35-LDISTRICT NEWSLETTER APRIL, 2015

35-L DISTRICT NEWSLETTER
APRIL, 2015
“SERVICE IN THE PRIDE”
DG Bob Melnick and Diane
Hello Fellow Lions,
We are fast approaching the end of this Lionistic year and it has proven to be an exciting and surprising one to
say the least. Our last District Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Ocala Hilton. The
information and agenda for this has been publicized in numerous “Did You Know” articles and is also included
in this month’s newsletter. We will again have a Memorial Service for our fellow Lions that have passed during
the year during this meeting. If you have someone in your club that you would like to be recognized and have
not already sent their names to LCI please send their information to me at: [email protected] so that we
may honor them at that time. I encourage all of our Lions to attend this meeting and look forward to seeing you
there.
Our Multiple District Convention will be held from April 30 through May 3, 2015 at the Ocala Hilton.
Registration forms for this can be found in your Lions magazine and room reservations (if you need one) are
filling up fast. Forms for your club’s delegates will be sent to you shortly and a Registration Fee is needed for
all convention attendees, even those just attending the voting on Saturday, May 2 nd. This is where you will be
able to vote for our District’s Governor as well as our 1st and 2nd Vice-District Governors and where your vote
will count on the proposed resolution to increase the Multiple District dues by $1.00 from $21.00 to $22.00 to
be phased in over 1 year effective with fiscal year 2015-2016. I encourage each Lion to try to attend some part
of this convention whether it is for our District Luncheon or the Fun Night Derby on Friday, the Banquet on
Saturday evening, or just for the fun and friendship that we all share during the entire weekend. You won’t be
sorry that you did.
By this time your club should have your officers for next year in place and this information sent to LCI by your
club secretary. This information is vital for 1st Vice-District Governor Larry Hopkins as he continues to compile
his District Directory for his year as Governor. Without this information your club’s information may be missing
or incorrect. With your help you can make his job a lot easier.
During the past months I have had the privilege to induct new members into your clubs. Recently several
clubs have brought in more than one member at a time – some as many as five to eight. This is amazing and
reinforces that the “Ask One” campaign is working! Well done District L. We also have a new campus club at
the University of Florida in Gainesville and welcome them to our family and wish them well as they celebrate
their Charter Night on April 16th. April is Lions Growth Month and as you can see we are on the right track. As
a reminder, any club that installs a new member during April is eligible for a patch for their banner. Many of
you have received one for new members in October and now is a great time to add another.
We are still working to celebrate our centennial by participating in the 100 Million Acts of Service that
International President, Joe Preston, has challenged us with. I know that many of our clubs are doing their part
and I want to remind you to make sure that you report your service activities to LCI each month. By doing this
your club will get credit toward a patch for your club banner. As of last month there have been six clubs that
have earned this patch and I know that there are many more that are probably eligible but have just not
reported their activities yet. There is still time – get your activities reports out to LCI each month. Your clubs
deserve to be recognized for the good works and acts of service that you do each and every day.
As you know I believe that: Service - is the rent we pay for living on this planet and, I for one want to thank you
for all the unselfish acts of service that you continue to do in the name of Lionism.
Yours in Lionism,
DG Bob Melnick

Fellow Lions,
The month of April is a busy month for Lions with it being Family and Friends Month, Lions
Membership Growth Month, Leo Club Awareness Month and April 28th being Lions Worldwide Induction Day.
You can go on www.lionsclubs.org and research out what these all would mean to your club. Pick one or two of
them and go for it as this will mean more members doing the good work in your local communities.
I would also like to remind you that this month is the time that your nominations committee should be
presenting your next year’s slate of club officers. Let’s look for those who show leadership potential and give
them some responsibility for the club. The voting for officer’s take place from the candidates put forward by the
nominations committee. Other members can be added by the appropriate motions being made prior to the vote.
Secretaries take this time to make sure that your club and member information is correct in MyLCI. This is the
information we use to create the district directory. A concerted effort needs to be made by each club to ensure
all of your members email address is correct in MyLCI. This will be more critical to have starting this next year
as the method in which communications happen in the district will be changing. All members with email
addresses will receive next year’s District Newsletter and all other district correspondence directly. I ask that if
your club has a web page that it be updated. There are a lot of club web pages that have not been updated, in
some cases, for more than two years. Remember that in today’s age prospective members will review the web
page when choosing which local club (Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, Elks, Masons, etc.) they want to be a part of.
Make sure that you club stands out above the others that are competing for those community service minded
individuals looking for a home.
To help defray the cost to the district, and personal expenses, to create the directory and maintain the
district web site, we will again be offering Lions and all Lions Clubs the opportunity to place an ad. You are
welcome to contact me to obtain additional information on the options that are available. However, in general
the cost will be $25.00 for a quarter page, $50.00 for a half page, $75.00 for a three quarter page and $100.00
for a whole page. Next year your advertisement will be in both the printed directory and the new web site.
Please make the checks payable to District 35-L and mail to Lion Larry Hopkins, 4998 C.R. 209 S., Green
Cove Springs, FL 32043 or give to me in person at the District Meeting in Ocala on April 11 th. Once I have
your ad placed then I will forward the checks to our District Treasurer Carl Plesner.
The month of March was good for our district with 35 new members added and only 9 members
dropped leaving us at a plus 11 members for the year so far. These numbers include our newly chartered UF
Campus Club which chartered with 20 new members. An awesome job was done by Lions Tony Stefanowicz,
PDG and Tony Martin as their hard work created this new club. Great job to the following clubs, who brought
in new, transferred or reinstated members this past month! Alachua +2; Ancient City +3; Callahan +1;
Chattahoochee +2; High Springs +3; Jacksonville Beaches +1; Jacksonville RAW +1; Navarre +1; and Silver
Springs with a +1 in new members. The great thing about these numbers is that four were reinstated members.
Way to help shut the back door. Great job Ancient City and High Springs for having the most members added
for the month. Let’s see if we can get all clubs to add at least one new member by June 30th 2015. We can do it!
Just remember to “ASK ONE” to come visit your club and invite them to be a part of what you are doing for
your local communities and the world.
Remember not to stress over what you don’t have and make the most of what you do have; and I would
rather you try something great and fail than for you to try nothing and succeed.
Let’s all Conduct Service in the Pride

2 Vice District Governor Larry Masters and Sue
Hello My Brothers and Sisters in Lions,
I hope all is well with everyone.
I would like to thank everyone in the Cabinet for your support in electing me as your 2nd Vice
Governor for District 35L. It is my goal to be accessible to my brothers and sisters in Lions when you
need assistance.
My wife is also a Lions and was elected to be District Secretary in July. It is always helpful to have your
spouse involved especially if they do most of the work. The role of the secretary is so important,
without good record keeping and keeping the members informed on what's going on in their clubs
things can go south fast. It's my opinion that we need to appreciate our secretaries.
We need to try to concentrate on membership retention, participating and have a great time being a
Lion Thank you for your help and support.
