fire causes $10,000 in damage and occurs once a month
in Orange County. Older
adults have the highest per
capita injury rate, according
to the Orange County Fire
Authority.
The Golden Rain Foundation Purchasing Department has several fire prevention aids that are available
for purchase.
• Stovetop Firestop is an
automatic fire suppressor
that people can install on
their venthoods. The small
cannister will drop powder
on the stove top when flames
touch it. Firestop for the
range hood costs $41.03 for a
pair; and for the microwave,
$77 per pair.
• Fire extinguisher, full
size, costs $28.34 each.
• Fire Gone, a 16-ounce
portable fire extinguisher, is
as effective as a full-sized
extinguisher on small fires.
It has a spray nozzle for easy,
quick dousing; $8.26 each.
There are 561 dogs registered in LW.
GRF Board will
consider dog park
The Golden Rain Foundation Recreation Committee
approved the concept of a dog
park in Leisure World at its
meeting March 9.
The committee recommendation came after the GRF Dog
Park Subcommittee voted to
approve further investigation
of a dog park. The subcommittee approval was based
in part on a petition signed
by shareholders who support
the park.

and doors of a gutted Mutual 11
apartment after a fire that caused
the displacement of at least five

and water damage on March 13.
At least two 911 callers reported the fire at Mutual 11 in
the 1600 block of Northwood
Road at 4:36 p.m. that Friday,
according to a fire report and an
eyewitness. Firefighters were on
scene at 4:41 p.m., and the fire
was under control by 5:15 p.m.,
according to Orange County Fire
Authority (OCFA) Capt. Steve
Concialdi.
No one was injured.
“I came out of my unit and
smelled smoke. I thought it
was the laundry room at first,
then I saw smoke from the next
building. I heard the windows
popping, and fire shot out,” said
Pat Venable, who was one of the
911 callers.
The occupant of the engulfed
apartment also called 911, according to fire officials.
Venable said she saw the occupant, who is a friend, emerge from
her unit with smoke billowing
behind her. Venable and another
shareholder, Gene Weller, ran to
evacuate the rest of the building

The Orange County Fire Authority serves nearly 1.8 million
residents in 580 square miles, including more than 173,000 acres of
wildland area. It has 23 partner cities, including Los Alamitos, Seal
Beach, Westminster, and unincorporated Orange County areas like
Rossmoor. OCFA employs 451 firefighters.

units and cordoned off the scene.
The fire damaged six units,
Concialdi said.
Four units were red-tagged,
which means they are a total loss,
and two were yellow-tagged. That
means residents cannot live there
until the interiors are repaired,
but they are allowed to retrieve
belongings, according to the GRF
Security Department and OCTA.
Security staff coordinated
emergency housing for displaced
residents at local hotels and a
security officer was posted at
the damaged building overnight.
About 50 firefighters and
emergency personnel responded
from all over the region. OCFA
had nine engines and units, and
trucks and police came from Los
Alamitos, Long Beach, Garden
Grove, Huntington Beach, Riverside and the Seal Beach Naval
Weapons Station.
Firefighters vented the roof
with chainsaws, picks and axes.
The cause of the fire is under
investigation.

Samuel Calderon of Mutual 1 was stunned to see a letter from
Convergent Outsourcing Inc., a collection agency based in Renton,
Washington arrive at his Mutual 1 residence last week.
“Records show a past due balance of $722.03, but our client (Dish
Network) is willing to accept half that amount by if it is received
within 30 days.”
How nice.
Calderon was given three “convenient” ways to make payment,
email, phone or U.S. mail. Using any would mean financial ruin for
consumers, who would have to pay by credit card or personal check.
Calderon, however, has excellent credit, always pays his bills
and has no credit cards. So he solicited the help of neighbor Kathy
Almedia.
The letter from the agency looks professional, bearing no resemblance to so many others printed on poor quality paper and rife
with misspellings.
A quick Google search produced an alarming 147 complaints
from consumers against Convergent. One woman claimed that she
was called three times within one minute on March 10, but no messages were left.
Others allege the company will not send a copy of the collection
letter when requested.
On its website, Convergent, also known as ER Solutions, claims
it uses “high ethical standards and strict adherence to applicable
laws, regulations, and policies.”
However, its activities are in clear violation of Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a federal
law established in 1981 that’s
basically a laundry list of what
debt collectors can and cannot do.
According to public records,
Convergent has been sued over
150 times in the last three years
for harassing consumers.
In addition, the Better Business Bureau, processed almost
200 billing/collection issues
regarding Convergent over the
last three years.
As we advised Calderon,
ignore collection letters from
Convergent.
The California Retired Teachers’ Association (CalRTA) will
meet at noon on April 3 in Clubhouse 2.

at NBC News. He will discuss
the humorous side of aging. The
event will include lunch. Reservations are required by calling Sue

Peace vigil is
on March 25
Senior Patriots for Peace will
hold a peace vigil in front of the
Globe outside the Leisure World
main gate from 5-6:30 p.m. on
March 25.
Due to the return of Daylight
Saving Time, the vigils now
begin at 5.
The group holds monthly vigils to call attention to the need for
a return to peace with a renewed
tolerance of others.
To that end, the club additionally focuses on issues of social
justice and the environment to
nurture a world where people can
live healthy and peaceful lives for
generations.
Residents with concerns about
U.S. military action against ISIS,
immigration reform, the extension of the Keystone Pipeline and
how it affects the environment,
or other issues, are invited to
the vigil.
They are welcome for any
block of time between 5-6:30 p.m.

Attending OLLI classes at Cemeteries and State, Assembly introduce
CSULB both fun and easy memorial parks new bills at the 11th hour

It always surprises me when I tell someone I’m taking an OLLI
class. They ask “what’s that?” OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute) is a program offered by California State University, Long
Beach, since 1976 that allows seniors to take classes for their personal
enrichment and the sheer joy of lifelong learning.
There are no tests or homework required, and no degrees are
earned. There are no pre-requisites, so anyone can enroll.
OLLI offers a variety of up-to-date topics such as politics, art,
drawing, music, computers, famous authors, movies, opera and many
more. To see if there are any classes of interest, access the spring
schedule at http://web.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/centers/olli/classes/.
Additionally, the OLLI publication “The Sun” is available in the
Leisure World library. It contains the schedule of classes and the
registration form to complete and mail in without having to leave
LW. OLLI offers approximately 80 classes each quarter with the
majority in CSULB classrooms.
However, each quarter there are five or six classes given in LW
clubhouse classrooms so there is no need to travel outside our four
walls to enrich the mind.
The spring schedule of classes in LW April 13-June 8 include
“The Short Story: Tales and Parables,” (stories that entertain, challenge, and enlighten); “Laugh! Laugh! And More,” (a study of the
most famous comedians of the 20th century); “Watercolor Painting,”
(learn to paint with watercolors); “Longevity Stick,” (learn to prevent
disease, protect your health, and increase concentration); “Philosophy
in an Age of Science,” (analyzing basic concepts, probing widespread
assumptions, and exploring ethics in the age of science); and “Acting
with Alice,” (discover one’s talent).
So next time I say I’m taking an OLLI class, instead of asking
“what’s that?” I hope you’ll say “I’m taking one too.”

Memorial parks around the
country are more than places for
the deceased.
They are definitely places
used to inter our departed loved
ones; however, they are truly
more a place for the living.
Cemeteries allow the living to cherish their loved
ones generations after the
death occurs.
My first
memory of a
cemetery was
on television
while watching a movie. Julie Correa
The memory left me with the
idea that cemeteries were dark,
cold and gloomy places with big
tombstones.
I remember images of zombies hiding behind trees and
walking around the grounds at
night. That made me feel as if
they were a very eerie place to
visit. However, that was probably because I was at a slumber
party staying up late watching
scary movies.

Feb. 27 was the deadline for bills to be introduced
this Legislative year. That doesn’t mean there
won’t be more new proposals before lawmakers
recess Sept. 11.
As the session progresses, there will be “gut
and amend” proposals that will make their way in
the months to come; some will even rise from the
“dead” files.

The Senate introduced 793 bills, down from
813 in 2013 and the lowest number in a session’s first year since
1989, according to the Secretary of the Senate.
The assembly introduced 1,504, up from 1,376 in 2013. The last
time there were so many lower house bills in the first year of the
session was 2009, when members introduced 1,539. Some of the
legislation of note to shareholders:
• Legalization of aid in dying for terminally ill people;
• Bill to get high-speed Internet access to the deaf
• Public places like theaters to have changing stations for disabled adults
• Granting tax breaks to the terminally ill for medical marijuana
Some represent ambitious district-specific issues and far-reaching
policy changes,and others tweak new laws with “cleanup” language,
etc.

and the shareholders over many
years. What better way to create
and sustain a community such as
Leisure World then by volunteering time toward the governance
of this incredible lifestyle we all
enjoy?
This community was founded
on the premise that the mutual
boards and the elected board
directors would set into opera-
tion the day-to-day business of
each mutual corporation. Directors address the issues of most
importance to their electorate,
that is, the shareholders. Board
directors find solutions to existing problems, large and small.
This is not an easy job. It takes
time, effort and a willingness to
unselfishly donate a portion of
a person’s everyday life to the
community in which they live.
Seal Beach Leisure World is
full of highly qualified shareholders who have so much expertise
to offer, such as knowledge of
construction, plumbing and accounting, just to name a few.
New ideas and perspectives are
always needed and that means
volunteers are needed. Please

Redeemer Lutheran
Sunday service will begin with a
mission moment by Flo Nesland
This Sunday’s 10:30 a.m. service at Redeemer Lutheran Church
begins with a mission moment presentation by Flo Nesland. The
sermon by Pastor Gil Moore is titled “Listen!” based on John 12:2033. The service will be followed by a coffee hour. The reader will be
Cedric Elmer. The prayer leader will be Shirley Reimers.
The choir will be under the direction of Sharon Heck.
Altar flowers will be from Larry and Judy Norlander in honor of
their wedding anniversary; and from Ron and Linda Robertson in
honor of granddaughter Jocelyn Jane Thurner’s birthday.
A spring boutique will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on March 25 in
the fellowship hall.
The last Lenten soup supper devotion begins at 4 p.m. featuring
a dialogue from the crossroads on the cross.
The Bible class meets at 10:30 a.m. that day in the sanctuary, and
will be a study of Genesis, 33-35.

Missionary is guest today
Jeff David, missionary to
Cuba, will be minister at 10:30
a.m. on March 22 at Faith Christian Assembly.
David has been a missionary
in Latin America for the last 25
years. Since 2013, he and his wife,
Barbi, have shifted their focus of
ministry to Cuba.
David founded The Caribbean
Initiative, which seeks to provide
Cuban pastors and church planters with mentoring, theology

Calvary Chapel Bible Study

To take advantage of its immediate access to the large parking lot in the center, the church
mans the alleyway gate with Alley
Gators, volunteers who monitor
the gate each Sunday before and
after services.
With limited parking in front
of the church, access from the alley provides quick and easy entry.
Those who want to attend
services but have difficulty with
parking are invited to park in the
center and cross the alley to the
gate behind the church.
There, Alley Gators will provide directions to the sanctuary.
The church invites the community to participate in the Lenten

THE LEISURE WORLD ORCHESTRA is seeking people to play orchestral instruments—
french horn, violin, trombone, trumpet among others. The group particularly needs more
string players, but all musicians are welcome. Rehearsals are held at Community Church

Genealogy Workshop
Immigration is meeting topic
“Immigration and Naturalization” will
be the topic of the Genealogy Club meeting
at 10 a.m. on March 25 in Clubhouse 3,
Room 1. The social time begins at 9:30. All
are welcome.
Guest speaker Bonnie Elsten will talk
about how to find immigrant ancestors by using immigration and naturalization records.
Elsten is a longtime genealogist and
retired educator. Currently, she is a volunteer instructor at OLLI@CSULB, where
she teaches “Click Start Your Genealogy Bonnie Elsten
Research” and several Macintosh computer
classes. The Genealogy Workshop Library is open from 1-4 p.m.
on Tuesday-Thursday and from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on the second
Saturday of the month.
On Saturdays, enter through the outside patio door as religious services are being held in the lobby.
A discussion group meets at this library three Wednesdays

Cabaret Entertainers
Nightclub entertainment comes March 27
The Cabaret Entertainers and Suede Sole Dancers will host shows
at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. on March 27 in Clubhouse 4. Cabaret Entertainers feature singers Bette Fritz and club president Tommy Williams, piano playing by Bert Carroll and the Suede
Sole Dancers in colorful costumes dancing lyrical performances. Pat
Erickson is the choreographer and Suede Sole Dancers instructor.
Newcomers Judy Duvall and Luz Contreras will be featured.
Duvall of Mutual 3 brings a love of blues and jazz ballads, including
the work of Etta James, Martha Washington, Karen Carpenter and
Anne Murray. Lifelong stage fright kept her from singing in public
until she met Bert Carroll, a musician who lives in Mutual 14. She
credits Carroll with her newfound confidence about singing on stage.
The show will include a wide range of music and dance. Cabaret
Entertainers Phase 2 is an offshoot of Bob Fritz’s Cabaret Entertainers. It will retain the professional ambiance and talent of the original
singers and include music from the baby boomer years.
There will be dancers, back-up vocalists, comedy and a witty

Right outside Leisure World’s St. Andrews Gate is the Primrose Cafe. It’s an easy walk or drive, or people can take the bus.
The cafe is open from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. It offers a full menu,
reasonable prices and indoor or outdoor seating. There is also
a full bar so people can enjoy a cocktail, wine or beer with
their meal.
There is a senior menu that includes salad or soup plus dessert
with your entree. The help staff is friendly. The food is cooked

GRF Movie
“Elsa and Fred,” rated PG-13, will be shown at 2 and 7 p.m. on

When Fred, a retired 77-year-old hypochondriac widower, moves
to an apartment in Madrid, his temperamental daughter Cuca has an
incident with his next-door neighbor, the elder Argentinean Elsa.
Later, they meet each other, and Elsa seduces Fred with her reckless
behavior and world view.

LW CHORALE—“An Afternoon with the Masters” will be presented at the next concert of the
LW Chorale at 2 p.m. on March 21 in Clubhouse 4. The show will feature popular songs that

Astronomy Club
View night sky through large telescope
The Astronomy Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. on April 1 in Clubhouse
3, Room 3. There will be a program on how to find astronomical
objects in the night sky. That will be followed by a DVD on “The
Violent Nature of Our Universe.”
The meeting will conclude with night viewing through the club’s
ten-inch Dobsonian deep space telescope.
Coffee and snacks will be provided.

Classes will begin next week in CH 5
The Leisure World Computer Club will offer a variety of classes
starting March 23 from 9-11:15 a.m. in the Computer Lab of Clubhouse 5, located on ground level. People can sign up for classes at

The Leisure World Computer Club offers more than 30 different
classes to help residents learn about electronic devices, which can
strengthen communication among family members.
One hour of training can save hours of confusion when trying to
operate a new device. The Leisure World computer lab is handicap
accessible.
Computer Club members have consulted and trained clients at
Deloitte Touche, General Electric and for the U.S. military.
Members have given over 1,000 training days in Leisure World
over the past 10 years.

Mini Farmers Club
The Mini Farmers will meet at 9 a.m. on March 26 in Clubhouse
3, Room 2. Amending the third addendum to the constitution about
fencing will be discussed along with an update on the splitting of
plots to accommodate new members.
Awards will be given for best and most improved plots among
several other categories. Honorable mentions will also be awarded.

Dance Group hosts dances on the

Community Karaoke singers prepared for St. Patrick’s
Day last week with songs like “Danny Boy,” sung by both
Bob Barnum and Ren Villanueva. Joe Sabroso did “My Wild
Irish Rose,” followed by Ray Jarris, “McNamara’s Band”; Joe
Mesner, “I’m Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover”; and Ken
Harpham, “My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean,” among others.
First-time singers Rudy and Lita Fernando did an anniversary
duet of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.”
Pete Tupas, Ray Jarris and Ren Villanueva sang three songs
in memory of Rick Reynado, who was a faithful member of
the Karaoke Club. They sang Reynado’s favorites: “My Way,”
“This Love of Mine” and “Let Me Try Again.”
Community Karaoke meets in Clubhouse 1 each Wednesday
from 5:30-10 p.m.

FRIENDS OF LIBRARY DISPLAY—Nancy Hayes of Mutual
7 is sharing 50 years of cameras in the display cases at the
Leisure World Library through the end of April.
Friends of LW Library
Camera collection is on display
The Leisure World Library has a unique display of 50 years of
cameras in its display cases. Nancy Hayes, who moved to Mutual 7
two years ago from Long Beach, is sharing part of her vast camera
collection, which details the progression of photography through
the years. Nancy is president of the Photo Arts Club and a member
of the Video Producers and Sunshine clubs. Her photography is on
display in the halls Clubhouse 3.
Among the unique cameras in her collection is a small 1950s spy
camera that uses 110 film. The display also includes a 1926 35-mm
Nikon, and a stainless steel Dutch-made camera from 1946.
The LW Library is open from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., weekdays,
and from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

International Week. Jojo Weingart (l-r) and dancers Yumi Kaneko, Keiko Kawamoto, Sara

hula in both the ancient and modern styles. The audience broke into thunderous applause
when it was told that Keiko’s two sons and Yumi’s four daughters graduated from Marina High

When the works of
Gilbert and Sullivan
burst onto the London
theater scene in 1871,
they caused a sensation.
Humorous and melodic,
their 14 operettas have
entertained audiences
ever since. The D’Oyly
Carte Opera Company Brooke Lohman and Chris Yeschenko
performed the operettas in “The Mikado.”
in repertoire until its closure in 1982. Times had changed by 1982,
and the D’Oyly Carte did not change with them, resulting in their
productions becoming dated and stagnant.
In 1980 a new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates
of Penzance” opened in New York. It featured actors like Kevin Kline
and rock stars like Linda Ronstadt. It was a campy romp, a huge success, and pumped new blood into the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
That production spawned a revival that continues today. Community theaters particularly produce the shows because of the savings,
as the shows have no royalties because they are in public domain.
The latest entry in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan is the Attic Theatre’s production of “The Mikado.” It is a production that attempts,
unsuccessfully, to present the operetta in the style of camp and fun.
In Imperial Japan, Nanki Poo (Chris Yeschenko), the son of the
emperor, or Mikado, is told that he must marry the older and unattractive Katisha (Becki Daher). But Nanki Poo has fallen in love
with Yum Yum (Brook Lohman), ward to the high executioner of
the village of Titipu.
Nanki Poo leaves the court, disguises himself as a lonely minstrel,
and proceeds to Titipu to claim Yum Yum. Alas, the high executioner,
Ko Ko (Brian Crawford), has declared Yum Yum for himself. But
not to fear, as all ends mostly happily, with Yum Yum and Nanki
Poo being married at the finale.
“The Mikado” was one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s greatest successes. It’s survival is mostly due to its terrific score, which contains
“A Lonely Minstrel I,” “Three Little Maids,” “I’ve Got a Little List,”
“A More Humane Mikado” and “Willow, Tit-Willow.”
Director Stacy Holmes opted for the campy, humorous version
of “The Mikado.” However, not all of the cast members seem to
be aware of that. Several key roles have been miscast with singers
whose acting skills are limited, and not with actors who sing. The
result is an uneven evening.
In the lead role of Ko Ko, Brian Crawford lacks the experience
and comic skills for such a complicated role and style. He may be
able to do the role in years to come, but right now he is not ready.
Historically, the most successful performances of Ko Ko have been
by comedians, including even Groucho Marx.
As the romantic couple, Yum Yum and Nanki Poo, Brooke Lohman
and Chris Yeschenko are delightful. Yeschenko’s charming voice
and matinee idol looks are a feast for the eyes and ears. As Poo Bah,
right hand man to Ko Ko, Matt Koutroulis is appropriately funny.
There is still life in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, and especially “The Mikado.” However, it takes special skills and talent,
and a consistency in the style throughout the evening to succeed.
Though this production does succeed in moments, it never pulls it
together for the entire evening.

Holly Weber, a Leisure World resident, will teach the course Feel
Great Again: Understand and Maximize Your Brain Biochemistry.
The six-week course will be offered at the Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute at CSULB in the main campus, Room 101, on Mondays
from 10-11:30 a.m. The session begins April 13 and ends on May 18.
Using the research of Eric Braverman, M.D., and others, the class
will study four brain types and uncover the relationship between foods,
moods and illnesses. Dr. Braverman’s book “The Edge Effect” will
be used as the text (available on Amazon and at Barnes & Nobel).
During the course, each student will discover her/his dominant
brain biochemical and will learn to support that brain type with
specific foods and natural supplementation.

John Schulz will exhibit artwork March 20
The Art League will sponsor
a Spotlight on the Artist featuring the work of John Schulz at a
reception from 1-3 p.m. on March
20 in Clubhouse 4.
Schulz earned a bachelor’s of
science degree from California
State University at Los Angeles
and, following graduation and
military service, had a successful
career in business.
Schulz and his wife, Anita,
an accomplished musician and
photo artist, have been residents
in Leisure World for 15 years.
Schulz had a strong interest
in art from a young age through
high school and college.
When he retired in 2000, he
began formal studies in the fine
arts by enrolling in art courses at
various community colleges and
attending workshops offered by
professional artists. John and Anita spent a considerable amount
of time in Mexico absorbing the

These influences are evident in
his paintings.
Through his studies he explored a wide variety of art media.
“Art has become important to me
as a form of creative expression,
and I enjoy following it to see
where it takes me,” he said.
His work includes landscapes,
portraiture and social commentary executed in varied mediums.

LBSO Pops!
Grammy-award winner returns to podium
On Saturday, March 28, the Long Beach Symphony POPS! will
groove to rhythms from around the world featuring the music of
Jobim, Tito Puente and Sergio Mendes, among others.
The one-night-only concert at the Long Beach Arena will honor
the Port of Long Beach and the Waterfront Community for their
support of Long Beach Symphony’s free, music education programs.
Guest conductor and Grammy Award-winner Matt Catingub will
return to the podium for his third appearance with the Long Beach
Symphony, demonstrating his talents on piano, saxophone and vocals.
Joining him on the stage will be drummer Steve Moretti, a twotime Grammy Award nominee and winner of two Telly Awards. His
performances have been described as “powerful” (World-Herald)
and “full of subtle nuance and excitement” (Cleveland Classic). Moretti has had an extensive recording career and recently made
his movie debut playing live in the 2014 Clint Eastwood film, “Jersey Boys.”
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia will present the symphony a
Proclamation honoring its 80th anniversary of serving the community. Concert-goers may bring picnic dinners and beverages or order
from one of the arena’s many caterers. There will be dance areas for
those who want to celebrate. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for dining and
mingling; the concert begins at 8 p.m. Arena seating starts at $21.

someone who is are invited to attend.
Parkinson’s Support Group
There will be no meeting in April, but members are encouraged to
attend the second annual Parkinson’s Disease Patient and Caregiver
Symposium from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on March 20 in Newport Beach.
Dr. Kaspil Sethi, MD, professor of neurology will speak on
emerging therapies for Parkinson’s Disease.
Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Ageless Grace
Ageless Grace, a fitness class, will meet from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on

practiced in a chair for greater stability, safety range of motion and
increased core strength.
A second eight-week session will begin April 6.

The group meets at 4 p.m. every Monday in front of the Amphitheater for a one-hour walk.
The activity is not strenuous, but residents should check with their
doctors if they have been recently ill.

Pilates Club
No-impact exercise classes for men and women that improve
balance, strengthen the body core and improve coordination are
held Thursdays.
Chair classes for beginners are from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Clubhouse
6, Room A, and mat classes are from 6-7 p.m. in Clubhouse 6, Room
C. Pilates or yoga experience is preferred for mat classes.
Chair classes are taught by a certified pilates instructor and mat
classes, by a certified personal trainer. Cost is $7 per class.

Upper Body Strength Class
One-hour classes are offered from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on

The fee is $4 per class, payable at the start of the month, or $5 a
class for those who do not attend regularly.
Participants engage in warm-ups, light weightlifting, standing yoga
poses for balance improvement (no mat needed), moderate aerobic
moves and cool-downs. All levels of ability are welcome.

Seniors Keeping Fit offers low-impact cardio dance and hand

recent passing of bowling great
Fred Riccilli, a player in the LW
league for many years. He was
on television with other greats
such as Don Carter, Dick Webber
and Buzz Fazio. Riccilli was one of the sport’s
pioneers and helped make bowling the popular game it is today.

Tournament Poker Club
Women’s Golf Club
LW will pay tribute to Special
Olympics with golf tournament
At the end of the month, Leisure World will do its part to honor
participants in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. The LW Women’s Golf Club will hold a charity golf tournament
at the local course on March 31.
The World Games will be held July 25- Aug. 2 featuring 7,000
athletes from 177 countries.
Fifty-four golfers will take part at 8:30 a.m. in the coed shotgun
scramble. Doughnuts and coffee will be provided preceding the event.
A luncheon and silent auction in Clubhouse 2 will follow the
tournament. No more tickets are available to play in the event.
Gelson’s will cater the luncheon, and Caremore is providing pies
from Polly’s for dessert.
The tournament ise sponsored by Berkshire Hathaway real estate
agents Kathy Gupton, Gloria Hadley, Robin Gray, Barbara Dobias,
Vickie Van Ert, Susie Allen, Mary Chittick and Jim Duncan; State

our Find Typo contest, you may win a $25 Starbuck’s gift card in our monthly

Many parks have ponds and water fountains, beautiful statuary
and distinguished family memorials throughout their grounds. Forest
Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries was a pioneer in the memorial parks concept. Forest Lawn has been in the Southern California
community for over 100 years.
Many memorial parks around the country have community events.
One of the most popular is Memorial Day. Veterans, active members
of the military, and community dignitaries are invited each year to
celebrate with ceremonies that honor our fallen heroes and those
who served our country.
At most locations, the local Boy Scouts place American flags at
veterans’ gravesites. If you haven’t seen American flags displayed
at a memorial park before, it’s spectacular.
As a valuable service to the families they serve, memorial parks
and many mortuaries provide grief seminars. They are meant to provide coping skills to help them grow through the grieving process.
In December, Forest Lawn also puts together candle lighting
memorial services to honor the memory of loved ones.
Over the years, and because of their beauty, memorial parks have
been used by the communities they serve for special family events.
Over 30,000 couples have been married at Forest Lawn throughout at its six memorial parks, including Ronald Reagan. He married
his first wife, actress Jane Wyman, at the Glendale location on Jan.
26, 1940.
Forest Lawn also has a museum at its Glendale location that can
be attended year round for no charge. There are different exhibits
throughout the year such as the Light and Passion Stained Glass
exhibit and an eclectic collection of bronze sculptures.
Currently on display is an exhibit called “Revolutions 2, The
Art of Music.”

Loftin, Marjorie R.
1931-2015
Marjorie R. Loftin, 83, Mutual
1, died March 1, 2015.
She was born Oct. 23, 1931, in
Bakersfield, California, to Howard and Irene
Meneray.
She married Rudy Loftin on Feb. 26,
1956, in Bakersfield and
was a proud
homemaker.
The Loftins moved to
Leisure World from Westminster
in 2005.
She was a member of several
singing groups and enjoyed playing her 100-year old piano. She
also loved travel and outdoor
sports, including tennis, swimming, water skiing and camping.
Marjorie is survived by her
husband, Rudy; four children,
Candi Towe, Tim Loftin, Sue
Coleman and David Loftin; six
grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
A celebration of her life, directed by the family, will be held
at noon on March 21 in Clubhouse
3, Room 1.

Aurelio Sanchez, 86, Mutual
2, passed away Feb. 27, 2015.
He was surrounded by his wife
and family.
Aurelio, who used the nickname “Butch,” is survived
by his wife
of almost 60
years, Phyllis,
daughter Judy,
son-in-law
Gary, daughter Joanne,
daughter Julie and sonin-law John;
grandchildren, Amanda, Nathan,
Curtis, Daniel and Joshua; and
great-grandsons, Isaiah and Seth.
Butch is also survived by three
siblings, Antonia, Dolores and
Carmen.
Butch was born in Butte, Montana, the sixth of 10 children born
to Antonio and Dionisia Sanchez.
He was just an infant when his
parents moved to Los Angeles.
Butch served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a part
of Company B, 32nd Infantry. He
was awarded a Purple Heart with
Oak Leaf Clusters and a Bronze
Star. He became a life member of
the VFW Post 9148, La Mirada,
California.
Butch retired in 1985 after
30 years of service for Western
Electric, a division of AT&T.
A memorial Mass will be held
at 10 a.m. on March 28 at Holy
Family Church.
