Lodestar School of Art Lodestar | France 2015 23 March Founded in 2014 by painter Denis Farrell as an alternative to traditional academic pressures, Lodestar School of Art is a place where willingness to fail is a triumph and to take a risk is key to crossing the Rubicon. The Lodestar School of Art is a
summer school with a difference
[and]could be described as an
interruption and a temporary
alternative to conventional
academic art education. [Denis
Farrell] aimed to attract artists who
wanted to develop their work – to
shake it up and move it on – and
who wanted some informed critical
input and real conversation about
making art and about the theoretical
underpinning that informs its
making.
The idea is that no one is a passive
or conventionally authoritative
participant. Everyone works,
whether that means painting,
drawing, talking, writing or
thinking, and everything is up for
grabs. At the start of the 10 days,
Farrell relished that he was not
quite sure what was going to
happen. (read more)

4 We welcome artists who have ambition for their painting and who are willing to take the creative risks necessary to develop their work. Artists who seek critical input on a body of work to serve as a portfolio for application to graduate programs. Artists who seek rigorous and intensive exchange concerning both studio work and critical thinking in a creative, professional environment. WHO SHOULD APPLY… AND WHAT TO EXPECT
To immerse in painting and drawing. To enjoy the company of others. To lose oneself in the beauty of big skies and deep forests. To think, to reflect, to take risks. And to be brave. 5 REFLECTION + DISCUSSION

6 La Maison Laurentine: Centre d’Art Discret, located in the heart of the recently established National Forest Park (2012), is a contemporary art centre dedicated to the themes of the forest, springs, valleys and plains as sources of meditation and questioning of the great myths of our civilizations. La Maison Laurentine will showcase works in progress from Lodestar France | 2015 as part of this year’s Opus 6 series. "This was the order of human institutions: first the forests, after that the huts, then the village, next the cities, and finally the academies." This reflection from Giambattista Vico (1668-1744) echoed by Robert Harrison in the opening of his book Forests: The Shadow of Civilization is the fundamental theme of each Opus proposed by La Maison Laurentine since it opened its doors in 2010. Each year the event aims to rediscover the pleasure of meeting with visitors, to blur conventional artistic paths, and provoke surprises: all in order to create the conditions for an open conversation, both uninhibited and stimulating. 7 A PLACE TO THINK
8 SPACE TO WORK
We will be based at Château de Faverolles, an artist residency and recording studio founded by Andy Rathgreb (sound artist, filmmaker and founder). Long established as a place for reflection and creativity not only for music and sound projects, but also dance and the visual arts, Château de Faverolles has beautiful, open studio spaces to work in, lounges and gardens for guest talks, and is surrounded by forest. 9 CHAMPAGNE +
