Exposure Therapy
Exposure therapy is a behavioral technique intended to expose clients to a triggering
situation without engaging in the maladaptive behavior that has become the normal
response. Typically, the only exposure therapy that clients with eating disorders receive is
in an inpatient setting. It is usually in the form of a meal at an outside restaurant and led
by a nutritionist. Unfortunately, most therapists are unable to offer exposure therapy
because of the constraints of standard outpatient practice. Mended Wing Counseling
offers exposure therapy as an adjunct to standard treatment.
As an adjunct, the entire exposure process would typically take four to eight sessions. A
primary therapist would identify and refer a client who is facing a particularly risky
situation or who has increased anxiety due to a particular stressor in their everyday life.
An example might be trying ice cream or buying new clothes. After the initial referral,
the first session would be an intake, in order to establish goals and assess one’s current
trigger management skills. The subsequent sessions would then depend on how anxiety
provoking the situation was and how effectively the client used their trigger management
skills. If the client were able to effectively utilize these skills, the next session would
involve a cognitive rehearsal and determination of how many sessions the actual
exposure might take.
The actual exposure experience can take anywhere from one to five sessions, depending
on the level of anxiety the client experiences and the complexity of the situation. For
example, buying new clothes will most likely entail more sessions than trying ice cream.
During the exposure sessions, the client and the Mended Wing therapist would meet at
the designated site and approach the situation using trigger management skills as
necessary. The final session is a debriefing, where the client, their primary therapist, and
the Mended Wing therapist would assess the effectiveness of the treatment and determine
if any future sessions might be warranted.

The National Association for Males with Eating Disorders
The National Association for Males with Eating Disorders (NAMED) is a non-profit
organization dedicated to supporting males with eating disorders and their families, in
addition to being a resource of information on the subject. Their website has a Support
Group Discussion Forum for both Males with Eating Disorders and Concerned Others.
This Forum may be a helpful resource to supplement the care men are currently receiving
from their existing treatment team.
The Males with Eating Disorders Forum provides a unique opportunity for males with
eating disorders in any location to share with others in recovery, while also receiving
much needed support for themselves. Boys and men often find that they are the only male
in a therapeutic setting, which usually leads to feelings of isolation. The NAMED
Support Group Discussion Forum for Males with Eating Disorders provides an excellent
opportunity for males seeking recovery to connect and support one another. Family
members of those with eating disorders will find the Concerned Others Forum helpful.
To access the Forum, go to www.NAMEDinc.org, and double click on the red box that
says “Support Groups”, which is located at the top right hand side of the page. If you

Walden Behavioral Care
Walden Behavioral Care is a national leader in the treatment of eating disorders
and psychiatric issues. Walden's success comes from its “whole health” approach,
which considers every aspect of each patient's healthcare needs including: medical
issues, psychiatric issues, co-occurring disorders, behavioral treatment, nutrition,
and the environment in which the patient is treated.
Walden recognizes that one type of treatment will not fit the needs of every patient
and that each patient enters treatment with different types of disorders, and at
different stages of an eating disorder or psychiatric disorder. For this reason,
Walden's “continuum of care” approach adapts treatment to match the changing
needs of patients as they progress toward recovery. For patients with eating
disorders, Walden's continuum of care includes: in-patient treatment (Waltham),
residential treatment (Waltham), partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient (at
all Walden Behavioral Care locations: Waltham, Northampton, Worcester, and
Braintree). An additional facility is opening soon in South Windsor, CT.
For more information, visit www.WaldenBehavioralCare.com or to schedule a
confidential screening, call (781) 647-6727 or email [email protected].
