Year 8 Trip…
During February, pupils from Year 8
travelled to The Ulster Folk and Transport
Museum as part of their History Course.
We went around the village and were able
to see the way people lived in the past.
We had the chance to visit a traditional
school, church and bank while we were
there. We also saw an old picture house,
some farms and a weaver’s house.
We had a great day, it was really enjoyable
and we would love to go again!

Year 10 Trip to Corrymeela
On the 10th December, a class from St
Mary’s and 10AX from LJHS headed to
Corrymeela for sessions involving games and
teambuilding exercises.
We were placed into groups with St Mary’s
to complete challenges and build trust.
Between each challenge and free time, there
was a session educating us on identity,
discrimination, sectarianism and even bits
about the Holocaust. We had group
discussions about treating each other with
respect and equality no matter what religion
or race people are.
After a very short hibernation, the students
emerged with barely any sleep. It was a
battle ground of zombified teenagers
searching for Wi-Fi and signal; the girls
panicking over the lack of time for make-up
and straightening hair. After more sessions
and failed attempts of making beds, the
adventure had sadly come to an end.
This experience has taught us that we
should never discriminate, never show
prejudice or judge others, as well as the
importance of going to bed on time!

Come Dine With Me!
The ukulele group was delighted to be part of
the annual ‘Come Dine With Me’ at Lurgan
Youth Annex, performing a whole evening of
music for youth groups from across Lurgan. As
you can see, it was a Mexican theme! The
group was also part of the official launch of
‘The Hub’ in Lurgan, providing music for the
Mayor and local business representatives.

Pupils
9BY pupils Jordan, Callum and Sebastian interviewed NI
Football Manager, Michael O'Neill as part of School
Report. To help, they met with Shane, a journalist who is
currently in charge of Sport at BBC NI - he was brilliant
with the boys!
LJHS, based on its past record on School Report, was
asked to do this interview. Schools in the rest of UK
interviewed the England, Scotland and Wales Football
Managers. It is quite an honour for us to be asked. Click

LJHS Hosts another Successful Open Night
On Thursday 15th January, LJHS opened its doors to prospective
parents and pupils.
Throughout the night, a range of activities were on offer to give a taste
of what life as a pupil of LJHS would really be like. A live stream was
aired throughout the evening, which showcased the range of activities
on offer both inside and outside the classroom.
Many thanks to: all departments for their hard work in arranging events
within their classrooms; all prefects who helped on the night and of
course to Mr. R. McDowell for organising another successful evening.

What is Reach?
Reach is a local mentoring organisation, which
works in three areas: schools, wider
community, and churches. It is about providing
one to one relationships that can encourage,
support, guide, and challenge young people.
It has been a busy Winter
Term for the Reach Team,
taking the opportunity to
step out in faith with two
workers starting on a full
time basis.
A picture from our
Business Breakfast on the
22nd January. It was
fantastic to have over 30
representatives from local
businesses. Thank you to
everyone who attended
and those who have taken
the step to join in on this
journey with us.
This month the Reach logo will
be speeding around Spain, as
Philip McGrath has kindly
branded his bike to raise
awareness of the work of Reach.
Rick Preston has worked with Lurgan Elim
Church for the past 12 years, before starting
full time to co-ordinate the work of Reach.
Jonny Hampton has currently taken a career break
from teaching Primary Six at Millington Primary School
to help co-ordinate the work of Reach within Lurgan.

Action MS
This term, Lurgan Junior High School has raised lots
of money for a very special charity.
Rachel, 9AX was the highest collector in N. Ireland
for the MS Charity Walks with a whopping £500.10.
Our school was the highest collecting Secondary
School with £4104 raised. Well done to all those
involved!
Well done to Jindara, 10CX who volunteered
to have her head shaved live! She wanted to
donate her hair to help make wigs for those
suffering from cancer.
Mrs Gilbert and 10BZ now have a twinned toilet
in Ethiopia! They raised the money through
various bun sales in school!

“Promoting Education Within The Community”
This Term…
Community Relations and civic leadership
continue to be a key focus of our work at
the Annexe. Over the past few months
young people have been engaged in a
variety of study visits to Londonderry,
Dublin and Stormont through the
partnership project between Clann
Eireann and Donnycarney Youth club
(Dublin).
May I take this opportunity to wish you
all a happy and blessed Easter break?

A recent Department of Education
inspection was carried out at the Annexe
in December, 2014. The conclusion of the

This was a positive result for all who were
involved. A full copy of the ETI report is

Lurgan Town Project
These opportunities link in
with the SELB Lurgan Town
Project to support peacebuilding and reconciliation
across the town. Young
people are demonstrating
that they are motivated to
make positive changes by
building relationships,
sharing cultures and
participating in dialogue.
This process has helped to
improve confidence and
develop shared spaces where
young people can meet and
learn from each other.
Learning Together Programme
'Learning Together' is a personal and social
development programme for KS3 and KS4 pupils.
Some of the modules of 'Learning Together' focus
on Self-esteem, Resilience, Stress and Anxiety and
Peer Pressure. Through partnerships with local
schools and the SELB Youth Service 'Learning
Together' aims to support pupils' personal and
social development through active teaching
methods which engage them in group work and
dialogue.
In terms of supporting pupils making the transition
from primary to post-primary schools, we are
delivering the 'New Beginnings' programme with
Dickson Primary School P7s. This has been a very
enriching experience for the pupils and it has
helped to improve relationships and develop
confidence within the class. Our aim is to support
other primary schools across the geographical area
through the 'New Beginnings' programme. The
strength of such programmes is based on the
collaborative approach which supports cofacilitation between teachers and youth workers.

Year 8
Head Coach, Mr J. Guy stated in September that it would take at least 6 months for his ‘philosophy’ to
imbed itself into the mind-set of the new Year 8 squad, and with the turn of the year, brought the turn of
the tide for the Under 12 team.
Reaching the Quarter Final of the U12 NI Cup was a tremendous achievement and despite a great start from
LJHS, consistent pressure from Edmund Rice College sadly resulted in a 0-1 victory for the Belfast school.
The last home game of the season came against Killicomaine JHS where, thanks to two well-taken strikes
from Dylan McKerr, LJHS won 2-1. Sadly, the final game of the season resulted in defeat away to Lismore.
Mr Guy would like to thank his coaches, school staff, parents and most importantly all of the boys who have
attended practice this year. They have shown great dedication on a Monday afternoon and their desire to
improve with every match has set a solid foundation for next year.

Year 10
The Year 10s have been the most improved
team this season finishing mid-table in the
Mid-Ulster League after a good run in the
Northern Ireland Cup.
Unfortunately, their last two league games
ended in defeat against joint league
champions Dromore (2-1) and Lismore (3-1).
The Dromore game was arguably their best
display of the year with an injury time goal
giving Dromore the win.
Callum Ferris, Jordan Dawson and Josh
Woods, all from Year 9 have been excellent
in the Year 10 team this year. Captain Tyler
Boyce has also been superb between the
posts and full back Timothy Millen has been
outstanding, possibly the most improved
player during the past 3 seasons.
The staff and pupils of Lurgan Junior High School, would like to
wish you and your family,
A very Happy
Easter
