Ozone Water Treatment Systems 74 How RGF Produces Ozone for Water Treatment Decades ago, scientists discovered how to artificially produce ozone through electrical discharge. The method has been used in Europe for water purification since the early 1900’s and has been rapidly gaining popularity in municipal water plants in the United States. This type of ozone production is generally used in high demand and high flow applications. In the 1970’s, an inexpensive and reliable method of making ozone was discovered utilizing a specific wave of UV light. Ozone generated from UV light is just as effective as ozone produced from electrical discharge or naturally occurring ozone. This production method is preferred for many applications based on cost, reliability, maintenance, and quantity. This method is generally used in low flow, low demand applications. (Up to .1%). Corona Discharge units utilize an electrical ground to generate ozone. These units require air preparation and are higher in maintenance but can produce heavy volumes by weight Industries have been using ozone successfully for many years in a wide range of applications, including food and beverage processing, water purification, swimming pools, algae removal in ponds, and spa purification. In recent years, ozone’s benefits also have been realized in the food industry and wastewater treatment business. RGF started experimenting with ozone in 1985 and cautiously started using the RGF TurboHydrozone® in their wastewater treatment systems in 1987. The TurboHydrozone® was a great success and drastically improved our wastewater system performance. The RGF Ozone Water Treatment Plan The RGF ozone water treatment program consists of the following: • Ultraviolet Light (UV) produced ozone - Up to 0.1% concentration (for low demand water treatment) • Corona Discharge (CD) produced ozone - Up to 5% concentration with oxygen (for high demand potable or wastewater treatment) RGF TurboHydrozone® UV Ozone Systems are low cost, low maintenance systems ideal for low flow water systems where high concentrations of ozone are not necessary. UV ozone is also very effective in low flow advanced oxidation systems such as RGFs CO3P or UV/O3 systems. RGF CD Ozone Systems are preferred when high concentrations of ozone are needed to achieve high mass transfer efficiency in water such as : • High flow rates • Ozone residuals in water • Single pass treatment • Wastewater disinfection Note: refer to the Engineering Data Section for a comparison of UV vs. CD ozone Applications The TurboHydrozone® Ozone Water Treatment Systems destroy by oxidation the following water contaminants: • Bacteria • Algae • Color • Manganese * • Viruses • Odors • BOD/COD • VOC’s • Iron * • Oils, Fats and Grease • Chlorine * by precipitation Water Treatment Sizing Formula Use the following formula for calculating the applied dosage of ozone in water. (Grams per hour / Gallons per minute) X 4.41 = PPM Dosage Example for TurboHydrozone® Model 60: This is an example of a 5 gpm venturi system utilizing a TurboHydrozone® Model 60. (0.24 gm/hr / 5 gpm) x 4.41 = 0.211 PPM Dosage The amount of applied ozone to purify water depends upon the temperature and the amount and type of contaminants in the water. 3875 Fiscal Court, West Palm Beach, Florida 33404 1-800-842-7771, (561) 848-1826, Fax (561) 848-9454 http://www.rgf.com 75 Ozone Water Treatment Systems TurboHydrozone® Models 30, 60, and 120 Ultraviolet Light Ozone Generators These extremely durable, low cost ozone generators for water treatment are designed to be used in holding tanks, pools, decorative fountains or water treatment and recycling systems. It is the most powerful commercially available oxidizer known to man. Ozone is made from oxygen and reverts back to oxygen upon decomposition. Ozone is more effective than chlorine and it destroys odors, mold, yeast and microorganisms such as E. Coli., Salmonella, and Listeria Monocytogenes. The use of ozone as a disinfectant is not a new technology and has been used for almost one hundred years as a primary treatment for drinking water supplies. Food processors have long relied on chemicals and heat to assist in the control of bacteria on food surfaces, plant equipment, and food contact surfaces during processing and just before final packaging. Prior to June 2001, the use of ozone was not allowed for anti-microbial treatment of food. Both FDA and USDA have now approved ozone for food contact. The use of ozone provides the highest level of sanitation and avoids the use and handling of hazardous chemicals. In addition, since ozone rapidly decomposes to oxygen, there would be no possibility that any residue would remain on food surfaces. RGF Anti-Microbial Ozone System is designed for accurate, reliable ozone application for continuous treatment of food products, slicing blades, conveyor belts, and other food contact surfaces. Ozone-laden water is also employed during plant sanitation and CIP processes. The ozone system is mounted in an integrated stainless steel enclosure. The ozone system consists of a high efficiency, air-cooled, corona discharge ozone generator with internal oxygen concentrator/compressor. The mass transfer system is designed for maximum efficiency. This includes an injector, contactor, and degassing separator. An off-gas destruct unit is included to capture any ozone not dissolved into water. If needed an optional booster pump can deliver ozone-laden water up to several hundred feet away from the generation point. The instrumentation package includes a dissolved ozone residual analyzer, 4-20 mAmps controller, pressure gauges and indicator lights. The purpose of the residual analyzer is to continuously monitor the level of residual ozone at the water outlet. Through the controller, this signal is used to increase or decrease the output of the ozone generator at the selected level (set point). An optional ambient ozone detector is also available. The unique design of this system incorporates precision machining to optimize fluid flow characteristics as well as ultraviolet light transmittance into the fluid space. The vertical reactor design allows for continuous operation at pressures as high as 50 PSI while providing the smallest possible footprint. A single pass through this unit results in a UV exposure in excess of 40,000 microwatt-sec/cm2. The entire outer shell assembly of the unit can be removed in minutes by simply removing the TriClover style clamps and lifting the shell off the unit base. With the outer shell removed, the interior of the unit is accessible for visual inspection. This simple design facilitates routine inspections to ensure proper CIP procedures are being followed in critical operating environments. This system is easily incorporated into existing loops with the unit inlet and outlet connections being located on the outer tube assembly. This allows the connections to be rotated 360 degrees to accommodate existing plant system components. This unique feature also makes it possible to easily accommodate multiple units in parallel configurations for higher flow rate applications. Patent Pending All systems come standard with: stainless steel construction, optical display panels for lamp status, an electronic leak detector with alarm contact and visual indicator light, pump interlock, FDA approved high impact polymer which encase the emitters to prevent breakage and fluid contamination, the non-polar surface properties greatly inhibits fouling reducing system maintenance.
