OVERVIEW
7
UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS
The first stage of any treatment is your
consultation. Depending on the treatment
and outcome you have in mind, your
consultation will be with an appropriate
Bupa dermatologist, cosmetic doctor,
nurse or therapist. Following your
consultation, you are under no obligation
to proceed with treatment.
We understand that choosing a treatment
is an important decision, which is why we
place particular emphasis on your initial
consultation. This session is designed to
provide an opportunity to talk through
your requirements and discuss any
concerns you might have in a relaxed
and comfortable setting. Each cosmetic
consultation begins with an in-depth skin
assessment. Depending on your proposed
treatment, this may involve using a
UV scanner to examine the surface of
your skin. In the case of a laser treatment
it would involve determining your skin
type and performing a small test.
8
Having identified your needs, our
consultant will then recommend a course
of treatment, offering you the opportunity
to discuss their recommendations in detail,
the outcome you can expect and any
after-care that may be required. By the
end of your consultation you will have
all the information you need to begin
treatment, should you decide to proceed.
For your peace of mind, we endeavour
to ensure that the specialist you meet
at your consultation is responsible
for your treatment.
All our cosmetic treatment team are
trained and experienced, allowing them
to recommend a suitable treatment
for your skin.

OUR SERVICES EXPLAINED
Skin cancer checks. If you are concerned
about the risks of skin cancer, or about
an existing skin lesion that has changed
in some way, our consultants offer a
thorough examination of your body
to detect suspicious lesions or moles
that may require further investigation.
Should treatment be required, our on-site
dermatology team can perform a biopsy
or removal of a lesion – often during the
same appointment. The biopsy procedure
is quick and you should be able to return
to work the same day. This service also
includes expert advice on reducing your
personal risk of developing skin cancer.
Mole removal. Simple skin lesions such
as moles are usually entirely harmless,
but they can often be unsightly or
uncomfortable if they catch or rub on
clothing. Whilst their removal for cosmetic
reasons is no longer covered by the NHS
or health insurance, Bupa offers a selffunded service. Moles and skin tags can
be excised or removed by shaving or
cauterisation – your dermatologist will
advise which procedure is most suitable
for you. You should be able to return to
work immediately after either treatment.
Acne. Acne is a common skin condition
that typically affects teenagers and
young adults. Whilst rarely serious, it
is a condition that can be extremely
distressing both socially and professionally.
Our dermatologist can advise you on an
appropriate course of treatment for your
individual skin type, conducting further
investigations if appropriate. This service
10
is complimented by our cosmetic
treatment specialists who can provide
treatments and specialist products to
help control your symptoms or improve
the appearance of any scarring.
Polycystic ovary syndrome. This
condition is a combination of ovarian
cysts, acne, hirsutism and obesity that
is diagnosed by a simple blood test and
ultrasound scan. Our dermatologists can
recommend an individual acne treatment
and appropriate lifestyle changes to help
relieve your other symptoms. This service
is complimented by dietetic advice and our
cosmetics treatment team who can provide
laser hair removal and advice on improving
the appearance of any acne scarring.
Psoriasis and eczema. These two
long-term conditions are very common
inflammatory skin diseases which
can cause significant discomfort and
embarrassment. Our dermatologists can
accurately diagnose your condition and
prescribe a range of treatments suited
to your individual skin type.
Warts and verrucas. Whilst rarely
serious, warts and verrucas can be
both troublesome and unsightly. Our
dermatology team offer a range of
treatments to tackle these conditions,
including cryotherapy which uses
liquid nitrogen to freeze the area.
Your consultant may recommend
immunotherapy, which is a process that
stimulates your immune system to fight
the condition, or an injection of Bleomycin
directly into the wart or verruca itself.

OUR SERVICES EXPLAINED
ACNE TREATMENTS
LINE AND WRINKLE TREATMENTS
Acne and its associated scarring can have
a real impact on your quality of life and
self-confidence. Most common amongst
teenagers, acne can also affect people well
into their adult life.
Simple actions such as drinking plenty
of water and maintaining a good skincare
routine can help keep lines and wrinkles
at bay. However, things such as stress,
smoking, sun exposure, atmospheric
pollution and simply modern life in
general can all contribute to wrinkles
appearing prematurely.
Our cosmetic treatment specialists will
devise a bespoke package of treatment
that is specifically designed for your skin.
By combining proven medicines, products
and treatments, our team will work with
you to help take control of your acne and
improve the overall appearance of your
skin. Our treatments are not just limited
to facial acne either, our experts can
treat other areas of the body prone to
the condition such as backs and chests.
Whatever type or severity of acne you
suffer, we have effective treatments
that can help, along with the specialist
expertise required to lessen scarring.
MINOR SURGICAL PROCEDURES
If you are concerned about the appearance
or awkward position of a minor skin lesion
such as a mole, skin tag or scar, we are
here to help. Our cosmetic treatment
specialists use a range of safe and
convenient procedures to remove them
– often quickly enough to have done
during your lunch break. Please refer to
the Medical Dermatology section of this
brochure for more information.
12
Bupa’s range of non-surgical cosmetic
treatments can help make your skin look
fresher and more youthful by helping
combat the tell-tale signs of early
skin ageing.
AREAS WHICH CAN BE TREATED
oo
Frown lines between eyes
oo
Forehead lines
oo
‘Crow’s feet’ around the eyes
oo
Lines around the mouth.
Our cosmetic treatment specialists offer a
range of treatments for lines and wrinkles,
including injections such as dermal fillers.
These, combined with other procedures
such as skin rejuvenation can significantly
enhance the overall result of your
treatment – creating a younger,
fresher looking you.
You can find out about the benefits
of each individual treatment on the
following pages.
COSMETIC TREATMENTS
WRINKLE TREATMENTS
DERMAL FILLERS
These treatments are often used to reduce
frown lines, forehead lines and the ‘crow’s
feet’ that form around the eyes.
This procedure can be used to create fuller
lips or fill out unsightly lines around the
mouth, nose and cheeks to create a subtle,
smoother appearance.
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
Wrinkle treatments target specific facial
muscles. This helps to stop the formation
of lines and wrinkles, resulting in a
smoother, more youthful appearance.
The whole process usually takes less than
30 minutes, making it ideal for fitting
into your busy schedule. You may
encounter a small amount of swelling
or bruising after the treatment, which
may last a few days.
The full cosmetic benefits of each wrinkle
treatment take effect within around
14 days and can last for up to four months,
so it’s perfect for those special occasions
such as birthdays or weddings. Before your
first course of treatment your cosmetic
treatment specialist will discuss the results
you can expect to see and when you might
need to repeat the treatment to maintain
your desired appearance.
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
A skin-friendly gel is injected into deep
wrinkles to lift and smooth out the skin.
Whereas wrinkle treatments affect the
muscles that cause lines, dermal fillers
work by filling the wrinkles or creases
to add volume to the skin. The treatment
time can take around 30 minutes, though
a larger area may take longer.
The treatment may cause mild bruising
or swelling that can last for a few days,
however you can wear make-up straight
away. Treatments can be repeated every
eight to nine months and your cosmetic
treatment specialist will assess your skin
to advise on the best course of treatment
to maintain your desired appearance.

OUR SERVICES EXPLAINED
SKIN REJUVENATION
MEDICAL MICRODERMABRASION
Taking care of your skin is both an
investment in yourself and an effective way
to reduce the cosmetic impact of ageing,
sun damage, neglect or skin that has been
affected by hormonal changes.
This modern procedure helps to treat fine
lines, wrinkles, blocked pores, scarred
tissue, sun damage and blemishes.
HEALTHIER, YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN
Medical microdermabrasion involves
spraying a micro-fine mist of crystals to
exfoliate and resurface your skin, helping
it look and feel smoother. This treatment
is suitable for all skin types, resulting
in healthier, fresher looking skin with
improved elasticity and texture. Facial
treatments usually take 20 to 30 minutes
and afterwards you can apply make-up
straight away. A healthy glow is often
visible after the first session, with longer
lasting effects achieved after a course of
four to six sessions. Your cosmetic expert
will recommend the best way to maintain
your appearance, typically through top-up
treatments every one to two months.
Skin rejuvenation treatments could help
to improve your skin’s elasticity, remove
unsightly skin pigmentation and acne
quickly and easily, without surgery. Bupa
offers a number of skin rejuvenation
treatments. Our cosmetic treatment
specialists will help you choose which
treatments best meet your needs:
oo
medical microdermabrasion
oo
skin peels
oo
laser skin rejuvenation
oo
acne and rosacea reduction
oo
thread vein removal
Our range of services and clinical
equipment have been carefully selected
to ensure the high quality of your
treatment. During your initial consultation,
our cosmetic specialist will advise you on
the treatment or treatments that are
most appropriate for your skin and
desired outcome.
You can find out about the benefits
of each individual treatment on the
following pages.
14
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
COSMETIC TREATMENTS
SKIN PEELS
LASER SKIN REJUVENATION
Hectic daily life and the environment
can cause an excessive build-up of dead
skin cells that give your complexion a
lifeless, dull appearance. Skin peels will
not only give your skin a healthy glow,
they can also successfully treat superficial
discolouration, blemishes, blocked pores,
acne scars, blackheads and fine lines.
Removing the outer layer reveals fresher,
smoother skin underneath.
This rejuvenation treatment is designed
to produce younger and healthier looking
skin – ideal for reducing the visible signs
of ageing, exposure to the sun, blemishes,
blotching and acne scarring.
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
By shedding the outer skin, a firmer layer
is formed, which is both healthier and
less mottled. The treatment will take
around half an hour and with a lighter
peel you should be able to return to your
commitments straight away without
any redness or flaking. However, we
recommend you use the recovery cream
as required after your treatment and wear
sunblock when outdoors. Although you
will normally see improvements after your
first treatment, your cosmetic treatment
specialist will discuss a recommended
initial course and when top-ups should
take place.
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
Laser light energy gradually plumps up your
skin, filling out shallow or superficial scars
and fine lines, leaving it with a healthier
and more youthful look. Treatment takes
around 10 to 20 minutes. The skin may
appear red or slightly swollen immediately
after treatment, but this should disappear
completely within 24 hours.
SKIN TIGHTENING
Skin tightening is a laser treatment which
improves skin texture and tone on the
face and body. A course of treatments is
required to obtain the very best results.
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
The laser heats an area of the inner layer
of the skin called the dermis. As this area
is gently heated, a natural reaction occurs
that encourages the creation of new
collagen. This new collagen improves the
texture, elasticity and tone of the skin.
Not all treatments are available at all Bupa
centres, please check when booking.

OUR SERVICES EXPLAINED
ACNE AND ROSACEA REDUCTION
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Laser treatment has become a popular
and very effective way to clear up acne.
This treatment offers long lasting results
as it targets the root physical cause
of the condition.
Most hair removal techniques are
temporary and require time-consuming
treatments, sometimes even on a daily
basis. Laser treatment is a long lasting
solution for the removal of excess or
unwanted hair. Our cosmetic treatment
specialist will advise you on laser
treatments suitable for your individual skin
type. Laser hair removal is also an effective
treatment for medical conditions which
cause an unwanted increase in hair growth,
such as polycystic ovary syndrome.
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
Light from the laser helps destroy
the bacteria that inflame the skin
and causes acne.
THREAD VEIN REMOVAL
Although harmless, thread veins tend
to occur as the skin ages and becomes
thinner. They usually affect the face, but
thread veins on the body and legs can
also be removed with similar ease.
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
Laser treatments can remove thread veins
quickly and effectively, usually with little
or no scarring. Two or three sessions are
often all that is required to leave your skin
looking smooth and blemish-free.
16
HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS
Laser hair removal is an effective and
proven method of long lasting hair
removal. Advances in technology mean
that treatment can now be offered for
most skin types. Treatment can take
anything from a few minutes up to an
hour depending on the area. As hairs
enter the growth phase at different
stages, removal of all hair can take
from six to eight sessions.
The most commonly treated areas for
women include upper lips, under arms,
bikini and full legs and for men, backs,
chests and abdomen. The number and
frequency of treatments will be discussed
at your first consultation following a review
of your medical history, an assessment of
your skin/hair type and the results of a test
patch. For your safety and comfort, our
cosmetic treatment specialists are highly
trained in the use of laser equipment.
