Information - Living With Lymphedema

What is Lymphedema?
The lymphatic system collects excess fluid and
proteins from body tissues and carries them
back to the bloodstream. Lymphedema occurs
when the normal drainage is disrupted.
Secondary lymphedema refers to an insufficiency
of the lymphatic system that results from an
external trauma, such as surgical removal of the
lymph nodes, radiation therapy or traumatic
injury. Many cancer patients experience
secondary lymphedema as a result of surgery.
How is Lymphedema Treated?
More than 40% of cancer patients who undergo
surgery involving lymph nodes suffer
lymphedema, and while it is not curable, it is
treatable. To manage this condition, most
patients undergo therapy and must wear
elastic pressure garments including sleeves,
gloves and stockings that are not typically
covered by insurance. Each piece can cost over
$100, and many patients are unable to afford this
important part of their therapy. We are raising
funds for local cancer patients who are not able
to pay for their pressure garments. With your
help, we will help relieve their discomfort and
pain by providing a vital part of their treatment.
