Searching For Lost Treasure
Whether you are passionate about antiques or just
casually interested, the
Lakes Region is a gold
mine for finding treasures
and collectibles in its
many antique shops.
Two of those are operated
by and benefit Harvest Hills
Animal Shelter. The original
Harry Barker’s Emporium
Antique Group Shop is located on Main Street next to
Bridgton Books and Harry
Barker’s II is located in the
barn at the William Perry
House on Main Hill. Between
them, more than thirty vendors sell antique and vintage
furniture, fishing lures and
flies, jewelry, silver, kitchenware, paintings, books, cottage
items, tins, tools and many
handmade things. Of course,
the merchandise always
changes, so it is worth it to
keep stopping in to see what is
new in both of these shops.
Well-cared for oak and cherry
furniture, especially drop-leaf
tables, are quite popular, says
Lynne Fracassi, manager of the
stores. Besides collectors and
antique lovers seeking treasures, equally popular is the
trend of repurposing furniture
or other items into new uses
such as old frames into mirrors. The possibilities are only
limited by imagination. Birdhouses made from old barn
boards are a big seller. Right
now vintage items from the
mid-50s to the 80s come and
go quickly. Often people find
and fall in love with things
that they had as a child or that
they remember their parents
and grandparents owning.
Fracassi also sees a lot of collectors come through, looking
for “their thing.” For some
people, it is cookie or tobacco
tins with graphics from the
mid-century. Others look
for ice buckets, pots with red
handles and little tables. At
both shops, they also sell some
architectural pieces made with
iron and wood.

The Cultural Scene

western edge of the region,
whether in Brownfield,
Fryeburg, or even Stow, make

Mountain Arts Center for
performances ranging in style

acts have passed through this

been defining characteristics of Harrison’s very own
Deertrees Theatre, all the
way from its grand beginnings to its current status as
“Maine’s Most Enchanting

folk art, visual art, film
screenings, historical artifacts,
as well as a plentitude of space
and natural beauty in which
to meditate on your cultural
experience and your own
creative visions.

Fine art and cultural vibrancy
have both gravitated toward
and endured within the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region for
many decades, due in part to
the ubiquitous serenity of the
area, in part to the many great
minds that have heeded the
inspirational capacity inherent
to such a place, and finally the
inclination of the community
to embrace any number of
creative endeavors.
Dillon hired architect Harrison Wiseman to construct a
woodland theatre equivalent
to the opera houses of New
York, this cultural landmark
has changed hands a number
of times and served many
artistic endeavors. Even so,
it’s just this--administrative
diversity--that has continued
to supplement the innovative
character of this place as well
as reaffirm its essential place
in this community. Change, it
would appear, constitutes the
vitality of Deertrees.
From Dillon, to Emerson
College, to the Town of
Harrison, and finally to the
non-profit Deertrees Founda-

tion, the theatre has fallen
to the stewardship of over a
dozen different individuals,
always rising above its past
accomplishments and, in
spite of any setbacks, striving
to create a new identity that
thrives in the present. And
Deertrees’ current Artistic and
Executive Director Andrew
Harris hopes to make just this
happen: “Over the next few
years,” he says, “I’m hoping
we are able to improve the
grounds so the historic property is a draw for people and
the cafe will be better stocked
so that it may draw people in
its own right to have lunch
and enjoy picnics.” Harris
also adds that “the gallery
15
will have changing exhibits
throughout the summer” and
“there is opportunity for the
public to hire the grounds
and building for reunions and
weddings.” In other words,
Harris intends to expand the
Deertrees experience from
simply a performance venue
to a full-fledged cultural
rendezvous, one where people
can congregate to enjoy excellent art in conjunction with
the outdoors, local cuisine,
and historical craftsmanship.
That said, Harris also wants
his visitors to fall in love with
the flavor of what this place
always was: “a beautiful theater with perfect acoustics.”
As changes make themselves
apparent, so too will the
many fine performances that
take the stage during the
2015 season. This will include
groups such as the Deertrees
New Repertory Company,
the Segabo-Long Lake Music Festival, and the New
Bridgton Chorus Society, as
well as three different plays
with performances peppered
throughout the season. All
family suitable but nonetheless provocative, the upcoming season is one to look
forward to and seek out, for
visitors and locals alike.
Birding in the Lakes Region

the entire expanse of lake

Seeing loons (Gavia immer) on the water or hearing
their haunting calls instills a
memory you’ll hold for a lifetime. Watching the majestic
birds swim and fish thrills
visitors and residents alike.
Loons return to the Greater
Bridgton Lakes Region about
the time the ice goes out in
the spring. Common loon
pairs nest and raise their
young chicks on many of our
clean, clear lakes so the chance
of seeing one is excellent.

While loons may be the
iconic bird of the region,
there are many other species
to watch for and it changes
every season, says Jean Preis,
an avid birder who has written a column on birdwatching
for The Bridgton News for
almost two decades. “Maine
is one of the hottest states to
bird in, especially along the
coast. But this area is a hidden
gem,” says Preis.
One of her favorite destinations for birdwatching is
the Major Gregory Sanborn
Wildlife Management Area,
previously known as Brownfield Bog. “The Brownfield
Bog in May provides worldclass birding as the warblers,
in fresh colorful plumage,
pass through,” she says.
“They’re migrating through
and some come here to breed.
The males, especially those
that are breeding here, sing.”

a heavy rain, Preis says. She’s
seen snow buntings and
sometimes owls along the
windbreaks at the back of
farms. The open water by the
Naples causeway is another
prime birding spot. And the
person with the eagle eye
just might see a bald eagle
roosting on the top of a tall
pine. They’ve frequently been
spotted on the Moose Pond
causeway in Bridgton.

In the Greater Bridgton area,
there are many places to stay
and things to do in every season. During spring, summer,
fall and winter, a weekend in
the Lakes Region will be funfilled whether the sun shines
or the snow flies.
Spring

opportunities and stunning views. Likewise, Moose Pond is just down the road
and features a convenient boat ramp to
launch your kayak, canoe or motorboat;
upon these vast waters, behold a panoramic view of the mountain or explore
its farthest reaches, totaling 11 miles
from end to end.
Summertime in Bridgton and the surrounding towns is nothing short of

Long Lake is the northern
link in the chain of lakes that

Crystal Lake in Harrison is
one of the most popular spots
in the area because of its sandy public beach, convenient
boat launch and welcoming

the picnic area is a ball field

Long Lake is 11 miles long, a

deep depths, the pond allows
for waterskiing, but bigger
boats find its size too small,
thus creating a tranquil setting.

Bear Pond in Waterford is said
to be named after a bear that
was killed in its waters during
the settlement of Waterford.
The pond is the town’s deepest water body at 72 feet. It’s
surface area encompasses 250
acres. The water quality is
rated as slightly above average.
The pond provides a diversity
of sports fishing for every kind
of angler throughout the year.
It is a popular fishing spot
year round. From the west
shore take in magnificent
views of Bear Mountain.

Lovewell Pond is located in Fryeburg. The pond is subject
to flooding when the Saco
River floods. During these
floods the outlet actually reverses direction and flows back
into the pond.

(1792-1884) was a noted artist, musician, inventor, poet, teacher and the
founder of Scientific American in 1845.
He made enduring contributions to
the culture of Maine, New England,
and the United States through his
unique Yankee Ingenuity, as evidenced
in his miniature portraits, famous
wall murals, writings, and inventions.
Beyond this, however, Rufus Porter
shared what he did and learned with
others so they could benefit from his
experiences, a quality the Rufus Porter
Museum continues today through its
exhibits and programs about him and

Rufus Porter: The Man Painted
Like many Mainers today,
Porter (1792-1884) had
multiple talents and multiple
jobs. Although he died before
the term “Renaissance man”
came into use, it describes
Rufus Porter perfectly.
He is perhaps best known for
the wall murals he painted
in homes up and down the
East Coast. The murals depict
the farmland around Bridgton and seaport scenes from
Portland.
Porter had many other
talents, says Samantha Scarf,
Associate Director of the museum. “He founded and wrote
Scientific American magazine.
He tried to develop an airship
that would take people from
the East Coast to California
in three days. He also wrote
a book called Curious Arts,
taught dance, played the fiddle, served in the military in
the War of 1812 and painted
miniature portraits.” One of the amazing inventions Porter designed, Scarf
says, is a revolving rifle. Porter
designed the gun prior to
Samuel Colt’s patent. Colt
bought Porter’s design in
GPS$PMUUIFOQBUented it and the rest is history. Rufus Porter Museum mural
The Rufus Porter Museum in
Bridgton displays the largest
collection of the 19th-century
artist’s works in the world.
The museum, now in its tenth
year, celebrates these masterpieces in American folk art
and also the many other enterprises the artist dabbled in.
Visitors to the museum may
view miniature portraits,
copies of Scientific American
and artworks from other
prominent Bridgton folk
artists, including Jonathan
Poor, Porter’s nephew and
apprentice.
Each year, the Rufus Porter
Museum holds a special exhibit, in addition to the regular collection. In 2015, the
museum will feature exhibits
centered around a common
theme: Yankee Ingenuity.
The museum will hold events
through the season that will
reflect the theme as well. Also,
the Rufus Porter Museum is
working in partnership with
11 other Maine museums
(including the Bridgton Historical Society) to create the
Yankee Ingenuity Trail for the
2015 season.
For its first ten years, the Rufus Porter collection has been

the 1842 Webb House at 121
