Dear Martineau Society Member,
December, 2014
Annual Conference 23 – 26 July 2015 at The George Hotel, Norwich
Norwich was, of course, the home of the Martineaus. Harriet was born in the same bed in
Gurney Court, Magdalen Street, as her cousin, Elizabeth Fry, the prison reformer, twenty-five
years earlier. James was born in the family’s new house across Magdalen Street. Visits to
Gurney Court and Martineau House and other local sites Harriet and James knew well are part
of the Society’s annual conference in 2015. Do come to Norwich, “the fine City”, and enjoy the
Conference.
The Conference programme will consist of papers, the ‘trail’ in Norwich and social events. It is
almost certain the 2015 Conference will include a special event – a conference within a
conference – to be held by the Society in Norwich’s City Centre and to which the Society
Conference delegates will have free entry. This “special” public Conference on Saturday, 25
July, 2015, will raise wider interest in the Martineau family and add to interest being raised by
the annual Harriet Martineau Lectures in Norwich so well attended in the past two years. More
details of the special event will come to members later and the provisional programme will be
issued at the end of March. Please do offer a paper or presentation and/or a contribution
to our social evening. The Society has no Conference without you!
I enclose a conference registration form which should be sent to the Society’s Secretary,
Sharon Connor (details below) and also details of how to book the hotel for the Conference,
and how to get to The George Hotel in Norwich. When booking for the Conference, please
contact The George Hotel directly using only the indicated telephone number or email address
to secure the special rates for the “Martineau Society Conference”.
Please note that the costs you will be asked to promise to pay when booking with your credit
card as a Conference delegate at The George Hotel are the complete costs of the Conference.
There is no separate Registration Fee. You are strongly advised to have insurance against
illness or other reason for cancellation.
Please see final page for details of bursaries available.
As mentioned above, please also complete the Registration Form below and send by post to:
