Vision
To be a world-class
high school.
It is hard to believe the school year is coming to an end with only 9 weeks
left of school! We have one full quarter left of high intensity academics and
assessments. It is VERY important now more than ever that you make sure
your son or daughter is in school daily on time. Parents, please make sure
you are checking your son or daughter's grades on ParentLink weekly. Also
interims are sent home every Friday.
In this newsletter you will find some very important information and
dates. Please make sure you mark your calendars and join us for the exciting upcoming
events we have planned.
In this last edition of the school year, I want to wish all of the seniors a fond farewell!
On behalf of the staff, we want to thank you for a wonderful four years. We wish you every
happiness as you go out into the world and make a difference. We hope that you will come
back and share your journey as you will always be in our hearts and a part of the Lehigh
Lightning Family!
Those students returning next year, please look for a newsletter again in July. This edition
will have important information and dates for the Fall. If any member of the LSHS staff or
I can assist you or your student, please do not hesitate to call upon us.
Sincerely,
Jackie Corey
Principal

When Lightning Strikes....... Thunder Rolls!
Advancement Via Individual Determination
The third quarter brought much excitement to AVID students and their families. Freshmen Breana Vega and Rahkeem Jaques Louis were
among those who were awarded the Take Stock in Children award! This award holds both students and parents/guardians accountable as
both must sign a performance contract. Students must remain alcohol, drug and crime free and must attain a minimum GPA of 2.5 by the
9th grade and graduate college. Congratulations to Breana and Rahkeem!
Center Happenings
Suessical the Musical
The theatre department performed Suessical the Musical for
elementary students all over the district.
In March, AVID hosted a parent information workshop entitled Student Success through Parental Involvement. Parents/guardians were
able to participate in interactive activities where they learned about graduation requirements including mandatory courses, end-of-course
exam requirements and standardized state tests. Guests also learned how to read an academic history form and were supplied with their
student's academic history and current grade report.
AVID classes hosted visits for representatives from Florida Gulf Coast University, the U.S. Army, Keiser University - specifically their
cyber forensics department and ITT Tech - in particular their Breckinridge Nursing department. They also visited both Florida International
University and Florida Memorial College.
More than half of the LSHS AVID Class of 2015 have received their college acceptance letters, and the letters keep pouring in. How
exciting it is for both students and teachers alike to have their hard work and best efforts validated by a college acceptance letter.
We look forward to an amazing fourth quarter!

Visual Arts
Congratulations to the students pictured below, they were big
winners in the Art Under 20 contest sponsored by Artfest Fort
Myers. The annual event was held in downtown Fort Myers in
February.
AVID San Diego Center Visit
During the latter part of January, the AVID Center Staff from San Diego really enjoyed their visit. While here they were able to learn about
our implementation of AVID school-wide. This information will help them better support schools across the country. In the AVID “World”
LSHS is considered exceptional because of our commitment and common approach to teaching and learning, along with our school culture.
The visitors were also able to collaborate with our AVID teachers about best practices, visit classrooms and talked with students and staff
throughout the day. They were highly impressed with the family feeling they experienced and the story of our AVID journey. Additionally,
they were amazed by our level of universal commitment that has contributed to our school being identified as exceptional.
The best compliment of the day… there are 148 Demonstration Schools in the United States. AVID Leadership believes that we are
among the top 5% in the nation!!! As teachers, being inside the box, it is hard to see just how amazing our school really is. LSHS's AVID
teachers demonstrate incredible commitment to always doing what it takes to fill their tool-belt, work as a team, implement PLC’s and spend
countless hours to do all of the little things that make a difference and yield unimaginable dividends for our students. This staff is simply
the BEST! Thank you for what you are doing today and every day to enrich our students' lives.

Chalk Art
Art in the Garden
Ms. Penuel’s Sculpture I class
participates in the Edison Ford
annual event, “Art in the Garden.”
The theme for 2015 is “Flowers in
the Garden.” Each art piece must
be made with recycled materials,
kinetic sculpture and placed with
materials that can withstand the
Southwest Florida environment:
rain, wind, and humidity. Students in the sculpture class learned
pyrography techniques and created wood burnt pieces of native
Florida flowers.
Icon Art Show
LSHS also had two teams participate in the annual Chalk Art
Contest at Artfest. The theme this year was "Bugs on Vacation",
the contest is sponsored by Truly Nolan.
AVID Visit
LSHS staff and the San Diego visitors participated in a
round table discussion of best practices in AVID.

The US Department of Education Visits Lehigh Senior
The United States Department of Education came down to visit Lehigh Senior all the way from Washington DC on April 13th
and 14th. They selected LSHS to do a story on what good schools look like that implement strong teaching practices, professional
development and professional learning communities. This is a huge honor for the LSHS staff as they have worked very hard to build
and sustain a collaborative culture that is very focused on teaching and learning. Two days of filming will be edited and produced
to create a video that will be shared all over the country as a solid example in the profession of teaching. Congratulations LSHS
Administration and Teachers!!!
LSHS Special Events
Life Skills
The students in Life Skills and Social
Communication are getting the school garden ready
for Spring! With generous donations from Mark
Tracy at Artful Gardens and Nick Bodven from
Caterpillars for Kids, our school butterfly garden
will soon be filled with beautiful butterflies. After
Spring Break, the students will be safely tagging
any butterflies that come around to track their
migration patterns. We will then send our data to the University of
Georgia for further research. In addition, the students have planted
some vegetable and herb plants in
Earth boxes to extend their learning
beyond the classroom. The next
time you are on your way to the
cafeteria or are passing by building
4, please stop by the garden and
take a look around.
Last week our students attended the Florida Repertory Theatre to
see Journey to Oz. They were asked to dress in professional clothes
as if they were attending a job interview.
