Challenges and Future Trends for Caribbean Ports

Challenges and Future Trends
for Caribbean Ports
Regional 2-day Conference and Workshop
1-2 May
2015
“When you’re on one of the Caribbean islands, sometimes it’s hard to
picture how they fit in with the rest, but when you see them all joined
together like a necklace from space; you see the natural geographic
connectedness of them all.” - Chris Hadfield
It is estimated that 90% of the
goods circulating worldwide
are transported by sea, placing
maritime trade at the heart of
the issues related to economic
growth.
The Caribbean, though small
in population and economic
activities, except for tourism
( The Caribbean is the most
tourism intensive region in the
World), constitutes a major
crossroads for international
maritime trade.
With its proximity to the
Panama Canal, and also as
a major focal point for north/
south Atlantic trades and trades
with the east and northern
coasts of South America,
Caribbean maritime transport
and related logistics services
have become vitally important
for the economic performance
of the region.
Caribbean ports contain a
variety of facilities such as
bulk cargo facilities, container
facilities and facilities that
handle petroleum products
and liquefied natural gas.
Additionally, several Caribbean
ports are among the top cruise
ship destinations in the world.
This May, the Caribbean ports
and shipping industry will
gather in Aruba to discuss the
many challenges facing port
operators and ship charterers
today. This will provide an
excellent opportunity for
updates on regional policy and
initiatives from expert speakers
and industry leaders.
Attend to explore how shifts in
the market supply chains are
occurring both in the Caribbean
region and globally, review the
global shipping forecasts and
the impacts of these for the
Caribbean region, examine the
secure movement of people
and goods in Caribbean ports
and look at port development,
including examining the
planning framework and
investing in ports for the future.
Hosted by the Government
of Aruba, STC BV Rotterdam
in conjunction with the
Directorate of Shipping Aruba,
regional ports authorities and
ship charters will meet at the
Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino
& Spa on 1 & 2 May 2015.
