short months I have completed my 12 steps, fallen in love with Jesus, and rebuilt some very broken family relations. My recovery is going to continue in a second stage program and I will forever be grateful to LIFE Recovery. For the solid foundation they helped me build. I may not be where I want to be but I am sure thankful not to be where I was and I have learned that I can forget what lies behind me and press forward into God’s plan for my life. Ten Years of operation for the Thrift Store - seems amazing and humbling when we think of the ‘idea’ that was born in Jan 2005. Then, thru God’s grace a store opened in April of the same year. These are things that we know only God can do. Putting people in place to bring the small idea into a huge blessing for LIFE Recovery. We are so grateful that Ben and Henny DeRegt were obedient to the call and shared themselves and their experience with LIFE Recovery. We are amazed with the many volunteers who joined the team and made things happen. Each one has been valued. The success of the store is also a reflection of a community donating and shopping, sharing the news of our facility. The purpose of the store is to offer a safe place for women in our program to learn skills, connect with our volunteers (community) and gain a sense of self worth thru serving others. It is also so much more. Aside from the income generated which we rely on to support the programs, the volunteers are given an opportunity to serve and feel connected. Personally, it has been a blessing to be involved. You too can volunteer - just talk to the store manager, Lily Bergen. We’re always delighted to add to our team! LIFE Second Chance Thrift store has been a life changing project for our clients, our volunteers and our staff. What seemed impossible to us, God makes possible in life changing ways everyday. ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT Client Story # 2 I started abusing alcohol and medication after I gave up my one month son when I was 18. I started drinking to keep friends so that people would want to hang out, because I had booze and a couch to crash on. Eventually, I found myself self-medicating a deep depression to escape the grief, shame, and empty feeling that I was left with when my child was adopted. I managed my addiction for the next couple of years, maintaining just enough to get through work and school. I became codependent on my partners and my addiction. Then, I suddenly lost complete control when I was left alone right after I completed a week long detox. My partner had left me and I pushed away my friends and family, so I gave up and left my job and stopped going to school. I used for the next two months every minute of every day, scared to face all I had bottled up and buried deep inside. As long as I had my drugs I did not have to face the loneliness and shame. When I came to LIFE Recovery I faced God who I had been running away from and blaming for all of my mistakes. LIFE Recovery has helped me feel my feelings and I no longer hate that empty feeling inside. I have filled that empty void with God. I am finally grieving for my son and I have the support of all the women at LIFE Recovery and a safe environment to do so. www.liferecovery.ca Mark your calendars for the upcoming Annual LIFE Recovery Charity Golf Tournament coming up on Friday September 18, 2015 at 1pm at Ledgeview Golf Course.
