flowers. Spring has officially sprung, which means
motorcycle season has begun (no I didn’t mean for
that to rhyme). The only
bad thing about this time
of year is that we will see
a lot more wet weather. It’s
inevitable that you will get
caught in the rain, whether
you’re out on the weekend
riding for a couple of hours,
or just running a quick errand on your bike. The local
weatherman is becoming
harder to trust nowadays,
so you never really know
when a rain cloud will pop
up over your head and start
pouring down on you.
Some people love riding in
the rain. Personally, I don’t
like it. I’m not scared to do
so, I just prefer not to so I
don’t bother. You should
still develop wet riding skills
no matter if you enjoy venturing out in the rain or not,
because like I said before,
you never know when you
might get caught in some
bad weather. You’re not
going to do anything different than you would riding
on a dry road. As long as
you stay aware, relaxed
and confident, you should
be fine.
How to ride your
motorcycle in the rain
Cover Up & Stay Visible
First things first, you want
to keep yourself dry, which
can be hard when riding
in the rain. Even the most
expensive rain suits will be
put to the test in a heavy
rain storm. You should still
invest in some type of protection if you like to go on
long motorcycle trips, because no one likes to get
wet. Take advantage of a
full-face helmet as well,
because it will keep the
rain drops from smacking
against your face while
cruising. Visibility is also
key when riding in the rain.
We already went over how
to make your motorcycle
more visible, but your rain
suit should have the same
effect. If you can find a reflective rain suit, all the better. Bright colours work well
too as opposed to black or
neutral colours. You want
to be seen at all costs, as
the decreased visibility in
the rain is one of the main
reasons for accidents.
Stay Calm
No matter if the roads are
wet or dry, you need to stay
calm on your motorcycle,
and not be tense or stiff.

riding position, rest your
hands on the bars like you
normally would, and make
sure your elbows, shoulders and neck are free to
move around. Keeping
yourself loose, is also important in dry conditions,
but even more important in
wet conditions. You don’t
need to ride any slower in
the rain, but you won’t be
able to lean suddenly. Just
make sure to keep your
eyes peeled for painted
lines, manhole covers,
train-tracks, puddles and
any other obstacles that
may cause you to break
traction. Take it easy on
and off the throttle and
brakes, but balance your
grip. When you’re riding in
the rain, aim to complete
your turns before you accelerate. The more you ride
in wet conditions, the more
your confidence will grow.
Braking
Your brakes aren’t as responsive on the wet roads,
so its extremely important
to stop at a safe distance
when it’s raining. Also take
your speed into consideration. You want to be able
to slow down at a dependable time when the roads
are slick. Ride at a speed
that your brakes can handle and always over-estimate the time it will take
you to stop. An important
tip is never apply only the
front brakes because it will
cause your front wheel to
slip.If your rear wheel slips,
you can control it, but once
your front wheel starts
skidding, you’re in trouble.
If you can apply a braking
ratio of 60% rear brake and
40% front brake, you will be
fine. Make sure to squeeze
and not grab your brakes,
as sudden shocks of force
can break traction.

to stay safe while riding
your motorcycle in the
rain, is to experience it first
hand. The more practice
you get, the safer you will
be. Next time it starts to
drizzle, take your bike out
for a quick spin and you will
become a pro wet weather
rider in no time.

Is this the demise
of the honeybee?
Bees flitting from one newly
sprouted flower to another
as they collect pollen is one
of the more common sights
of the spring. Honeybees
are content to buzz between
plants for hours. But in recent
years the honeybee population has declined considerably, and scientists and environmentalists continue to
study and debate why bees
seem to be dying out.
Although bees are best
known for their honey production, their symbiotic relationship with nature goes
much further. Honeybees are
instrumental in transferring
pollen from plant to plant,
which helps to foster new life
for many agricultural species.
In addition to wild flowers and
other plants, bees pollinate
many of the crops that end
up as food on dinner tables
across the globe. Bees help
pollinate more than 90 commercially grown field crops,
citrus and other fruit crops,
vegetables and nut crops.
Without these insects, crop
yields would decrease dramatically, and some foods
may cease to exist. Without
bees, food production would
diminish and the prices of
produce would skyrocket.
Commercial
beekeepers
in the United States have
reported deaths of tens of
thousands of honeybee colonies. Ninety percent of wild
bee populations in the United
States have disappeared,
according to Target Health,
Inc. In the Netherlands and
the United Kingdom, bee
species have declined considerably, and some have
even become extinct.
Since 2006, millions of honeybees have died off due to
a phenomenon called Colony
Collapse Disorder, or CCD.
CCD refers to the absence
of adult honeybees in a colony with few or no adults remaining. Worker bees simply
disappear, leaving behind
the queen and vulnerable
developing young. Bees are
not usually known to leave
the hive unguarded. While
similar disappearances have
been documented in the last
100 years, those incidences
have grown considerably in
recent years.
Officials in the United States
Department of Agriculture
and the Environmental Protection Agency have not
been able to determine why
the honeybee population has
undergone such a steep decline, though some believe
that a complex combination
of factors, including parasites, lack of genetic diversity, poor nutrition, and pesticides, could be responsible.
Examination of dead bees
has found residues of more
than 100 chemicals, insecticides and pesticides, including some used to control
parasites, in bee hives.
Other factors that come into
play involve climate changes
that affect wildflower production. Without wildflowers, bees have no sources
of food. Rainy, wet or overly
dry weather can wreak havoc
on the landscape, resulting
in fewer flowers and, as a
result, a smaller bee population.
Scientists are still studying
the situation and working
toward a solution to restore
the honeybee population.
Individuals can do their part
by keeping plenty of blooming flowers in their yards
and never killing honeybees
found on their property. Disturbing an established hive
can result in the bees abandoning their work, leading to
even greater losses.

How to make your
renovation a
successful, positive
experience!

In the United States, renovation spending has more
than doubled since the late
1990s, reaching nearly $65
billion last year alone. Oftentimes the investment
a homeowner makes is
substantial, both financially and emotionally. The
stakes are high. That’s why
it’s imperative that the job
is done well from start to
finish. There are a number
of steps a homeowner can
take to ensure a positive
experience and a successful outcome, including:
1. Know your goal. Ask
the question, “What is this
renovation designed to
accomplish? More functionality? Storage? Living
space?” If a homeowner
doesn’t know where they’re
going with the renovation,
chances are they’ll never
get there.
2. Do your research. In
most things, knowledge is
power, and knowing what
to expect, in advance,
can keep expectations in
check. Investigate options,
budgets and timelines, and
arrange financing in advance.
3. Hire professionals. Be
sure that they are happy to
work with you to meet your
budget and achieve your
vision. Communicate clearly and often to ensure understanding on both sides.
4. Opt for a general contractor and trades that are
experienced, licensed and
insured. Don’t hesitate to
check credentials and references. Get recommendations from family, friends
and colleagues who have
had work done and were
satisfied with the results.
5. Start with quality building
materials. When it comes
to home renovation and
construction, the adage,
“it’s what’s on the inside
that counts” seems apt.

This includes quality electrical, plumbing, HVAC,

underestimate the importance of insulation - especially in a basement renovation. Not all insulation is
created equal. Opt for insulation that is fire-resistant,
sound absorbent and resistant to mold, mildew, bacterial growth, and rot. In my
renovations, I like to use

moisture issues that can
pose health risks and lead

7. Develop a good plan.

to any organizing project is
to take everything out of the
shed and determine just what
needs to go back in. Items
that do not belong in the shed
should be moved to their
rightful locations or tossed in
the trash if they’re no longer
needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations and a
third for garbage. Take inventory of what you have so you
know whether you’re missing

empty, you can assess just

Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can
free up areas on the floor for

Shelving, racks, pegboards
and any other materials that
enable you to hang or store
items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby
home improvement retailer
to find items that can simplify
your storage. You also may
be able to put scrap wood to
use to make your own storage shelves or a work bench.
Extra kitchen cabinets can be
installed in the shed to organize additional items.
In order to remember where
items go, label or sort them
accordingly. Some people
like to take organization a
step further by tracing the
outline of tools hung on the
wall so they can be placed
back in the same spot after
use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools
are missing and which ones
need to be purchased.
Don’t forget to utilize shed
doors as additional storage
space. Hang frequently used
tools, such as rakes and
shovels, on the inside of the
doors so they will always be
easily accessible.
You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for
other areas of the home.
For example, magnetic knife
holders can be mounted to a
shed wall to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders
also can be used to keep
many small metal tools tidy.
Metal funnels can hold twine
and string. Thread through
the narrow end of the funnel
for a handy dispenser.
Keep dangerous substances
off the floor and out of reach.
Gasoline, chemical fertilizers
and other potentially dangerous substances should be
stored high up to keep pets
and children safe.
Make sure the shed floor is
sturdy and level. This makes
it easier to neatly store larger
items. Roll in the lawnmower,
wheelbarrow and any other
cumbersome items. Now that
more things are mounted vertically, you should find that
you have more area to move
around.
Taking the time to clean and
organize a shed can help
make anyone more productive.

Graduation season, an
oft-emotional time of great
celebration and reflection,
is on the horizon. Though
soon-to-be graduates are
about to have one set of
challenges firmly behind
them, other important life
decisions and experiences
are looming in the not-toodistant future.
Although there’s no magic
set of rules for post-graduation, the following advice
can help recent gradates
transition from the classroom to the ceremony and
then life after school.
· Attend the graduation
ceremony. Graduating students may debate whether
or not to attend their graduation ceremonies. Such
ceremonies tend to be
lengthy, and outdoor affairs
can be hot and uncomfortable. However, graduation
is a milestone moment
that you won’t get to enjoy
again. Attending graduation allows you one last
academic experience, and
even if that seems not too
meaningful right now, you
might regret skipping the
ceremony down the road.
· Enjoy graduation but
buckle down once the dust
settles. According to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and
Employers, the job market
for new graduates is improving marginally. But the
Institute for College Access
and Success notes that
many college graduates
will be saddled with around
$25,000 in debt upon earning their degrees. Many
student loans have a sixmonth repayment grace
period after graduation, so
new grads who don’t already have a job lined up
may want to use some of
that grace period to travel,
visit distant relatives or relax and recharge before
their first payment comes
due. Use the time wisely,
but be prepared to buckle
down when the time comes
to start repaying loans.
· Join an alumni association. Regardless of the size
of your school, chances
are strong they have a local alumni association and
several chapters across
the country. Take advantage of these organizations to connect with fellow
alumni, who can be invaluable sources of information
and provide connections
that may help you find a job
in your field.
· Read and learn new skills.
If you have yet to land that
first job, use some of your
down time to reacquaint
yourself with reading for
pleasure instead of reading
as part of an assignment.
You also can use extra time
to explore new skills, such
as learning certain software or applications that
may help you stand out in a
competitive job market.
· Before you decide what
you want to do, you may
have to figure out what you
don’t like. Another way to
use free time is to volunteer or apply for internships
in fields you may want to

position of Supervisor of Special Education to plan, implement, coordinate
and supervise the delivery of educational services to students with special
needs and gifted in order to ensure that the needs of each child are met
and services are being implemented. Requirements: a Master’s degree
in Special Education or related field and a PA Special Education
Supervisory certificate.
Interested parties should have knowledge of special education laws,
disabilities, programmatic needs of students, and current trends in the
techniques in the field. Must possess excellent interpersonal,
organizational, communications, and conflict mediation skills and be able
to work in an environment with frequent interruptions, make judgments
and work under a high level of stress.
This is a 12-month Act 93 Administrative position with a minimum
salary of $72,000 and full benefits.

Fireflies are often seen
lighting up the night sky
on warm evenings. They
are
particularly
abundant during the summer
months. One reason that
fireflies glow is to attract
mates. Males will flash,
and females will respond
to mates they find interesting. Fireflies also may glow
to avoid predators. The luciferase enzyme in firefly
cells causes a chemical reaction that stimulates light,
a phenomenon called bioluminescence. Fireflies are
filled with lucibufagins, a
poor-tasting chemical that
turns off predators from
attacking the blinking bug.
Some fireflies cannot light
up at all and use pheromones to attract mates.
Fireflies can be fun to catch
and release and also beneficial to have around. In the
larval stage, fireflies will eat
destructive insects. Adult
fireflies may feed on nectar and could help to pollinate plants. Despite their
name, fireflies aren’t really
flies. They actually are a
type of beetle. Fireflies are
difficult to spot during the
day because they’re oftenresting on leaves or plants.
