Outdoor Adventure
at the Oak Grove
Nature Center
Many children possess a natural curiosity for animals. Taking your child outdoors to observe wildlife
can be an inexpensive and fun way to increase their
curiosity and critical thinking skills. Connecticut has
many birds both big and small. Looking at wild birds
with your child is a great way to explore nature and
stay active as a family. To get started you can visit
your local library and take out a book on birds of the
Eastern United States. There’s no need to purchase
expensive binoculars or cameras. Simply head out to
the trails with your child to watch the birds fly overhead. Your child may become interested in the many
species of hawks, owls and song birds.
The very best time to see birds is during dawn and
dusk. During late spring and early summer hitting the
trails around 6:30-7pm will reveal a world of twittering wild birds. The Lutz Children’s Museum very
own Oak Grove Nature Center, only 1.5 miles from
the museum is the perfect spot for your first bird
watching adventure. The trails that weave around
the Nature Center pond are home to red-winged
blackbirds, white-breasted nuthatches, red-tail hawks
and even beautiful goldfinches. Birds are not the only
wildlife you may encounter while on your outdoor
adventure. The OGNC is home to white-tailed deer,
beavers and New England cottontails. As always don’t
forget to share your pictures with us on Instagram
and Twitter @Lutzmuseum and happy bird watching!
Oak Grove Nature Center is located at 269 Oak
Grove Street, Manchester, CT 06040

DIRECTOR’S COLUMN:
The museum is a nonprofit corporation
run by its members. An all-volunteer
board is elected by the general
membership to oversee finances
and set the general direction of the
organization. Our by-laws instruct us
to call an annual meeting to elect new
members to the Board of Trustees. A
slate of candidates will be presented
for a voice vote. We also take this
opportunity to present reports and
recognize our hard-working volunteers
and staff members.
Please join us at the museum on
Wednesday, May 13. Refreshments begin
at 5:30 PM. The meeting will be called
to order at 6:00 PM and should end
by 7:00 PM. Childcare will be available
during the meeting. I hope to see you
there.

Music Together Summer 2015
Collection Starts in Early July
Summer Collection is a great time to
try Music Together or to continue your
musical journey. Our Summer Songs
program will meet for seven sessions
with the last week serving as a makeup
for any session that may have been
missed.
Music Together classes are for children,
ages 0-5 and their grownups. Classes
build on your child’s natural enthusiasm
for music and movement.
These programs are delivered by a
certified Music Together educator, a
separate organization, with the support
of the Lutz Children’s Museum.
Visit www.lutzmuseum.org or call 860643-0949 for schedules, fees, and other
registration information.
Volunteer News
Our featured volunteer opportunity this month is gardening and landscaping. Spring is finally here. It is time to plant some flowers at the
museum and clear the trails at Oak Grove Nature Center. Please let us know if you or your group would like to lend a hand (and a rake).
Whatever your skills or interests, we always need your help. Volunteers range in age from teenagers to seniors. Contact Alixes Rosado at
860-643-0949 x.22 ([email protected]) for more information. The museum is a great place to meet friends and build skills while
making a difference in the lives of children.
