Our Perry Hampton Picnic on April 11th is the largest Members Only event of the year. Come have some great food, meet some of our former members, and join us to celebrate the memory of a well revered founding member of LCC, Perry Hampton. Here we will announce the 2014 winner of the Perry Hampton Memorial Award. 1984 marked the release of the C4 corvette. The car was actually an early release launching in March of 1983, but was still considered a 1984 model. Therefore, there is no such thing as a 1983 Corvette (Henshaw, 2013). The day after our picnic we will be join other area Corvette clubs on a cruise through the hill country and a day at the Florence Winery. They offer some great wine, food, and cigars. You can get to know some other Corvette owners while you sip on wine. Our Points Trail activities for April will be the Perry Hampton Picnic and the Cruise to Florence Winery. If you would like to organize an event or think of a fun activity for us to do please let me know. I am still looking for new Activities Director so please volunteer if you are interested. A Perry Hampton Memorial Award Article Written in 1982 by: Steve Hoes Note: This article was originally written and published in 1982 and again in 1992. Even though Steve Hoes is no longer with us the article still conveys the feeling many of us have about Perry and hopefully will help the LCC members who did not know Perry to understand and appreciate why we chose to commemorate him. A Few Thoughts on Perry Basically, I dislike writing articles; seems I feel I never have anything worthwhile to say; this time I feel a little differently. In the past I have talked to other members who knew Perry, and commented how important it was to keep the memory of Perry alive, but it seems it's never the correct forum to talk about Perry, and relive old memories and good times. Recently though, I realized many of our members did not know Perry, having joined the club after his death in 1979. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about him, and to refresh those memories of Perry, to those of you who did know him. Perry helped organize and found the club in 1973, after doing two tours of duty in Vietnam Nam. It was on this second re-enlistment that he was critically wounded, while helping a friend. Perry had just returned from his shift on patrol, when he found his relief too tired or hung over to take over. So, Perry volunteered to take his buddy's night patrol. While on patrol, Perry tripped on a land-mine and lost his leg in the process. Perry also received steel shrapnel and had numerous scars from the mine. Perry was often sick during the years I knew him, although most of his friends never knew. Perry suffered quietly, not wanting sympathy or to have his friends worry about his ill health. While in the hospital, and during subsequent recuperation, Perry once again took up an old hobby of taking pictures. Perry's favorite subject matter was children, followed by flowers, women, and anything else of beauty. Perry had a knack of catching people, and children in particular, off guard, but always to their best advantage, never embarrassing or crude. During the three years that I knew Perry, I came to respect and love him, for what he was, and what he believed in. He was always there in time of need, and would give unselfishly of himself to any and all. The first night I met Perry was at an after-meeting party. I walked into his house, he greeted me with a smile and warmth as if he had known me for life. He was like that to all he met. I never heard him say an unkind word against anyone. I think Perry felt like Will Rodgers in that, "He never met a man he didn't like," and conversely, no one ever met Perry who didn't like him. Perry was, and remains, the best, most gentle, caring person I have ever known. Perry loved women, putting them all on pedestals, where he said they belong. He told me once, that all women are beautiful, just some more than others. Perry tried hard to please, always putting others first, even when he was too sick to take care of himself. Perry went through hell in Nam, during a dozen or so operations, and months of therapy. He never complained; it was his duty; few people knew what exactly happened to Perry in Vietnam Nam, because he wasn't one to brag or complain about his situation. I didn't intend to ramble on this long, but I seldom get a chance to talk of Perry, and the type of person he was. Hopefully, in future years, old and new members will reflect on who Perry was, and remember that the main reason for the PERRY HAMPTON MEMORIAL AWARD is to honor the memory of Perry, a charter member of LCC, who gave his all for his country, his club, and above all else, his friends. Perry truly personified the word 'Friend.' This is my best memory of Perry. I hope each of us will learn a little of the good in Perry, and all be better persons for it. Perry believed, and passed it on. If you're not in the photo but was at the event you must have a selfie from the event that proves you were there. We’ve had 3 qualifying events so far this year; 1 in Jan. and 2 in Feb. (correction in months from last month’s BULLetin.) and 2 in March. Lind Christmas Party Chilly Chili Jerry Armstrong’s selfie! Meet the Members! Paul Treadwell Darren Johnson Welcome to Darren! My Vette is being built as we speak. It's a solid black with adrenaline red interior. ZO6 with the ZO7 performance package and an automatic transmission. Corvette Museum delivery option and the photo album option of the build as well. Should be ready in 810 weeks. We’re so excited and happy to hear not only that member Marty Lege is healed from her scary accident, but that she’s got herself a new ride!!! Here’s Marty’s new C7. Congrats! Darren has always had a love of Vettes and has had 4 in his life: a 1984 (gold), 1996 (collector edition convertible - silver/black), 1998 (convertible - pewter/black), and his current one…a 2005 Z51 Convertible in LeMans Blue. “I installed long tube headers and a full exhaust. I want a supercharger...” He has had this Vette for 7 years, it only has 24k miles on it! When asked, what fun things do you like to do with your car? He said: I enjoy pure performance and handling. I like to push the limits (and/or race) occasionally. Excited about joining the LCC, Darren is looking forward to meeting other Corvette enthusiasts. This will be my first Vette….so excited! It's been a longtime dream of mine to own one. We took our company public last year and it's time to order that dream. Order number was issued this past Monday. I can't wait to go to rallies, cruising, meet-ups and taking my wife for Sunday drives. The most important thing I want to get from the membership is meeting new people and talking about our dream cars. Hopefully some charity runs as well in the future. I'm an avid hunter and I'm currently trying to find and buy the right ranch and weekend getaway. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and providing pictures of the car before and during the build process. We’re also happy for Lee and Kelly Heins. They are a 2 Vette family now! See their latest addition…a 1984 with 63,000 miles. I'm 47 and happily married to my beautiful wife Erica for 12 years, we have 3 huge Maine Coon cats and no children (they don't fit in a Corvette). We live in Davis Spring (beside Avery Ranch off Parmer and 620). I love wakeboarding, tennis, racquetball, snowboarding, roller coasters, racing, guns, God, and pretty much anything that gives me an adrenaline rush! March - Business Meeting Notes Hi Herd! March Executive Meeting Notes * If you cannot open, please email [email protected] and I will email them to you. Here is our financial summary through February: February deposits were $927.85 and our expenditures were $390.76. Turkey Trouncer Racing Team – Reborn! Info from David Safely: The Racing team was established in conjunction with some other club establishing similar subgroups within the SW Region. The reason to re-establish this group is to help give some traction to the reemergence of the racing community within the club, by building camaraderie and creating a focus for the group. The purpose of this group is to help promote, participate in any way the Racing arm of the club, within NCCC. This is achieved either by volunteering time, resources and or racing in “any” NCCC event. I believe Tom Moore, Steve White, Mike Mitchell and Perry Hampton were amongst the first members of this “elite” group. Other notables along the way were Scott Reid, Steve Hoes, Bob and Carol Hammett, John and Gay Tiemann, Gail Mitchell, Stanley Martin, Morris and Jackie Bussey, Billy and Sarah House, Lynn Bailey, Toni Hartley, David Safely Larry Warrell and Jerry Stark. Others that may have been a part of this group were Alan Hill, Alan Waters, Mark Watson and Joe Raymond. Of course, I likely have missed a few as well. I am sure I have left off plenty of early members, as I only became a member in January 1984, 8 or 9 years later. Look forward to more info from David regarding the revitalization of this racing team. March’s cruise to PIE!!! Points Trail Events ***Thanks to Jerry Armstrong, Tammy & Lance Spracklen, and David Safely for the pictures*** There were 2 Points Trail Events in March…the RockNRides and the Corvettes and Crawfish.
