1 MARQUETTE COUNTY QUILTERS ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 411 Marquette, MI 49855 www.marquettequilters.com April, 2014 April 2, 2014 Peter White Public Library Community Room 6:30 PM Programming Note Ragene Henry said, “Calling all creative quilters! Calling all ladies who like hats! Calling all mad hatters! It’s time for our Hat Challenge Reveal!” There are no rules – but there are hundreds of possibilities. Here are a few that we brainstormed within about 5 minutes at the February meeting: hats with flowers, fruits (think Carmen Miranda), feathers, birds (with or without feathers), sports hats, vacation hats (think palm trees or ski hills), holiday hats (a very special witches hat or Easter Bunny Bonnet), ethnic hats, etc, etc, etc. You can make a hat and decorate it, or you can use an existing hat and decorate it. We will have a parade of hats, a bunch of ooohs and aaaahs, and a lot of laughter. I’ll be wearing a hat – please participate with me. Preparations for our big, biennial Quilt Show are ongoing. The Autumn Comforts Committee has been formed under the guidance of Co-chairs Judy Parlato and Tracey Cairati. Show dates are November 8 & 9, at NMU. Please contact Judy or Tracey to see how you can get involved in this well organized effort, as many different skills and interests are needed to accomplish a wonderful show. Our efforts are a patchwork quilt making a harmonious whole! 2 Our National Quilt Day event on Saturday March 15 was a great success, despite the weather. Thank you to all who brought items for display and to those who came and helped with setting up. Thanks, Esther, for bringing in your quilts to share during the bed turning. Thanks to Alice, Marcy, Kathy and Susan for all of your hard work preparing for this fun day. Thanks to ALL of you! We had 80 or so guests come in to check us out and work on projects. We had three new members sign up! The raffle quilt brought in around $70. It was great to have it there on display. It is a beauty! This was a great way to kick off our raffle ticket sales. I just wanted to say thanks, Karen Sanford, Publicity Chair And thanks to the wonderful collaboration with the Marquette Arts and Culture Center! Welcome new MCQA Members! Mike and Pat Muth, Laura Reilly Save the Date: National Quilting Day will be March 21, 2015. Have you enjoyed the ongoing fiber arts displays at the Sweetwater Café recently? The Explorers Friendship group and then the Gwinn Quilters challenge quilts have been a visual treat! And soon, the Yarnwinders weavers’ guild will hang a show of recent works. Some folks love breakfast on Tuesdays with the special hazelnut pancakes. But I can enjoy a meal, or a dessert and coffee, anytime! I am grateful for their hosting our local fiber artists’ works, as well as preparing locally sourced food in this rich and cozy atmosphere. And, if you would like to make a quilt worthy of hanging in a public viewing space, have we got a workshop for you! Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, "See this, it is new "? Already it has existed for ages which were before us.… Is it a sign that I have been alive a long, long time? Even though we are experiencing a dizzying expansion of technology and innovation our forebears couldn't have imagined, I keep finding examples in modern life that remind me of the timelessness within the new. Example: Modern quilting design. The Modern Quilt Guild says characteristics of modern quilting include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. Now, take a look at Phoebe Pettit's Pieced Quilt in the Quilt Collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History: "Phoebe Pettit’s quilt has an elaborate quilting pattern imposed over a pieced pattern, an unusual technique at this period. Blue threads in the selvedges of the dotted pink fabric indicate that it was manufactured in England between 1774 and 1811. Diagonal quilting provides the background for the complex floral stuffed-work pattern in the center. The irregular scalloped border that cuts into the pieced pattern is a mystery." The design parallels between Phoebe's early 19th century quilt and many contemporary moderns are impressive. And once you are at the Smithsonian’s fabulous American History website listed below, you can enjoy a showing of more than 200 quilts with documentation and analytics, many with detailed views. These quilts are not now on display in the museum. So, take a look online. Better than a trip to D.C.! americanhistory.si.edu At the home page, go to collections and search Quilts for the full tour of 220+ items or enter Phoebe Pettit in the search to go straight to her unusual quilt. ← Phoebe Pettit’s Pieced Quilt ↓ 93 in x 73 in, circa 1775-1825 Detail 6 MCQA Meeting Minutes February 12, 2014 Mary Poirier opened meeting at 6:40pm at PWPL. Bethea said: “Watching Gunsmoke and counting how many quilts I see. All are beautiful. Just wish they would leave them on long enough to really see them. Even the wallpaper and rugs look like quilts. Do I have quilting on the brain?” Of course you do, Garnie. So do we! It’s a great question, and a challenge: What movies or television programs have quilts in a scene? I’m thinking Elaine in Seinfeld had a quilt behind her bed on the wall. In 50 First Dates, you can’t miss the Hawaiian quilt. More movie quilts that come to mind are You’ve Got Mail, when Meg Ryan is sick and Tom Hanks drops by. (One of my favorites. The movie, that is!) Several quilts have been spotted in Nanny McPhee; of course, children in bed in almost any Disney movie are comforted by a quilt! How about Holiday Inn, and The Christmas Shoes? And Gone With the Wind. (When was the last time you watched those classics?) This weekend: Pepper Cory mentioned “Quilts Seen in Movies” in her Quilt Flap blog. She admired National Velvet’s historically correct quilt, but took special notice of the quilts in Coal Miner’s Daughter and the TV movie, Sarah, Plain and Tall. They were wrong for their time! This spawns a secondary list: Out of Sync Movie Quilts (Quilt styles and fabrics that came later than the movie!) May in our area: What quilt-sightings can you add? Comment and we’ll keep a running list! (Updated 11/18/2013….thanks for all the great responses, here and on the American Quilter’s Society Facebook page! We have 117 and climbing! Keep ’em coming, anytime you see one!)
