This consumer friendly technology uses off-premise electronics to enhance operational efficiency, marketing flexibility, and signal security. The Subscriber Module Interdiction (SMI) architecture is ideal for low penetration, low density applications. Features • Passes analog or digital signals up to 750 MHz • Reverse path of 5-40 MHz supports telephony and other interactive services • Provides complete, addressable control of each subscriber port, including forward and reverse connect/disconnect capability and service level changes • Independently jams channels from 120-550 MHz, which eliminates the need for headend scramblers to secure premium and pay-per-view (PPV) services • Delivers a secured, broadband signal to the home, which eliminates the need for set-top terminals for cable-ready televisions • Jamming architecture maximizes signal security and improves picture quality • Automatic gain control (AGC) maintains constant subscriber output levels despite changes in feeder input levels • Allows pocket deployment in high density, high churn areas • Four- and eight-port configurations replace the tap in the distribution system • Flexible installation in a wall-mounted security enclosure, pedestal, or on the strand • Passes power to the unused feeder port and the subscriber port for customer premise equipment • 37-90 V AC cable powering optimizes system compatibility Multi-Dwelling Complete: Headend, Transmission, Distribution Interdiction & Test Specifications SMI Series INTERDICTION UNIT Through to Actual Feeder Billing Computer Combining Network CATV Channels 108.2 MHz Addressable Transmitter System Manager TV TV VCR Four-Port or Eight-Port SMI Addressable Interdiction Units serve either four (illustrated) or eight dwellings via individual drops. BLONDER TONGUE LABORATORIES,INC. Description Reduced Costs and Increased Revenues Interdiction products combine the functionality of a tap with the addressability of a set-top terminal. By placing the subscriber electronics outside the home, the cable operator still maintains complete, addressable control of the tap from the headend, but gains operational efficiency, marketing flexibility, and increased signal security. Since subscriber connects, disconnects, and service level changes are controlled remotely, the cable operator experiences fewer truck rolls. Also, with the elimination of set-top terminals for cable-ready televisions, the problem of set-top theft is solved. Both benefits greatly reduce maintenance and product replacement costs. The SMI interdiction system is controlled from the headend using Scientific-Atlanta’s System Manager 10/20 computer, which interfaces to the cable operator’s central billing computer. Changes from the headend are quickly communicated to the interdiction devices using an out-of-band addressable transmitter. With the System Manager controller, the interdiction system supports all conventional PPV modes, such as automatic number identification (ANI) and automated response unit (ARU). In addition to enhancing operational efficiency, interdiction technology increases marketing flexibility and revenues. By removing the set-top barrier, special promotions can be offered without any additional service calls or in-home electronics to subscribers and non-subscribers. This flexibility allows for easy free trials, which can result in increased sales of cable services due to lifts in basic, premium, and PPV penetration. Compatibility with Other Formats and Services Ultimate in Signal Security and Picture Quality The interdiction system does not require the use of headend scramblers to protect services. Instead, all channels are transmitted in the clear and unauthorized services from 120-550 MHz are jammed prior to entering the home. Due to the fact that jamming is based on frequencies and not channels, this approach ensures compatibility with various video transmission formats. Additionally, analog and digital services, such as video, data, and telephony, can pass transparently through the interdiction unit in both the forward and reverse path. Instead of scrambling, the interdiction device jams an unauthorized channel by inserting an interfering carrier above the video signal. This jamming carrier obliterates the picture and in many cases masks the audio. If needed, the level of jamming can be varied to increase the amount of protection for premium, PPV, and adult programming services. The characteristics of the jamming signals and their placement within the channel band prevent any compromise in signal security. Due to the fact that authorized channels are sent in the clear, there are no scrambling-related picture artifacts. As a result, picture quality is improved. Specifications SMI Series Whole House Service The interdiction device provides a secured, broadband signal to the entire home allowing direct connection to any cable-ready television. Broadband delivery of cable services minimizes the complexity of installation and setup, eliminates the need for additional equipment in the home, and allows subscribers to retain the full use of their in-home electronics such as picture-in-picture and VCRs. Pocket Deployment The interdiction device is available in a four- or eight-port configuration which replaces the tap in the distribution system. Consequently, it is an ideal product to serve pockets within any network. Operators can enjoy the full benefits of interdiction through partial deployment in high-density, high-churn areas such as hospitals, university campuses, resorts, and apartment complexes. The housing top and bottom protect the interdiction electronics in a lockable, tamper-proof, environmentally protected, RF shielded enclosure. 2A, 2B and 2C - Feeder Cable Ports The housing can be mounted on the wall, the aerial strand, or in a ground pedestal. Cable ports A and B provide a trough path for strand-mounted applications. Cable ports B and C provide a trough path for pedestal-or-wall mounted applications. 3 - Seizure Board The seizure board taps RF and power from the feeder cable. A 3 dB plug-in attenuator pad will be available shortly to support reverse path balancing. This pad can be removed and replaced with a pad of a different value depending on design needs. Previous boards include a fixed, non-changeable 3 dB pad. The data receiver accepts commands from the System Manager computer. Commands are transmitted on a dedicated, out-of-band carrier. 5 - Equalizer The equalizer controls the tilt of the subscriber output signal. It does not affect the feeder cable or reverse path signal. 6 - Motherboard The motherboard provides the AGC and interface for the subscriber modules and data receiver. It also contains a microprocessor that stores the subscriber port addresses and service levels in nonvolatile memory. This allows a subscriber module to be moved from one slot or housing to another without any database change. 7 - Power Supply The power supply transforms network AC voltage and provides DC voltage for the housing electronics. Specific models also pass power to each port. 9 - Subscriber Modules The subscriber modules are plug-in electronics that are dedicated on a per-subscriber basis. The modules contain the jamming electronics and the forward and reverse connect/disconnect circuitry. Additionally, each module has a power passing jumper slot. When installed in a power passing housing with an optional jumper, the subscriber module passes power to the home. (Note: software control of the reverse path switch by System Manager 10/20 will be implemented in a future software release.) 10 - Combiner Board The combiner board combines the reverse path of each subscriber module into a single reverse path output.
